Sunday Snippet: One of These Things

Geez, August has been a brutal month. The last week in particular. Not sure why, but I struggled hard, couldn't stay focused, and generally feel like I didn't get anything accomplished. Bleh.

Weirdly, the weather has been amazing. We need rain in a big way, but the temperatures were mild, which is a blessing. Actually had to break out a jacket and leggings because it got chilly at night.

Work projects are in a weird state of flux. I have a lot on my plate, and I hopped around multiple projects because of the aforementioned struggle to stay focused. I really hope I can get back on task this week.

I didn't get to watch the season two opener of Reacher, but I did make it through most of my regular shows. The first week of September is a chaos monster so I'm not sure if I'll get to make it through my regular slate of shows. Fingers crossed.

I did start the week with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and enjoyed the rewatch. Always fun when Phryne and company go on trips.

Caught another episode of Madame Blanc Mysteries. I liked the mystery and my heart broke for Dom and Jean. But Jean was spot on with telling Dom he might not be ready to be a couple.

Watched the opening to season fourteen Death in Paradise. Still not sure if I'm down with the new guy. He might grow on me, and I do like how Naomi and Darlene hold their own with him.

Enjoyed another episode of Poirot. Very fun to see him solve the mystery while not leaving his apartment. And I do think he quite loves to put Hastings in horribly embarrassing positions.

Caught another episode of Elementary. I really like it when Joan and Sherlock team up to help their extended group. Detective Bell's dilemma being resolved ended up being a lot of fun.

Watched another episode of Batman Beyond. I didn't fully remember this one, so I enjoyed getting reacquainted with it.

The episode of Lower Decks I watched is hopefully a turning point. Mariner makes me absolutely bonkers, which I'm pretty sure is the whole point. Here's hoping she can dial it back about ten clicks and I can finally settle in and like the character.

I did almost make it through an episode of Peak Practice that I started a couple of weeks ago. Sam is headed for a very bad place, which makes sense since his run is almost finished. Hoping to get the rest of the episode watched this week.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from One of These Things, a novella that puts a spin on the ugly duckling story.

Here's the miniblurb:

Tanis Watts comes of age in the human world but discovers she has fae abilities. When she's caught between warring factions, she falls in with the wrong side and barely escapes with her life. Seeking sanctuary, she lands on Falco Corsair's doorstep and runs headfirst into her destiny.

And a preview snippet…

Tanis remained silent until her rescuer led her through a hidden access point in the main wall of the estate. "Now that we're clear, let me thank you and suggest you get as far away from here as possible." She glanced over her shoulder. "Do you have any idea how big the steaming pile is you just stepped in?" Especially for saving her.
The guy gave a terse nod. "I was you five years ago, so yeah, I've got a pretty solid picture of the shitstorm I've unleashed." He nodded toward the card she still held clasped between her fingers. "Go to Innispoint. They'll grant sanctuary." He shrugged. "At least they did for me."
Tanis turned the small rectangle over in her hand. "You're a member of the White then?" The Light Keepers—counterpoint to the Dark Guard—kept a residence at Innispoint.
The man snorted. "Not likely. As a midliner, I'm neutral. But when I got rescued, I made a promise to help whenever I got the call." He met her gaze. "I got the call for you."
Tanis frowned. "Who contacted you?" She didn't know many of the White brethren, and definitely no one who would care if she lived or died.
The guy huffed out a breath. "Just a voice on the phone. That's it." He turned and started to make his way through a thicket of underbrush.
Tanis scrambled to catch up. "Look, I appreciate the help, but I'm serious when I say you need to lay low. Better yet, take a vacation somewhere that isn't here."
The man grunted. "Yeah, I'll think about it."
Tanis hesitated a moment. "What's your name?" Maybe that would give her a clue about who wanted her alive.
His eyes narrowed a little. "Brevan Hollis. And no offense, but I hope you'll forget you ever saw me." He lifted his chin and darted forward, pulling brambles and briars in his wake.
Tanis tucked the card into her pocket. "Thanks again, Brevan. Here's hoping I don't find your name in the death herald anytime soon." She ducked low and carefully made her way toward the river.
From there she'd pick up the path that led to Innispoint and hopefully get some answers.
"Why would anyone from the White save me?"

I'm pleased with how this story is coming together. Tanis is not going to be thrilled when she discovers why she's been saved.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Old Wounds

The first full week of August kind of flew by. We had a power outage and mobile phone outage on the same night, which made for a long six hours. Also kind of weird since there wasn't a storm or anything that would be a normal reason for the loss.

Very busy week with work projects and September is looking like another busy month. I'm definitely not complaining. I miss having dedicated writing time, but I also squeeze that in whenever I can.

The school year starts next week, which means the husband will be at his new position in the elementary school. He truly wishes he'd had this job thirty years ago. I can't blame him. He drove almost an hour each way for twenty-plus years. The schools in our district are all less than five miles away and the elementary school is three blocks from our house.

Had my daughter home for several days this week and we had a great time catching up. She even had me cut her hair, which turned out really well. Always love it when she asks me to help with stuff like that.

Had a solid viewing week and made it through my whole slate of shows, including my two back-burner ones. Not sure what the upcoming week will bring but hoping to keep on target.

