Sunday Snippet: On Ice

Whew. Very long week of scorching temperatures and tinder-dry conditions. We need some rain in a big way. Also, the end of my street is closed, which is kind of inconvenient but not terrible. It's the height of construction season and it shows with multiple road projects going on.

Super busy week with work projects and shifting my schedule around a little. I'm very happy to have a full calendar even when it overwhelms me a little.

School starts this week and I'm excited for my husband, who really enjoys interacting with the students, teachers, and staff. Looking forward to hearing how his first week goes with the kids coming back.

Had a decent viewing week. Made it most of the way through my shows, including one of my back-burner ones. It also looks like a few of my faves are getting ready to return to my streamers.

Started season two of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and enjoyed all the newcomers. Jack's former wife and his father-in-law along with Dottie's sister. Phryne doing a fan dance also ended up being fun.

Enjoyed the mystery on Madame Blanc Mysteries. Kind of fun having John back but I'm hoping it's not going to be a lot of him. Also wondering if there are some cracks in Jean and Dom's relationship. I'll be a little sad if there are.

Finished up season thirteen of Death in Paradise. I'm oddly sad to say goodbye to Neville. But I'm really thrilled he's leaving with Florence. A fitting end for the character.

Watched another episode of Poirot and quite enjoyed the mystery. Having the ongoing Monopoly game going throughout the episode was fun.

Elementary ended up being very interesting. Having Sherlock working with Moreland ended up being entertaining and I'm very interested and wary of why Moreland is really in New York. That ending hinted that all may not be what it seems, which isn't that surprising. I hope it gives Joan the chance to kick ass on Sherlock's behalf.

Caught another episode of Batman Beyond and loved how Terry and Max teamed up to handle Curare. This was a great episode.

Lower Decks once again charmed and annoyed me. That's the running theme for this show. That said, I enjoy it enough to definitely keep watching.

Got most of an episode of Reacher viewed. It's the penultimate ep so I'm paying close attention to the details. Because … details matter. Just saying.

Peak Practice is hopefully back on target for this week. I started a new episode but didn't get all the way through.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from On Ice, a novella that puts a couple on opposing sides of a conflict and one pushes the other a little too far.

Here's the miniblurb:

A battle is brewing between opposing magical factions and Paley Knoff and Birk Southampton are charged with readying their troops. Paley thinks Birk is taking the threat too seriously and when he ignores her in favor of adding more training, she pushes him a little too far, leaving him no choice but to put her on ice until she remembers who's in charge.

And a preview snippet…

Birk turned the water on to let it warm up and watched Paley shed her clothes.
This part of being partners in work and life they did well. The rest? Yeah, the rest needed some major work. The woman drove him around the bend with her contradictory and contrary methodology. And, lately, they'd had a hard time coming to terms about anything work related, which started to spill over their personal life.
But a little stress relief … might help. His gaze wandered from her painted toenails up to her toned thighs then over the flare of her hips. Maybe they should just stay naked all the time. His lips quirked and he glanced up to meet her gaze.
She arched a brow. "Better keep up. You're a bit overdressed." She reached forward and popped the button of his dungarees.
Birk took her hint and yanked his shirt off then dropped his pants. "All caught up." Nudging her toward the shower, he ducked in behind her.
Paley let the water sluice over her head and down her body. She moved around behind Birk and gave him room to step under the spray. He bent his head, the water raining down and over his back. Paley's hands gripped his shoulders, then smoothed down his spine and around either side of his waist. Her fingers found his hard length and curled around it.
Tension drained from his body. Between the hot water raining down over him and Paley's nimble handiwork, he could almost forget the huge task in front of them. And for the rest of the night, he would.
Angling to one side of the stall, he turned toward Paley and drew her closer. His mouth met hers and his hands cupped her ass. She moaned low in her throat, showing her patience wearing thin. Bracing his shoulders against the wall, he slid down a little then urged her to straddle his thighs.
Paley didn't break the kiss when she draped her legs over his and slid over his cock in one smooth glide downward. Her warm heat surrounded him, and he relaxed, shedding another layer of stress and turmoil. Paley's lips ghosted along his jawline, a hot breath fanning against his ear, and her hips rocked steadily back and forth.
Digging her fingers into his biceps, she increased the pace and arched her back, bringing her breasts into contact with his chest. Birk skimmed his hands along her sides then brushed his thumbs over her hardened nipples. Paley sucked in a breath before snaring his mouth with hers again.
The stall filled with steam and the sound of low moans and panting bursts of air coming from both of them. Birk flexed his thighs, driving upward to meet the roll of her hips. The added friction sent Paley over the edge, and she shuddered through an orgasm. Birk followed quickly behind, finding his release buried deep inside her.
Paley slid gently from his lap and ducked under the spray. Birk eased in behind her and they rinsed off together. She cut the water, cracked the door open, and reached for a towel. Birk took the fluffy material and wrapped it around her then grabbed one for himself. She turned toward him and rested her head on his shoulder.
Pressing a kiss to the top of her head, he traced a water droplet from her temple to her chin. "We definitely needed that." Easing away from her, he nodded toward the bedroom. "Round two in five?"
Paley's lips quirked. "I'm down with that."

Ahhhh, the calm before the storm. Birk and Paley will be butting heads in the very near future.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Numb

Whew. Ended up being a long week between work, home, and other projects. The biggest and best one is helping my daughter edit her final paper for her master's degree. I'm so proud of her!