Started the week with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and finished up the first season. Can't wait to start season two. Another one of my favorite episodes is coming up.

Caught another Madame Blanc Mysteries and really enjoyed the twisty turns in this one. This season is shaping up to be a lot of fun. I like Charlie and Simone so it's good to see them again.

Watched another episode of Death in Paradise and it's the penultimate episode before the season thirteen finale. So great to have Florence back, even if only for a brief time. Looking forward to the finale.

Enjoyed an episode of Poirot. This one was a lot of fun, especially having Poirot sneaking into a house and getting caught. And spending a night in jail to boot!

Caught an episode of Elementary and very much enjoyed Sherlock figuring out Alfredo needed some support. The mystery ended up being pretty interesting also.

Watched another episode of Batman Beyond and it's one I remembered. Always fun to see Bruce and Barbara spar, and I loved Terry trusting Bruce to help him.

Lower Decks again charmed and annoyed me. I've come to kind of accept that's how this show is going to be for me. I did really like the teamwork in this one.

Finished up the episode of Peak Practice from last week and even started the new episode. Have to finish it this week.

Finally, Reacher. Man. This show. I truly get the hype around it. So many revelations. Finlay. Yeah, didn't see that one coming. Explains a lot. Roscoe. Badass. Seriously. I'm on the fence with Charlie's admission about Hubbel. I think there's more to the story there. And Reacher having the light-bulb moment with the last-standing professor was excellent. Here's hoping she stays alive. Can't wait to watch the next episode!

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Old Wounds, a novella that explores what one member of a couple is willing to do to support the other.

Here's the miniblurb:

When Abbot Isley's father lies near death, Nixie Grimm is willing to open old wounds to help him cope. Taking a trip down memory lane is not her favorite thing, but Abbot's steadfast support triggers a healing process she didn't know she needed and lets her move forward—with Abbot.

And a preview snippet…

Abbot loved Nixie. She cut to the chase without being nasty. He didn't have the cranial fortitude to go a full round with Barton. Punching the other man in the face ranked at the top of Abbot's list right now.
Wence lifted his chin. "We're trying, Abbot. I've called in the best."
Finally, some good news.
Abbot gave a nod. "Does that mean Kira is on board?" Kira Landry topped the list as the most talented among them.
She wove intricate spells and her knowledge of magickal healing rivaled Barton's entire team. Abbot had a deep well of respect for her even if she often disagreed with the council's methods of ruling the realm.
Barton glanced away. "Well, no. We didn't think Isaac would appreciate having his arch nemesis and leading detractor trying to heal him." His gaze snapped back to Abbot.
Abbot waved a hand. "I don't care. Get her in." He looked toward Nixie who gave a nod. "I'm confident Kira will put their differences aside and help." He paused a moment. "Honestly? She's probably my dad's only chance." He wouldn't share why he chose to be so adamant … but Kira and his father love each other deeply.
They were often at odds when it came to mage politics, but she'd move and use whatever she has at her disposal to make sure Isaac lived.
Wence opened his mouth to argue, but Nixie held up a hand and jerked her head back and forth. "Don't. You said yourself you're trying, and you called in the best. If you haven't called Kira, you have not called in the best."
Barton's face flamed red. "Abbot, why would you want her here? She's so…" He trailed off, either unwilling or unable to finish his thought.
Abbot didn't have that problem. "She's unconventional. Is that it? Nothing you've done has worked so far. She won't be afraid to dig in and solve the problem."
Wence tsked. "I won't have her meddling. She can't just come in here—"
Abbot cut him off. "Yes. She can. You can take your best and get out. Now."
Barton backpedaled. "Now, Abbot. Hold on a second here."
Nixie stepped between the men. "You heard him." She angled her head around. "I'll make the call. Go be with your dad." She grasped Barton's elbow and yanked him toward the door.
Abbot heaved a sigh. He'd be lost without Nix right now.

I'm rather happy with how this story is coming together. Two strong characters offering comfort or a swift kick is fun to write.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Not on the Same Page

It's the weekend of trying to keep my doggos from losing their minds. I love fireworks, don't get me wrong, but I feel for all the pets out there that freak out over them.

I continued with the great cleanout stuff this week. Honestly, I did more organizing than cleaning but being organized helps make cleaning and clearing a little easier.

I'm finally at a manageable level of projects. I have a few odds and ends to finish on a couple of them but they're with the authors or the designer and I'm waiting in the wings to review revisions.

Had another decent viewing week. Having a lighter workload does help. And I'm not as scattered on the attention span side of things.

Started out with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I'm finding new things in the episodes, which is one of the reasons I love to rewatch a series I've seen before.

Watched another episode of Art Detectives and I'm enjoying this show. I'm very interested in the backstory of Mack's dad. I'm also hoping for more backstory with his partner.

Caught another episode of Death in Paradise. Good to see the commissioner's daughter again. The mystery also ended up being intriguing.

Enjoyed another episode of Poirot. Very fun to not have a big murder to solve and see how Poirot uses his skill to ferret out what's going on.