I made a small dent in the great cleanout project. Didn't get a lot accomplished but made a bit of progress, which I'll take.

Finished up two work projects and continued on with two more. I have another two in flux and two new ones coming sometime this week. Excited to stay busy!

Pretty good week for viewing. I got through my full round of shows and finished up one from last week. I'm still working on one of the others.

Started with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and it was one of my favorite episodes. I love a good masquerade or costume party.

Caught another episode of Madame Blanc Mysteries and enjoyed Gloria and Nick working together. Hope to see more of that in future episodes.

Enjoyed an episode of Death in Paradise. The run-up to Neville leaving is turning out to be a lot of fun. And always good to see Dwayne back. Looking forward to the next episode.

Finished up the two-part Poirot and loved how the resolution came together. I like it when the infallible Poirot gets off on the wrong track for a bit.

Watched another episode of Elementary and quite enjoyed the mystery. Also enjoyed Joan handling her detractor and Sherlock acting as the support system afterward.

Enjoyed an episode of Batman Beyond. I remembered this one from my original watch. A lot of fun.

Caught an episode of Lower Decks and, again, ended up being equally charmed and annoyed. I think that's my standard for this show.

Finished up the Reacher episode from last week and wow. Gotta say I didn't see the ending coming, which is always a good thing. Hoping I can get a full episode in this week.

Almost finished an episode of Peak Practice. Things are getting very messy in the relationship departments for everyone, and Sam, whew, what a huge pile he's getting ready to step into.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Numb, a novella where a couple has to face a huge challenge without losing sight of each other.

Here's the miniblurb:

Cyan Fitch and Theron Dibney have a great relationship—hot sex, rock solid friendship, and mutual respect. When a mostly lethal virus tears through their community, the couple works side by side to help as many as possible, but it takes a toll. They can't quite get comfortably numb while they face the devastating losses and neither is willing to bend for fear they'll break.

And a preview snippet…

Cyan Fitch stood with a shoulder braced on the door jamb to her mother's lab. "Hey, Mom. You've been here for three days. You might want to take a break." Not that she would because their fae brethren were dropping like stars in the sky.
Ciara arched her brows then pointed to a book. "Get that, will you. And no, I'm not taking a break. I've got to figure this out." She grabbed two tomes and set them beside the one Cyan retrieved.
Cyan took a seat on the stool at the worktable. "No luck yet, I take it?" Her mom had the distracted look she always got when answers were just out of reach.
Ciara shook her head. "Not yet. I have a thread to pull and might be able to trace the origin of this damn virus."
A mostly lethal strain. One that didn't act like a normal virus that could be treated with spells or concoctions. The ratio of the dead to the survivors had widened each of the past six weeks.
Ciara paused after opening all three books. "I could use your help getting the afflicted to various hostels in a centralized location so they can maybe be treated and cured." Her lips thinned to a flat line. "Or die with dignity." She shook her head and turned to find another resource.
Cyan couldn't say no … not when her mom rarely asked for help. "I can do that. I'll start with Werther's and when that's filled, I'll move on to Shasta House." The two hostels had the most beds, and both owners were amiable and owed Ciara more than a few favors.
Ciara nodded. "Plan on finding at least two more." She bookmarked a section and moved to one of the other books. "Work with Theron. You shouldn't try to go it alone on this."
The suggestion didn't sting like it once might have. Cyan learned a while ago that being a solo act didn't always get things done, and she worked well with Theron Dibney.
Even when they often got caught up in pushing boundaries and crossing lines between work and personal lives.
Cyan lifted her chin. "All right. What do you plan to do?" If she needed Cyan to gather everyone together, Ciara had a reason.
Her mom gave Cyan a grim smile. "Consult the dark arts because nothing else has worked."
Theron entered at that moment. "You'll have a fight on your hands. The council will deal harshly with you if they find out." He nodded to Cyan and sat on the stool next to hers.
No doubt her mom sent for him. Probably before Cyan even agreed to work with him.
Ciara grunted. "They can do whatever they deem necessary … after I figure out how to stop this." She paused for a moment, took a deep breath, and exhaled slowly. "What I'm going to say goes no further." She met and held Theron's gaze then Cyan's.
Both silently agreed to her stipulation.
Ciara lowered her voice. "I'm solidly convinced the council is at the root of everything. I'm just not sure how yet."
Theron jerked his head back. "You think they unleashed the virus?" His tone incredulous, he stiffened.
Ciara gave a quick head shake. "Probably not … but I do think the responsibility will land at their feet." She flipped through several pages and frowned.
Cyan narrowed her eyes. "That means revenge, retaliation, or remonstration." Which had seriously nasty undertones.
Theron lifted one shoulder. "Not like they haven't made enemies … especially in the last decade." His stance relaxed with some relief.
Ciara turned and pulled down two more books. "They've had a chokehold on the population and aren't keen to change the status quo." She sent a hard look over her shoulder. "And resentment is strong out there."
Cyan slid off the stool. "So is stagnation. I can't wrap my head around someone or a group of someones having the power to unleash something on this level." Then again, change often came in the most unexpected ways.
Theron got to his feet. "What's the plan for us?" He shifted his gaze between Cyan and Ciara.
Cyan motioned for him to follow her. "I'll brief you on the way…"

So far, this story is going the way I hoped with a few small surprises. Can't wait to finish it up and see how it ends.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Maybe This Seems Familiar

Even though March is my birth month and the birth month of my mom and one of my best friends, I'm kind of glad to kick it to the curb. It's been a wild ride this month. That said, it's also been intensely productive, so I'm really not complaining.