Watched another episode of Elementary and, wow, season three ended on a big downer. I'm still trying to decide if Sherlock ended up relapsing or if he's just horribly distraught from Oscar's machinations. Oscar needs to die in a fire. Just saying.

Caught another episode of Batman Beyond and it's one I remembered. Loved the spin on an urban legend that had a grain of truth in it.

Started a new to me series with The Lower Decks. Enjoyed the first episode and ended up being happy I clocked the relationship between the captain and the know-it-all crew member. I'll enjoy watching more of this one.

Ended the week on an episode of Peak Practice. A lot going on in this one. And the tragic leap Will's patient made kind of surprised me. Kerry finding out the truth about her parentage kind of bummed me out, but I'm also seriously irritated by her parents being such ninnies about the whole thing. Definitely feel bad for Sam.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Not on the Same Page, a novella that explores how a couple works through differing viewpoints.

Here's the miniblurb:

Irini Domaine loves Nathair Sofen but marries another to fulfill a familial obligation. When she suggests carrying on the relationship with Nathair he coldly refuses, which makes Irini vow to slowly but surely convince him otherwise and unknown to her, her life may depend on the connection with Nathair.

And a preview snippet…

Irini waited a full month before seeking Nathair out.
Standing on the threshold to his cottage, she inhaled deeply. "Nothing to fear from him. Once I explain, he'll get why I did what did." He had to.
Raising her hand, she let out a small gasp when the door opened before she could knock.
Nathair greeted her with a cool gaze. "What do you want, Iri?" His tone bordered on glacial.
Determined to make him understand, she brushed past him. "I want you. I always will." She turned to face him. "And I need you to know that and so much more." They could still be together if they wanted to.
And she definitely desired him above all else.
Nathair swung the door closed. "So much more? As in you married Norj so your father could save face?" He casually strolled through the living room to stand by the fireplace. "Let him sell you to the highest bidder so his good name wouldn't be tarnished?" His gaze clashed with hers. "Is that the so much more you need to share?" He folded his arms over his chest.
Irini blinked. "How did you … no, there's more to it than the family name and money." She raked her hand through her hair. "He made a blood vow. If I didn't honor it, he'd be stripped of his magick and cast out." She'd saved him from that … but at a high cost.
Her father lost his daughter in the process. She hadn't seen or spoken to him since her marriage. And she had no plans to do so in the future.
Nathair made a garbled choking sound. "Your dad used you as the tithe? Geez, Iri. It's been over a century since anyone used another person as the payment for a blood vow." Disbelief filled his voice.
Irini snorted. "Yeah, well, his desperation made him reckless, and he took the only avenue open to a founding family with no money in the coffer." She shrugged. "But that doesn't mean I have to play by his rules. As a matter of fact, I don't intend to." A little nervous, she paced back and forth. "I did what he required, and I'm done. I haven't seen or spoken to him since the wedding." That had to count for something.
Nathair's brow furrowed. "And what? How does that make any kind of difference. You're still married."
She drew her lower lip between her teeth for a moment. "I don't care." She edged closer to him. "I didn't ask to be bartered against my dad's debts. I shouldn't have to play by his or anyone else's rules." Her fingers clasped his shirt and twisted in the fabric.
Nathair lips flattened. "You started playing by their rules the moment you accepted the proposal." His eyes flared … but not with anger.
Want and need resided in his depths.
She leaned in closer. "Maybe. But I don't have to continue…" And she wouldn't … if Nathair would fall in with her plan.
He cocked his head to one side. "You don't? How do you see that working out?"
Her mouth hovered over his. "Like this…" She embraced him with every pent-up desire she had…
And never wanted to let him go.

This story gets a little twisted and I'm very happy with the way it's coming together.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Not Enough Hope

If anyone is headed into a major heat wave this week like I am, stay hydrated! And try to stay cool, especially if your location is as humid as mine is. Humidity is a nightmare.

Had a busy and productive week. Making good progress on two of my projects and sliding in some random finishing bits on a few others.

Started a huge cleanup job in the kitchen. My poor countertops need to be reorganized and cleared of clutter. I got the largest one scrubbed down and mostly organized. Still need to find a new home for a few items.

Also have some mundane tasks to plow through this week. Not sure I'll make it but I can't put it off any longer. My procrastination skills are top notch!

Had a decent viewing week. I ended up making it through my usual slate of shows, which rather makes me happy.

Started with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and enjoyed the episode again. The characters in Phyrne's past are always fun.

Caught another episode of Art Detectives and, I have to say, I thoroughly enjoy this show. Looking forward to the next episode.

Watched the season thirteen holiday special of Death in Paradise and enjoyed meeting Neville's mom. Should be fun to watch the last season of Inspector Parker's tenure.

Enjoyed another episode of Poirot. Kind of fun to see him on holiday and solving a murder. I'll admit the resolution came together a little oddly for me but an interesting episode nonetheless.

Caught another episode of Elementary and quite enjoyed Sherlock's revelations about friendship. So fun to watch Marcus chill with Sherlock at the end.

Watched another episode of Batman Beyond. Having the Royal Flush gang back proved fun. Also like Terry making a solid choice at the end to stick with Dana.

Enjoyed an episode of Classic Rugrats. The holiday themed episode is one I remember and I really need to add it to my holiday watch list if I do one this year.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Not Enough Hope, a novella that reunites a couple after almost a decade apart.

Here's the miniblurb:

Early Gibbons walks away from her position in the fae court—and Salem Powell—to forge her own path in the human realm. When she discovers a vengeance hound on her trail, she returns to the land of fae to find out who unleashed the beast, which may be tricky since Salem is the leader, and she can't discount him as the culprit.

And a preview snippet…

Early let her head fall back against the cushions of the couch. "Thanks for letting me stay here last night, but this place is too nice for me to stay any longer…" She angled her head toward the chair. "Not that you'd let me." At least she'd had a few hours to plan her next move.
Salem narrowed his gaze. "Look … as much as I'm reluctant to get involved with this, I can't ignore your situation." He exhaled slowly. "It's my literal job to sort this out." He lifted the mug to his mouth and took a deep gulp of the coffee.
Early shook her head. "It's really not. I haven't been a member of the group for nearly a decade. You don't owe me anything."
Salem set his cup on the table. "Maybe not. But I do owe the people who trust me to lead them." He leaned forward and laced his fingers together. "Vengeance hounds tend to stay their course until they're either recalled by whoever summoned them or they achieve the goal they were sent to do." Meeting her gaze, he shrugged. "You'll have to stay in the realm until we figure out the who and why." He leaned back again. "If you don't want to stay here, and I get why you don't, you'll need to find a place where you can be safe."
Early tilted her head to one side. "You almost sound like it matters." Did she want him to care what happened to her?
Oddly … she did.
Salem frowned. "Considering I didn't give anyone permission to summon a hound it damn well does matter." His brows arched. "As you pointed out, a hound on the loose is dangerous to humans. And now to the fae." His eyes took on a hard edge. "It also tells me something is lurking below the surface. And I have to find out what."
Okay, she couldn't really ask for more, like having her life being in danger topping the list. Especially after she'd walked away. She'd be grateful he would let her stay until the hound no longer posed a threat.
She inclined her chin. "Of course. And it goes without saying that I'll be available for whatever you need." Rising, she gathered her mug and carried it to the kitchen. "I'll clean up and bind the house and yard, so the hound doesn't disturb the property." She poured the coffee out and rinsed the cup.
Salem followed her. "Any thoughts on where you'd like to go?" He set the half-full mug on the counter.
Early gave a nod. "The catacombs. I think they'll be the safest place in the realm." She could possibly contain the hound in the depths, and she'd have plenty of supplies for spells and alchemy.
Salem's head jerked backward. "You're sure? Not many creature comforts there."
Her lips curved. "Not yet anyway." She gave him a sideways glance. "Unless you object to having me make a few changes…" Using her skill set for interior design could be fun.
Salem shook his head. "No. No objections." He propped a hip against the counter. "Let me know when you get settled, and I'll drop by with some of the texts. We can research and compare notes and hopefully find out who sent the hound after you."
She dried her hands. "Okay. Give me until lunchtime. The hound usually lays low during the daylight hours and comes out at night. I bought myself about twenty-four hours, but it won't take it long to find me." She'd bet it already had but wouldn't show its face until darkness fell again.
Salem straightened. "All right. I'll stop in after lunch." He headed for the front entrance. "See you then." Letting himself out, he quietly closed the door behind him.
Early finished cleaning up and repacked her bag. After warding the house and adding a binding spell to the yard, she hefted the strap over her shoulder and started down the lane toward the catacombs.
She had a feeling the memories would assault her before she even arrived at the huge stone caves.
After all, she'd spent many, many hours in the complex with Salem … back when they loved each other more than anything.
But she didn't hold out much hope Salem would have the same onslaught.

Salem and Early want to get through the hard stuff and be reunited, but neither will admit it to the other.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: A Noble Kidnapping

It's been a long week with a lot going on. My dad turned eighty last Sunday and my oldest turned thirty-two. Yep. They have the same birthday. My brothers always give me a bunch a grief over getting my dad a grandson for his birthday.

We had a nice reception for my dad, and I got to reconnect with a lot of people I hadn't seen in a long time. So nice to catch up.

Work projects continue to keep me busy. I'm making good progress but often feel like I'm spinning my wheels because they're big projects that take a lot of back and forth. This isn't a complaint; it's more an observation.

Had a slow viewing week but did manage to get through my main group of shows. The backburner ones didn't make the cut this week.

Started out with Batman Beyond and enjoyed it. I have memories of this one where Terry's secret is exposed and he finally has something of an ally.

Watched another Classic Rugrats and both were new-to-me vignettes. Thoroughly enjoyed the shopping one and the one with the snow was fun also.

Enjoyed another episode of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. As a comfort show, the amazing cast is always ready to help me slide into a happy place. Even if there's a murder to solve.

Caught the season twelve finale of Death in Paradise. Good to see Neville's team work hard to clear him of the professor's death. Nice to see the dangling plot threads tied up also. Looking forward to starting thirteen this week.

Watched another episode of Poirot and rather enjoyed the mystery. A lot gets packed into the hour-long episodes and sometimes feels a little rushed.