The weather is still drunk, wildly surging one direction then lurching back only to zing forward again. My sinuses hate me right now. And my throat has that I just swallowed glass with a gravel chaser sound at the moment.

Still buried with work but I'm making great progress on all fronts. I added another new hourly project to the pile and made a big dent in that one yesterday.

Not a bad week for viewing. I got through my usual slate and did a marathon watch to finish out the week.

Ended up watching two episodes of Elementary and both were actually terrific. I'm very interested in seeing how things with Kitty play out in the next few installments.

Caught two episodes of Batman Beyond. Always happy to see the Royal Flush show up and I liked the throwback to Bane.

Also enjoyed two Classic Rugrats episodes. I'm about halfway through the final season and I think I'll pick back up with the new reboot once I'm finished up.

Caught another episode of Death in Paradise and I'm enjoying having Darlene working with the team. She's a great addition. Also glad to see Neville's sister exit. Maybe she'll grow on me, but I didn't enjoy her at all.

Watched the first official episode of season two Beyond Paradise. Really enjoyed the way the mystery unfolded. Also loved the resolution.

I ended up not quite finishing the episode of London Kills but I should have that one completed this week.

That's it for the life update. Tonight's post is from Maybe This Seems Familiar, a novella that pulls a couple together after a big loss.

Here's the miniblurb:

A tragic death sends Inyx Pic, an Adept Major, into a brittle shell of self-doubt. When Philo Batson, her Adept Master, pushes Inyx to get back to teaching, her armor of disillusionment cracks and anger and grief come pouring out, leaving Philo to handle the fallout.

And a preview snippet…

Adept major Inyx Pic cast a recall spell. "No, Marlax. You're skipping steps and your ass is really gonna hurt when you get knocked on it from backlash." She absorbed the random energy from calling in the attempted conjure.
Marlax Tillie snarled. "I'm not a baby mage. I don't need the training wheels, Major Pic." Her eyes flashed with anger. "You're holding me back, and it's not fair." She flounced to her worktable.
Inyx bit back a string of curses. "Fair isn't why we're here. You can't move on to the next class if you don't master the finer points of conjuring." How many times had Inyx listened to lectures about finesse?
And how many times had she wanted to smash her fist into Philo Batson's face because he never shut up about learning the basics forward, backward, and upside down? Probably as many as she'd wanted to strip him naked and make him passionate about something other than conjuring. Too bad she'd never pushed harder to make that happen.
Then again, she had very good reasons for not doing so. Even if he'd made it clear he'd be interested…
"Major Pic? Am I free to go?" Marlax arched her winged brows.
Inyx blinked and shook off the cobwebs. "You can leave after you've listed the ten steps to safely conjure. Then come back tomorrow and we'll start again." She made her way to the stool sitting at the head of the classroom. "The rest of you are dismissed. See you tomorrow." Sinking down, she tried to recalibrate and find her center.
Next time, she'd send the random energy out the window instead of taking it on. She'd spend the rest of the day wired one moment and dragging ass the next. At least she didn't have to teach any more this afternoon.
Marlax slapped her notebook open and huffed out sigh. She scribbled the assigned list down the page, tore it out, and brought it to Inyx. She reviewed the steps and gave a nod.
Marlax rolled her eyes. "It's not that I don't know what they are. It's—"
Inyx finished the thought for her student. "You think they're stupid. I don't need to be an oracle to figure that out." She folded the paper and tucked it into Marlax's shirt pocket. "Come in tomorrow, do what you need to do, and you'll be golden." If Marlax tried to leap ahead again, she'd be wearing the list on her forehead.
Marlax snorted, whirled around, gathered her stuff, and stomped out the door, nearly running Philo over when he entered.
His brows went up. "Do I want to know what that's about?" He propped his hip on the worktable across from her desk.
Inyx sighed. "It's been a day. That one wants to fly before she can walk." And damn if the plebe didn't raise a bunch of red flags.
Philo smirked. "That sounds familiar."

I think I finally have the tone I want for this story. Philo and Inyx have a long history of dancing around each other and it's fun to write them edging closer together.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Man Up

The work project abundance continues. I'm plugging along and chiseling away at the four current projects I have on my plate—two copy edits, a proofread, and a developmental edit are the main events. I also have a set of revisions to review and a read through to start. It's chaotic but also … fun? I love that everything I'm working on right now is so different. Not one of the manuscripts is similar to the other ones.

As usual, totally unhinged weather in Ohio. It's cold. It's hot. It's both in one day. Rain, sun, gloomy clouds, and hey, a chance for more snow. I did get lucky and had a mostly clear night for the recent blood moon eclipse, which was amazing to watch. Being a night owl comes in very hand sometimes.

Had a limited viewing schedule this week, mainly because I needed to focus on the words in the manuscripts. I did get a few things watched. I might have to give binge watching something for background noise a go for the next few weeks.

Finished up Beyond Paradise and thoroughly enjoyed the first season finale. They packed so much into this episode. The case, Humph and Archie fight, more shenanigans from the Chief Super, Esther and Hump bonding, Margo being Margo, Kelby being Kelby, and of course, the crew from Death in Paradise at the end. I can't wait to watch the first holiday episode this week!

Caught an episode of Elementary and quite enjoyed it. Interesting interactions between the consulting trio and the police duo and twisty bits thrown in to keep things rolling.