Really enjoyed the episode of Elementary with the dual mysteries and some insight into the captain's daughter and how she operates.

Also watched what I think is the first season finale of Return to Paradise. I'm really enjoying this show.

I think I found the new show I'm going to start this week, but I'm not absolutely set. Stay tuned.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from A Noble Kidnapping, a novella that brings childhood friends together under fraught circumstances.

Here's the miniblurb:

Jaina Wraith discovers Seb Morrison is a member of the nobility and she kidnaps him, fully intent on having him executed. When Seb reminds her how many times he's come to her aid, she has to decide whether to help him escape or leave him to a tragic fate.

And a preview snippet…

Jaina stood over her father's grave—two days after her eighteenth birthday. Her mind whirled with too many revelations. The long letter from her father tucked into his patient ledgers explained a lot … and left too much unexplained.
She sighed. "At least you left the book of knowledge for me." She'd need the instructive lessons to wield her new powers.
Ones she'd been unaware of because they passed to her only upon her father's death.
Which happened too soon and under highly suspicious circumstances.
She snorted. "Not that I can prove unlawful killing." Even if she knew in her very bones her dad had been murdered by Hanson Pillwick.
Because her dad refused to use his gift to heal the nobility and Hanson Pillwick discovered Blanton Wraith carried ancestral magick and blamed him for the loss of Hanson's son. He'd had her dad killed, and the act gave Jaina a cause to fight for. And something to ease the depth of her grief.
The nobility would burn—by her hand if possible.
A throat cleared.
Jaina glanced up from her solitary vigil to discover Seb Morrison standing across from her.
He nodded. "I'm sorry for your loss, Jaina."
She noted the changes in him. Taller, broader, but the same intense blue eyes. Always studying and documenting everything in their sight. He'd filled out and become even more handsome.
She thanked him. "I appreciate the condolences." Hyperaware of him, she didn't know what else to say.
He reached out and squeezed her shoulder. "If you ever need anything, let me know." Stepping back, he clasped her hand. "If I'm not immediately available, my mother will get a message to me."
He caught her off guard with the offer. A little touched, her pride wouldn't allow her to accept help or let him into her future plans.
She let go of his hand and lifted her chin. "Thank you for the offer, but I'll be fine." She had a lot of work to do.
He gave her another of his odd, studious looks, but accepted her response. "My sympathies then. I'll take my leave now." He walked away with catlike grace.
Jaina followed his progress until he cleared the gate. A different kind of loss settled over her shoulders. It would be easy to lean on Seb. But she couldn't trust her feelings right now. Anything soft she might feel got crowded out by the need to avenge her father's death.
Two men emerged from the shadows of the crypt beside her. Jocko and Biggs were two tough nuts her dad trusted. By extension, Jaina put her faith in the men. They would be her eyes and ears while she fought to find justice.
Jocko narrowed his gaze on Seb's retreating figure. "Who's the bloke?"
Jaina shrugged. "Someone I used to know a long time ago." A friend she would miss but only in her dreams.
Biggs grunted. "We moved your stuff, like you asked. You sure you wanna come to the dregs with us—"
Jocko cut in. "Yeah, it's not exactly a welcoming place."
Jaina didn't care. "I'm sure." She turned and slowly walked away from her father's final resting place.
She'd find her way, especially when she started taking down the nobles one by one.

This is something of a slow burn romance and I'm enjoying putting the pieces together.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Mr and Mrs Black

May is flying by at a rapid pace. This week has been intense with burning the candle at both ends for me. This is a good day to take some downtime, which I'm trying to do today.

Work exploded this week with multiple projects dropping into my inbox. I have four nonfiction manuscripts and three fiction manuscripts in various stages of editing. I don't normally have seven different projects going at the same time but, so far, I'm managing them. It'll make for a nice June once they're all turned in.

Had an amazing week of viewing. I got a full round of shows in and caught a couple of extras. Also started a new show that might be sporadically viewed until it's available for streaming.

I started a rewatch of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries this week. I'm waiting a some new episodes of a few other shows to drop and this is such a comfort series for me.

Caught another episode of Brokenwood Mysteries and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very twisty and turny, which is always fun.

Enjoyed another episode of Death in Paradise. I'm happy to have some Naomi backstory. I'd love to see a bit more of that for the characters.

Started a from the beginning run of Poirot. I've seen quite a few episodes of this show but haven't watched any of them in order. This is another filler series until new episodes start dropping of my current shows.

Watched another episode of Elementary and quite enjoyed it. I'm always interested when weird cases pop up and the cryogenics angle ended up being interesting.

Caught an episode of Batman Beyond and have some vague memories of the first time I watched it. I'm wondering if the Ts are in any way a throwback to Mr. Terrific. I might have to dive down that rabbit hole at some point.

Enjoyed another episode of Classic Rugrats. I don't remember either of these vignettes and I liked both.

I finished up an episode of Peak Practice and might start another one this week. This is one of my back burner shows and I'm happy I got to finish watching.

Started a new-to-me series and watched Reacher. Gotta say I loved the first episode. I did a bit of dive into write-ups of future seasons, and I think I'll stick with this one.