Enjoyed an episode of Batman Beyond. It's one I definitely remembered and liked during my first watch of this series.

Watched an episode of Classic Rugrats and actually remember this one, which is odd because most of the ninth season has been new-to-me stuff.

Started an episode of London Kills, the opener to the fourth season. I had to stop partway through because I need to pay attention and this isn't the week for me to do that.

Also binged a marathon of Peter Gunn on one of the live PlexTV channels. I've been hitting Plex up for a lot of viewing fare lately and I might end up using it over the next several weeks for background noise. Stay tuned.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Man Up, a novella that brings a couple together when they compete to see who can outdo who.

Here's the miniblurb:

Hattie Hale and Nero Palmer, instructors at the Academy of Light, are supposed to set the example, but can't quite get past their competitive natures. A drunken game of one-ups-manship goes all the way to the sleeping chamber because neither will admit to being outdone.

And a preview snippet…

Hattie wished she could sip her mug of coffee slowly, but she always inhaled the first blast of caffeine of the day. "Right, then. I'm ready for a refill. You can talk now." She reached for the carafe and filled her mug while carefully watching him through her lashes.
She had to give the guy props. He'd kept up with her last night and didn't seem too bad off. In fact, he appeared to be doing just fine. A notch of respect ticked up for him.
Nero's chin lifted. "Ground rules? Let's start there." He propped an ankle on his knee. "We need some surprises because we know each other's strengths and weaknesses in the classroom."
Hattie blinked. "Wow. You've given this some thought, haven't you?" She didn't care how they competed because her main goal had been to … what had been the original point?
Right. She kind of wanted to test the waters and see if anything developed between them. But … she didn't want to be obvious.
Nero arched his brows. "Why wouldn't I? You issued a challenge and, well, it could be fun to compete for something other than test grades." He nodded toward the pot on the ottoman. "Mind if I have more? The coffee really is excellent."
Hattie's lips twitched. "Can I count that as a win?" She scooted the carafe closer to him.
Nero laughed. "Why not? I have to concede it's better than anything I've ever brewed." He refilled his mug and shook his head.
An idea popped into her mind. "Okay. Let's make one of our ground rules competing in nonmagickal areas." She had a couple of super-secret recipes she could pull out and blow his mind with.
Nero pondered for a moment. "Yeah. I'm down with that. Like a mix of magick we don't use in the classroom and regular, everyday stuff." Sipping from the mug, he watched her over the rim of the cup.
Hattie hid a smirk. "All right. I'll cook dinner tonight. You can cook tomorrow. Monday … well, we'll see how it goes. We can use it as a tiebreaker if we need to." Warming up to the plan, she made another suggestion. "For something magickal, I think we should try something with runes. Set a ward and see if the other can break it." She loved puzzles.
Nero tilted his head. "Yeah, okay. For nonmagickal, I'm thinking darts? I have a board in my shed. We could go best two out of three." He paused a moment. "For something with magick, how about layered hexes? We'll start at the same time and see who finishes first?"
Hattie added a stipulation. "Somewhere neutral for the runes and hexes. That way neither of us has an advantage over the other." She flashed a smile. "I'm not worried about the darts. Two out of three makes it fair." Settling back, she sipped more coffee.
Nero set his empty cup on the ottoman. "I think we're good to go. Like you said, we can use Monday if we need tiebreakers for anything." He made to stand up.
Hattie held up a hand. "Hold up a minute. I'm already one ahead of you with the coffee. I think we should switch nights. You cook tonight and I'll cook tomorrow." She had to give him a shot at keeping things even.
Nero narrowed his gaze again. "You need to get groceries, don't you?" The sly twist to his lips gave away his teasing.
She snorted. "No, but I was thinking we could maybe get the dart game out of the way after dinner." Mainly because she wanted to see him in his own space to get some ideas for the layered hexes.
Nero shrugged. "Let's say seven for dinner." He got up and started for the door. "Don't be late."
She grinned. "Wouldn't dream of it. See you then."

Having a lot of fun with this one. Competing as a get to know each other outside of their professional setting is a hoot to write.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Kindred Spirits

The winter blast is still underway. I'd love to send some of our precipitation out to California to combat the wildfires burning LA right now. Another 3-5 inches of snow in the next day or so. Thankfully, I don't have to really go out for anything until the end of the week.

I made progress on my side project. I have a few more things to upload and some links to get set, then I'll hopefully be ready to launch. I also did some future planning on what manuscripts to focus on next. At least it's movement!

Very light work week again. Still working on the readthrough for my friend and I completed a manuscript proofread. Hoping to have another new one to get started on this week.

Not a bad week for viewing. I had some distractions but nothing major. I also think I've found the next show I want to watch on one of my streamers.

Finished up the premier episode of London Kills. This is definitely going to be a wild season. Can't wait to see more.

Caught another episode of Death in Paradise. Kind of sad to see JP leaving but excited to see what happens next. Marlon is growing on me so that's a good thing.

Started the spinoff Beyond Paradise and enjoyed the opening episode. I'm interested to see where things go with Humphrey and Martha. Not sure about Martha's mom. So far, not a fan. I do love the team and look forward to more interactions with them.

Watched another episode of Elementary. Enjoyed the dynamic with the Sherlock regular, the math guy. Also kind of enjoyed the Joan and Kitty scenes. I'm not sure what's going on with Kitty but I don't think she's really committed to the group therapy thing. We'll see if I'm right about that…

Finished up the second part of the opening episodes of Batman Beyond. I'm excited about this rewatch. The theme song alone makes it worth another visit to this one.