Also got a minimarathon of Return to Paradise in over the weekend. I'm looking forward to streaming this one when it's available in the US. Really enjoyed the first three episodes and I'm excited to see the rest.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Mr. and Mrs. Black, a novella about a couple whose work makes them keep secrets from each other.

Here's the miniblurb:

Ember Frost and Winter Smoak, assassins for opposing factions, are ordered by their respective employers to kill each other, which would be so much easier if they weren't happily married but hiding some big secrets—like their occupations—from each other.

And a preview snippet…

"That should do it." Keeping the slow boil of anger in check, Ember set the stage.
She'd booby trapped the doors—front, back, and the French doors leading to the patio. Even with the haze of betrayal clouding her vision, she put backup contingencies in place. Because … when it came right down to reality? She honestly didn't know if she could actually pull the metaphorical trigger.
If Win died in an explosion, it would be on him for not being cautious. Right? Then again, she'd never known him to not be vigilant.
She snorted. "Except when it comes to the truth." He'd prevaricated there.
Big time.
And okay, the irony stabbing her in the gut because she also hid her true work from him only calmed the swirling spiral of rage, disappointment, and … if she had to own it … hurt a tiny bit.
Squaring her shoulders, she ran her mental checklist. She had a barrage of spells ready to go. She considering planning a seductive scene to hide the real reason she'd lured him to this location … on the off chance he cased the house first. But why would he do that? She'd asked him to meet ASAP, which could mean anything. Right?
She ruthlessly ignored the small niggle she should dim the lights and start a fire. Could she sneak in one last romp with the man she married? No. She had an assignment, and she would carry it out like she'd done with every other target she'd been handed.
And when her heart broke after she completed the task?
Well … she'd deal with that by never falling for another person again. Ever. She'd sworn to cherish and honor Winter Smoak until her dying breath.
She shook her head. "Should've said until his dying breath."
"Sounds like you're plotting my demise."
She whirled to find Win standing on the stairs behind her.
Well, fuck. Of course he entered through a window on the second floor.
Caught off guard, she reacted quickly and flung a fireball at him. "Maybe because I am…"

Having a lot of fun with this one. Ember and Win might be keeping big secrets but they know each other very well and that makes this encounter dangerous between them.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Mocking with a Side of Sarcasm

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms, mentors, and mother figures out there! Enjoy the day, and if it's a hard day to celebrate, take care of you.

Another wildly busy work week but a lot of projects moved ahead and some were completed. One contrary work thing took an unexpected turn and I'll be trying to figure that one out later today.

Had a decent week of viewing despite the busy schedule. I made it through a full round of my shows, minus one—Dark Winds—because it's not on the streaming service I have anymore. I think it's on another one, but I've been too busy to track it down.

Started the week off with Brokenwood Mysteries. This one ended up being a lot of fun with a couple of interesting secrets being revealed. Truly hope to see more of Trudy and Ray's mom.

Watched another episode of Death in Paradise and enjoyed the mystery. Really not sure what Neville's DI friend is doing on the island but have a feeling it's not going to mean anything good.

Loved the Beyond Paradise holiday special for this past Christmas. I'm looking forward to diving into the rest of the season when it's available in the US.

Enjoyed another episode of Elementary. Interesting to get some backstory of Sherlock's time under the influence. Also intriguing that he stayed somewhat in the background. I like that kind of character progress.

Watched another episode of Batman Beyond and didn't really have any recollection about this one. I did enjoy seeing Terry use his Batman moves while out of the costume.

Caught another episode of Classic Rugrats and enjoyed both vignettes. I didn't remember either of them so more new-to-me stuff.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Mocking with a Side of Sarcasm, a novella that explores what happens when long-held secrets come to light.

Here's the miniblurb:

Bentley Briggs is snarky on a good day, but when she becomes mocking and throws out a side of sarcasm, Vasek Barrett wants to know why. He discovers a secret Bentley doesn't want him to know and she'll elevate her vitriol to an art form, but it won't keep Vasek from lending a hand.

And a preview snippet…

Bentley entered her parents'—no … her mom and Baron's—house and purposefully let the door slam shut.
Took less than five seconds for her mother to come bustling in. "For goodness' sake. What is your problem, Bentley? You know I don't appreciate it when you shake the house to the rafters when you come in." Exasperation oozed from Mariana's pores.
Bently cut right to the chase. "Why didn't you fight for Teague?" She shrugged out of her jacket and tossed it on the back of the chair, something else her mother hated.
Mariana blinked, opened her mouth then shut it again. She shook her head and turned back toward the study.
Bentley called her mom out. "You don't get to ignore me this time, Mom. Why didn't you fight for the man you loved?" A whole lot rode on her mom's answer.
Mariana whirled around. "Because I didn't love him!" She closed her eyes and exhaled slowly. "More like I couldn't be sure of what I felt for him. And he left before I could figure it out." Moving forward, her shoulder slumped in resignation, she took a seat on the edge of one of her slipper chairs.
Bentley grunted. "Can you blame him?" Defending Teague didn't set completely well with her, but she understood a lot more now than she did before.
Mariana sighed. "It was a confusing time and so long ago. I didn't know how I felt after I found out … well, after I discovered his latent ability. I was angry with him for not telling me." She straightened her shoulders. "He left. At first to give me space. Then I met Baron, and I did fall in love with him. By the time Teague returned, I was planning a wedding." Her face grew wistful.
A fresh splash of rage washed over Bentley. "And let Teague suffer in silence? Way to go, Mom." She paced back and forth. "You get him to sign his parental rights away, have Baron adopt me, then keep everything, everything, from me when you knew all along what might happen." She stopped and flung her hand out. "No wonder I'm so messed up. I can't turn around without smacking into another secret." Probably why she'd become so good at keeping them herself.
Mariana tilted her head and pinned Bentley with a hard glare. "Kind of like you not telling Vasek how you really feel about him?" Her lips curved in a knowing smirk.
Dammit, Baron. I trusted you.
Bentley didn't like the twist. "Gee, Mom, I don't know. Guess I got the worst of my parents instead of the best. Lucky me." The chasm grew even wider between her and her mother.
Mariana clicked her tongue against her teeth. "You know what? Stop it. You've had a very privileged upbringing, and I didn't raise you to act like a spoiled child."
Bentley snorted then went for blood. "You didn't raise me at all. Baron did. The man I thought was my father." She started pacing again. "And it makes so much sense now. You couldn't bear to be around me, because I reminded you of your worst transgression … getting knocked up by someone you considered to be untrustworthy." She stopped mid-step. "Well, guess what, Mom? You won't have to suffer through that anymore. I'm going to fix it for you." She grabbed her coat and headed for the foyer.
Mariana reached out and clasped Bentley's shoulder. "And just how do you plan to do that?" Her fingers dug into Bentley's skin.
Bentley shrugged away from her mother. "Easily. By walking out the door and not letting it hit me in the ass on the way out. Your biggest problem—which has always been me—solved just like that." She snapped her fingers, gave her mother a mocking salute then pulled the door open and strode through, leaving her gaping mother behind.

I love writing Bentley's confrontations. She's a force to be reckoned with and her life is falling apart, but she'll get things back on track.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Loss

Wow, March is being its typical mercurial self. Warm up and then plunge back into the teens and single digits. The back-and-forth weather is normal but not fun.

Crazy-busy week with work projects. I'm thrilled to have my calendar filling up and excited to start some new manuscripts. Also getting more details sorted out for Tip Jar Shorts. I need to find a full day I can dedicate to getting everything where it needs to be.

Very limited viewing this week. My brain decided it needed quiet to focus on the reading I needed to finish up for one of my work projects. I probably needed the break.

I did get more of the One Lane Bridge episode watched. I might take a brief vacation from this one. There's a lot going on in this show and focus is going to be important so I don't miss anything.

Finished up season three of London Kills with the behind-the-scenes bonus episode. I always enjoy getting a deeper look at how everything comes together in a series.

Started another episode of Death in Paradise. I'm about halfway through and I like the tension in this one. Also enjoyed Neville and Commissioner Patterson being on the same page for once.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Loss, a novella that explores how the main characters deal with a devastating blow.

Here's the miniblurb:

Welsh Hollingsworth is the golden child of Clan Grimstone, but when he's expected to fill the void left when his dad is killed, he can't quite figure out how and he hopes Cagney Gaines can help him find some insight. Cagney can't deal with the loss of her mentor, the one constant in her chaotic world and she leaves when Welsh needs her the most. One year later, she returns to find a very different Welsh—one who doesn't welcome her with open arms.

And a preview snippet…

Cagney surveyed the group gathered on the tracks and lining the subway platform. "I've gotta hand it to Welsh. He mobilized the clan in a hurry.'' She met Jacko's gaze. "He's not happy about staying behind." She wouldn't be either if she'd been in his place.
Jacko rolled a shoulder. "Someone needs to call the shots and, like it or not, that's him." He shook his head. "And he needs to be protected. This is a coordinated attack. Taking the old man out? Bold move to get the ball rolling."
Cagney nodded. "Bold but stupid." The one thing Clan Grimstone didn't lack?
Loyalty.
Word of Wallace's death at the hands of Bainbridge spread quickly, and members all but poured out of the woodwork at Hollingsworth House. With communication lines blown, the telepaths were working in a chain to get logistics and movement down and relay orders on. Cagney had met Jacko at the subway terminal and, along with twenty women and thirty men, had a trap set for the Stoneworth clansmen.
The sound of screeching wheels on metal echoed through the tunnel.
Jacko nudged her shoulder. "This should be them. The train is dark." He readied his pouch to give the signal.
The man's bag of tricks never failed to amaze Cagney. Damn good thing he'd arrived at the house in one piece to get the details of Wallace's death. Cagney didn't know if she could have led this battle on her own. Not with—
Guh. She couldn't even think about Wallace not being around when she got back. No way.
Jacko clasped her shoulder with a gnarled hand. "Easy, Cag. I need you here with me." With a gentle squeeze, he let go and readied to launch the counterattack.
Cagney gave him another nod. "On your mark." Shoving aside her grief, she let the anger take control.
When Jacko gave the go, Cagney unleashed her rage and rained hellfire down on the darkened car. Men spilled out on both sides, and Jacko directed the other clansmen in a strategic skirmish that quickly cut the Stoneworth numbers to half. Now, with a fair fight, both groups pulled back on their magick and entered into physical battle mode.
Cagney jumped into the middle of the fray, each blow, kick, punch, and strike chipping away at the tenuous hold on her pain. By the time the Grimstone side had the advantage, rounding up the stragglers of Clan Stoneworth, and she threw her final fist, the tears blurred her vision.
Connecting with her adversary's jaw, she growled. "For Wallace." She let the opponent hit the tracks in a heap of battered flesh.
Jacko made his way to her side. "The old man would be proud of you." He flung an arm around her shoulders. "Let's go see how our new leader fared." He limped forward, a little worse for the skirmish.
Cagney didn't argue, and she appreciated Jacko ignoring the grief overflowing from her eyes. His gaze held a sheen of moisture too. Exhausted and overwhelmed, Cagney didn't stop the stream of tears, letting them run freely. But she'd be dry-eyed when they briefed Welsh—because he would need her to be strong and unbreakable when they got back.
And she would be both even if it killed her.