Enjoyed another Classic Rugrats episode. This one was the launch of All Growed Up and I hadn't seen the bookend with the original babies. Such a fun episode.

Also finished up an episode of Peak Practice, which I ended up liking. Will is still a bit of a prat but and I really, really dislike the finance guy, but overall, this ended up being a great episode.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Kindred Spirits, a novella that mixes a little multiple partner fun with magic at a mage academy.

Here's the miniblurb:

Merrit Rhodes accepts a teaching position at the Athena Academy of Magic and Semblance to earn her rites. Vaughn Gregorvich and Kirby Selwig are best friends and fellow instructors who fall hard for the newest addition to the campus. Sparks literally fly when the trio decides to test the power of three after a night of drinking a powerfully potent new cocktail called Elixir.

And a preview snippet…

Merrit had a dilemma.
How did I even try to ignore the simmering awareness and sexual tension with these two guys?
Kirby put her at ease. His running commentary while they gathered what she'd need for uniforms and her new living space entertained and informed. He acted like a big goofball, but she didn't miss the agile way he moved or the controlled lion-like grace to his stride. He had an aura of openness and a flair for the dramatic. Merrit enjoyed his company.
But Vaughn … well … he made her hyperaware of his presence. He stalked through the stores with a panther-like quality, something almost regal, but deep and dark. Something about him stayed hidden in the shadows and he didn't feel like sharing. Walking a finely honed blade might be the way to describe the vibe she got from him. Instinct screamed one wrong move would send the knife plunging deep into her heart and mind.
The idea thrilled and terrified her in equal measure.
Fingers snapped in front of her. "Hello? Merrit, you still with us?" Kirby's raised eyebrow gave him a rakish look.
Merrit shook her head. "Sorry. Yes. What were you saying?" The men each had several shopping bags in hand, while she also carried two on either side.
Vaughn smirked. "He asked if you know what Dean Hargrove's first name is?"
Merrit paused a moment. "Honestly? I don't. None of the correspondence referred to him as anything but Dean Hargrove."
Kirby grinned. "That's his name."
Confused, Merrit stopped walking. "What is?"
Vaughn cracked a smile, a sly twist to his lips.
Merrit laughed. "You're kidding. His name is Dean Hargrove and he's the dean of Athertons?" Kind of a weird and wild coincidence.
Kirby nodded. "Absolutely!" He leaned in. "You're pretty quick on the uptake. Most new recruits don't catch on until at least the third of questioning back and forth."
Merrit shot a quick glance toward Vaughn. Had he meant to give away the joke? His wry response had clued her in.
She shrugged. "I'm just lucky, I guess." She always tried to downplay her intuitiveness.
Kirby snorted. "Or maybe you have strong oracle fu—like your mom."
Merrit raised her brows. "How much do you two know about me?" Her history had pockets of secrets.
Vaughn rolled a shoulder. "Not as much as you think. Kirby's talent is drawing people out, but you're proving to be a tough case."
She smiled. "Good."
Kirby blinked. "Good?" He made what she could only refer to as a confused dog sound.
Merrit gave a nod. "Yes. I have a feeling things come way too easily for you two. A challenge will keep you on your toes."
Kirby sputtered and mumbled something unintelligible.
But Vaughn surprised her. He threw his head back and laughed. The man needed to do that more often.
Holy shit.

I'm having so much fun writing this trio. The sages are having a good time feeding me this story.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Juvenile Behavior

Seasons' Greetings!

For whatever holiday you celebrate, I hope you have a joyous time filled with cheer and merriment. We'll be low key per usual with a trip to my dad's and hopefully some FaceTime with my brother in Arizona.

The weather is still playing back and forth. We have a bit of snow and it's pretty cold right now. The temps are supposed to warm up into the forties and fifties over the next few days.

Finished up two projects this week and have one on my plate. January looks to be shaping up with multiple projects and I'm so grateful for those. The short break gives me some time to finish getting my side project ready to launch and I hope to do that next week during the holiday.

Only a semi-good week of viewing. I had some big cleaning projects to work on and got a good bit of that completed. Still working on a few others and hope to have them finished before the end of the year.

Watched another episode of Mr and Mrs Murder. I remember parts of this one but hadn't seen the entire episode. Ended up being pretty good.

Also watched an episode of London Kills. The plot thickens regarding the disappearance of David's wife. Looking forward to seeing how that ends up being resolved. Also enjoying Billie so much on this show.

Enjoyed the one hundredth episode of Death in Paradise. So lovely to have Camille back for a brief stay. Also nice to see Spirit Richard. This also marks, in my opinion, when Catherine and Selwyn take on larger roles in the show. Looking forward to rounding out season ten with the last two episodes.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Juvenile Behavior, a novella that gives a couple an opportunity to see if they'd make a good match.

Here's the miniblurb:

Freddie and Owen, top adepts putting cadets through their paces at the Mage Academy, are very much in love but refuse to act on their attraction. But when the Mage Principal has enough of their antics, he strips them of their rank and tenure and pushes them to act like grown-ups instead of juvenile delinquents.

And a preview snippet…

Freddie entered the house through the servants' entrance and made her way to the kitchen. "Hi, Helen." She gave the older woman a hug.
Helen released her, leaning back to get a look at Freddie. "I suggest you go right in to see your uncle." Her lips twisted in a frown.
Freddie tilted her head to one side. "Has he been treating you poorly?" Stupid question, because of course he would.
Roderick treated everyone with terrible disregard.
Helen tsked. "No and we'll talk later." She shooed Freddie toward the main house.
Freddie knocked once and entered her uncle's suite. "What do you want, Uncle?" Her brows drew together at his appearance.
Debauched didn't quite cover the description. Roderick wore a pajama-and-robe set with leather slippers on his feet. His eyes were bloodshot, and stubble covered his face. Unlike Owen, who looked sexy with some scruff on his face, Roderick looked ill kept and disheveled.
Roderick sneered in her direction. "What did you think you'd accomplish by siccing your boy toy on me?" He growled the words.
Freddie's eyes narrowed. "What the hell are you talking about?" As if she'd willingly make anyone talk to her uncle.
Roderick snorted. "I'm talking about that Parker weanling barging in here and all but accusing me of neglect where you're concerned." He got up and paced back and forth. "Didn't take two seconds to figure out he's fucking you." His face twisted in a grimace. "Had the gall to suggest I look into setting the codicil aside." He barked out a laugh. "As if I'd ever do that."
Freddie blinked but otherwise hid her surprise and anger … at both men.
Owen had no right to confront her uncle behind her back. But … at least he gave enough of a damn to call Roderick out for the bullshit way he hoarded the fortune. And Roderick summoning her to the manor to give her shit about something Owen did pissed her off.
She widened her stance and folded her arms over her chest. "First of all, I didn't send Owen. He a grown-ass man and makes his own decisions." Even if said decisions were terrible. "Second, what he doesn't realize is how much of an asshat you are or how much you love the precious Rudd money." She dropped her arms and leaned forward, placing her hands on the desk. "Grandfather would lose his shit if he knew how much of his fortune you've already gone through." At the rate her uncle spent money, he'd be broke within a decade.
Roderick huffed out a breath. "Yeah? Well, Granddad would lose even more of his shit if he knew you were letting a Parker bang you." He made another grimace of distaste.
What she had with Owen amounted to so much more than banging. Even if she'd tried to only focus on the sex at first. She'd been engaged in a losing battle on that front.
Freddie shrugged, feigning indifference. "Maybe so, but I don't care about the family money. You're the one with that affliction." And he'd raise an unholy stink if his precious funds ended up going to charity.
Roderick gave her a cold smirk. "You're right. And since I do care, you'll end the farce with Parker now." He slapped his hand on the desk for emphasis.
Freddie made a bold statement. "It's not a farce. I love him. But your worry is moot. It won't be long before Owen and I go back to being nothing but work colleagues." She made to turn and leave, but Roderick gestured with his hands, using a binding spell on her.
I should have seen that coming.
He leaned forward. "Make sure that's how it plays out, dear niece. I don't mind playing dirty when I have to."
Freddie snarled. "Resorting to threats isn't necessary, dear uncle. I don't break my word." She tried to move, but the spell still held her. "Let me go or I'll make sure you never successfully get it up for the rest of your life." She could play just as dirty as her uncle.
He released her and she exited his study shaking with rage. She made her way to the kitchen and met Helen's hug. Blinking back tears, she accepted the comfort for a few moments. Then she eased back and exhaled slowly.
Helen's gaze went dark and stormy. "That went as well as I thought it would. But using a binding spell? That's lower than low." Helen didn't hide being livid over Roderick's treatment of Freddie. "One day that man will get his comeuppance." Placing a palm on Freddie's cheek, Helen's lips curved in a sad smile. "And I understand your anger at Owen, but I also think that Parker is a keeper."
Freddie's eyes widened. "You talked to him?"
Helen nodded. "I did. Such a charming man." She waited a beat. "He loves you, Freddie. It's obvious."
Freddie's shoulders slumped. "I love him, too. But he shouldn't have come here. The only thing he achieved is to stir up Roderick's ire and make him angry. Any thought I had of possibly living a quiet life with Owen is gone."
Helen hugged her again. "We'll see about that, Freddie. Just enjoy him for now." She squeezed Freddie's hand. "And don't be too hard on him."

This is a fun story even with some heavy family drama. Freddie and Owen are a cool couple to write.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Just One Moment (Paranormal)

Ohio is back to being contrary with its weather. Super cold days in the teens followed by a warmup of midfifties. My sinuses hate this kind of back and forth.

Had a fairly busy work week with a new project landing in my inbox. It's one of my favorite authors to edit and proofread for. Also spent a lot of time pulling my tax stuff together. I realized last week I hadn't filed for 2023 yet. Better late than never.

Not a bad week of viewing. I didn't make a full round of my usual slate of shows, but I got most of the way through. Again, my sleep schedule is playing havoc with my brain.

Watched another episode of Mr and Mrs Murder and thoroughly enjoyed it. A lot of familiar faces in this one, which is always fun.

Caught another episode of London Kills and I'm kind of excited about Rob and Vivienne teaming up to investigate David. Of course, there's more to the story and I can't wait to find out what's really going on.

Enjoyed another episode of Death in Paradise. I'd seen most of this one but it's nice to follow the whole story from beginning to end instead of catching bits and pieces all the time.

Finished up season twenty-seven of Silent Witness. Gotta say, I really enjoyed the finale. Jack proposing to Nikki made my heart happy. And I'm interested to see what happens with Jack's place. Maybe Kara and Velvy will stay there.

Watched another episode of Elementary and enjoyed it. Still not a Mycroft fan even if he had extenuating reasons for being an ass. I am kind of glad Sherlock isn't going to throw his brother under the bus. At least I don't think he is. The next episode should reveal what will happen.

And that's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Just One Moment, a themed sexy short written in tandem with my other two alter egos.

Here's the miniblurb:

A life-threatening situation and a couple in love. Just one moment for Sygin and Boyd to say everything that needs to be said.

And a preview snippet…

Sygin stalked out of the meeting chambers barely hanging on to her temper. "I can't believe they're taking a wait-and-see approach." An attempt to invade the campus should warrant a response.
Boyd fell into step beside her. "Not sure why they think what happened over the solstice holiday is a one-off. Especially when they recommended the precautions." He tsked.
Sygin shook her head. "I'm not relying on the buddy system. Too many things can go wrong. Are we really going to let this play out until someone gets hurt?" Her blood boiled over the stupid bureaucracy.
Because even if their nemeses were only trying to test the boundaries of dark magick—as the council concluded during the meeting—the sinister aspect of using their campus should have them all worried a hell of a lot more than they were.
Boyd snorted. "You know better than that." He stopped at the edge of the corridor and tugged her into a testing alcove. "We're going to take chances with our students. We're gonna start preparing our quad to act as an early warning system." He flicked his gaze toward the clock on the wall. "Starting tonight."
Sygin's lips curved. "See. That right there is the reason we're together." He practically read her mind on the way to skate the line of being proactive while not outright thumbing their noses at the council.
Boyd narrowed his eyes. "I thought we were together because I make you scream my name during sex."
Sygin laughed. "Not gonna lie. That's a big part of it also." She sobered. "But you're the whole package, which is infinitely more appealing than your expertise in bed." Which actually said a lot because Boyd played her like a maestro between the sheets.
He grasped her hips and hauled her closer. "That's good to know." His fingers tilted her chin up and his mouth captured hers.
Sygin leaned into the kiss. Boyd's tongue swept against hers, dueling for dominance. The man had magick in his lips. And his hands. And, well, everywhere else. She wound her arms around his neck and let all of her anger go, relaxing into his embrace.
He eased back, tracing her thumb over her jawline. "I'd love nothing more than heading back to our place to finish what we started here, but…" He dropped a kiss on her nose.
Sygin sighed. "Right. It'll have to wait." Her palms slid down his chest. "We've got work to do and no time for the undeniably more fun option." Stepping back, she hooked a finger into his waistband. "But we're picking this back up after we make a plan with our quad."
Boyd gave her a wicked smile. "I'll hold you to that."
Sygin smirked. "You'd better."

I like writing in this universe. Boyd and Sygin have a couple more stories coming in the near future.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Jump

Welcome, December! I'm truly not sure what this month will bring. I'm at a weird place where I feel kind of stuck and a little buried under the weight of needing to get things done … but I have no idea where to start.

Work slowed down a little, which isn't a great thing. But it did give me some time to spend with my daughter when she came home for Thanksgiving break. I'm so grateful for that time. And December still looks to be booked with projects for the most part.

The temperature did drop but didn't quite dip into the teens. I'm really not ready for the arctic blast yet. But it does help get me in a mood for the holidays.

Had a semi-decent week of viewing. My sleep schedule is all over the place again and that doesn't always make for a good attention span.

Watched the season two premiere episode of London Kills. Nice to see Billie back in action. I'm interested in the ongoing arc from season one. This cast is stellar, and I love the changing dynamics between them.

Caught another episode of Death in Paradise. I'm starting to find some redeeming value in Neville. I liked the way he kind of helped Florance. Really not sure about Marlon.

Enjoyed part one of Silent Witness. Loving some inside looks at Jack and Nikki and the mystery is kind of amazing. I have no idea where things are going and that's always fun.

Watched another episode of Elementary. Mycroft is an ass and maybe that's a good thing. He definitely has some explaining to do. I do give him kudos for being able to manipulate Sherlock even if I hate that he could. And I'm going to be really pissed if Sherlock decides Joan is his weakness and starts acting like a bigger ass than Mycroft.

Caught an episode of The Batman and it's one I don't remember watching previously. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Having a team that is completely opposite of Batman and Robin was fun.

Enjoyed another episode of Classic Rugrats. I think it's the final one where the whole episode is one story. I kind of wish there were more of those.

And that's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Jump, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the miniblurb:

A group of young adults comes into their mage power much later than usual. Sima Hood and Dario Burgos are the de facto leaders of the raw recruits when they're trapped and pinned down by a faction of dark sorcerers who want to groom them for their side, but Sima and Dario receive guidance from one of the elder mages who help them escape and lead them to safety.

And a preview snippet…

Sima Hood shook her head back and forth. "No way am I working with Dario Burgos. You've got to be testing the limits of my patience with this request." She certainly hoped the elder mage didn't really think putting her with Dario would be a good idea.
Marco Lambert gave her a steady look. "Sima, I don't have time to argue this point with you. Twelve raw recruits need a crash course in controlling their powers, and I don't have to tell you it's harder when they haven't been raised with the basics of mage wisdom." He sighed. "This is a huge undertaking, and you can't do it alone." His shoulders slumped.
Sima bit the inside of her lip. Marco didn't wear defeat well. She didn't want to let him down. But she also didn't want to spend the next who knew how many weeks butting heads or anything else with Dario. They did not get along. But the one thing they had in common—coming into their powers in late adolescence instead of the beginning of puberty—made her and Dario uniquely qualified to help this group transition into being proper mages.
Dammit.
She couldn't say no to the man who mentored her and helped her make the transition to becoming a functioning mage. He'd also done the same for Dario … which became part of the reason she struggled to get along with her fellow mage proctor. They didn't have an easy road, and they clashed frequently during their training.
Sima squared her shoulders. "Okay. This is going to be a complete shitshow, but you can count on me." A promise she might end up regretting.
Especially with Dario involved.
Marco's lips quirked in a wry smile. "Not sure this helps, but I heard the same thing from Dario." He chuckled. "Might be the first time you two have ever been on the same page. I consider that a good omen."
A slap might have stung less. But she didn't know if the idea Dario agreed they'd be dealing with a trainwreck bothered her or if the fact the elder mage consulted Dario first kicked harder. Because neither made her happy.
But she'd made a commitment, so Sima tempered her response. "I guess there's a first time for everything." Whether or not they stayed in sync might prove to be the bigger question.
She definitely had doubts.

I'm just getting started on this one and I love having a new story to sink into.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: It's Not What They Think

November is starting off with a wild trajectory. The election in the US is taking up a lot of air and space in my life and I'm okay with that. It does make it harder to focus on anything but the election, which isn't optimal for my work projects.

That said, I'm weirdly calm and very hopeful. Which is not to say I'm complacent because that would be stupid and reckless. There's going to be a lot of work to do regardless of who wins the presidency, senate, and house.

My tricky manuscript turned extremely challenging, but I finally got it finished up late last night. Now I can focus on a couple of projects that were simmering on the back burner and start two new ones that need attention.

Had an okay week of viewing. Trick or treat night took up some time and an unexpected accident involving my oldest and his fiancé needed my attention. Thankfully, both are okay and weren't injured in the crash.

I started the week with an episode of Elementary and I also ended the week with one. Both were enjoyable. I thoroughly enjoy the vibe when Sherlock tries to coordinate outfits for Joan. So far, it looks like she ditches those in favor of choosing her own.

Caught an episode of The Batman and enjoyed it. Nice to see Batgirl back in action. I'll be finished with this show at the end of this season and I'm not sure what I'll be replacing it with.

Also watched an episode of Classic Rugrats. The three vignettes were new to me again. I think I'm going to shift back to the new Rugrats once I'm through this season.

Enjoyed another episode of Mr. and Mrs. Murder. I'd seen most of this one before and really enjoyed the snappy and snarky dialog between the characters.

Caught another episode of London Kills and, whew, I got spoiled for what would happen and it still freaked me out. Really like this series.

Finished up season nine of Death in Paradise. Looking forward to season ten even with some of my misgivings with DI Parker. I love this show enough to give him time to grow on me.

Enjoyed the second half of Silent Witness. The show managed to surprise me, and I love it when that happens. One thing to note … I'm always curious about where Jack and Nikki live. Jack had such a cool house during the last season and now he seems to be in a townhouse of some sort. This is after he bought the fixer-upper that his dad and brother (for a while) shared with him. Weird stuff makes me curious.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from It's Not What They Think, a novella that puts a couple through the wringer when one of them can't control their power.

Here's the miniblurb:

Meaghan Wrath goes on the warpath, losing her hard-won control over her powers and wreaking havoc on unsuspecting clan members. She's setting a crappy example, but her husband, Vinnie Grayson, walks a fine line by not reprimanding her. Her need let off steam and be rebellious never lasts long—usually the week leading up to the full moon—and a demand to stop will only land her on the hot seat—almost literally.

And a preview snippet…

Vinnie faced the group of elders with a short leash on his temper. "For the last time, Meghan doesn't know what's going on or why it's happening." And he shouldn't be the one caught in the middle.
Master Mayhew pointed a long, bony finger at Vinnie. "You've got to get that woman under control." He gave a definitive nod when Elderman Vice grunted in agreement.
Vinnie arched his brows. "That woman is one of the most powerful mages we have. It's fine to use her when it suits your purposes, but when she's venting pent-up magick it's a problem." He got tired of the same old arguments.
Master Janson growled. "No one else is allowed to use their ability in the manner she's been using hers. Parlor tricks and light shows are beneath our level of achievement." He gave a derisive sniff.
Elderman Vice slowly nodded with another sound of agreement slipping from his lips.
Frustrated, Vinnie sighed. "No one wields the kind of power she does. So, there's a criterium for special circumstances." He shouldn't have to explain this. "And, hey, if any of you want to step up and help find some answers, you're welcome to do it." He paused a moment. "You are, after all, the elders, not to mention the ruling council. Isn't it your job to not only seek a solution but to assist in finding one?"
An uncomfortable silence followed his outburst, which bordered on a tirade. Perhaps he'd pushed too hard. Too effing bad. Meghan needed some room to figure out why she couldn't seem to keep her powers under control. The stodgy mages could either step up or shut up.
Or kiss his ass if they chose to do nothing.
He waited one more minute before he turned and started for the exit. If the old bastards weren't going to help, why waste time or act like their whipping post.
"Mr. Grayson, you haven't been dismissed yet," Elderman Vice, the head of council, called out.
Vinnie glanced over his shoulder. "I know. Yet here I am, still leaving." He pushed the doors open and sailed out of the room.
He barely contained the urge to flip the entire group off.
He and Meghan were on their own and Vinnie would stand by her until they got answers.

Vinnie is a great guy and he's done talking to the elders, especially if they're not going to help.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!