This one is coming together in so many ways I didn't expect, and I'm excited to see what else unfolds.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Long Time No See

Well, had a better week than the last one. Still not completely tip-top but feeling way better with the worst of the cold finally over. We got more snow this week, but warmer temperatures are around the corner. At least for a few days.

I got caught up on my work projects and lined up a potential new one. I'll be starting a new copy edit on one of my favorite mystery series and continuing my read through on the nonfiction project.

I'm setting up a storefront for Tip Jar Shorts. I'm kind of doing things a bit backward, but the more I thought about it, the more I figured a storefront would lend legitimacy to this endeavor. I wanted to keep things super simple and offer various methods of payment and I might still be able to do that, but I also thought it would be best to have immediate access to a downloadable file instead of waiting on a delivery to an inbox. We'll see which version works out the best.

Had an okay week of viewing. I didn't make a full cycle through of my shows, but I did get the back half watched. And I might be adding one additional show to the roster. I'll let everyone know if that happens.

Watched another episode of Elementary and rather enjoyed this one. Sherlock's dynamic with Joan is different and getting more settled. And Kitty is fitting in with both in ways I didn't expect.

Also caught an episode of Batman Beyond. I remembered this one and enjoyed it. I did forget the interaction with Terry and his brother so that was a nice reminder.

Enjoyed another new-to-me episode of Classic Rugrats. I sometimes wish Nickelodeon had continued with the plans for the pre-school show and added more of All Grown Up. The nostalgia is strong with this franchise. Instead, Spongebob and other weird stuff took off.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Long Time No See, a novella in a yet-to-be-named series.

Here's the miniblurb:

With Jonni on probation with the Marsoni clan and Val estranged from the Janis clan, the couple is forging their own path within the fae realm. The Vellas clan is on the warpath and Jonni receives a tip about who their next target is. She and Val have to decide if they're going to intervene or stay on the sidelines and not get involved, which could have serious ramifications for Val.

And a preview snippet…

Jonni Mars rolled her hips, drawing Val deeper into her core. "Damn, it's good to have you back." She planted her hands on the bed close to his shoulders, her fingers curling into her palms.
Val hissed out a breath. "Good to be back. Didn't enjoy tending to clan business, especially when I walked away for a reason." His head lifted and his lips latched on to her nipple.
Her eyes slid shut, pleasure spiraling through her. Val never failed to give her exactly what she needed to amp up the zinging awareness coursing along her nerve endings. He'd been cloistered with the Janis clan for two weeks, out of touch and unreachable. She started climbing the walls by day three because they'd spent nearly every day together for the last six months.
Being on probation sucked. She didn't realize how much space Val filled in her life … or how much of a distraction he provided, easing the huge void she'd landed in by being stuck on the sidelines. She couldn't even patrol without permission right now.
Val's lips traveled up to her shoulder. "Missed you." He nuzzled her collarbone.
Jonni changed the pace, slowing down and moving sensuously over the hard length buried deep inside her. "Yeah, same." Her head lowered and she met his lips.
Val slipped his tongue past her teeth to tangle with hers. His hips rose in counterpoint with her smooth rocking motion. Jonni slid closer to the edge of bliss. When Val skimmed his palms along her torso and around to cup her ass, he applied pressure to hold her in place. His groin bumped the hard nub of nerves, creating just the right amount of friction to send her over.
She broke the kiss on a gasp. "Ah, yes." A shiver rippled over her, and she came, her inner muscles gripping hard on his cock.
Val groaned. "So hot. Love to watch you lose control." He thrust upward two more times and shuddered under her.
Jonni collapsed atop his chest, her breath coming out in short bursts. Val wrapped his arms around her, his fingers drawing lazy circles on her skin. She loved basking in the afterglow with him.
The chirp of a phone broke the moment.
Her head popped up. "Yours or mine?" She glanced toward the nightstand beside the bed.
His phone screen stayed dark.
She sighed. "Ugh. It's mine." Sitting up, she leaned over and fished her device out of her pocket and swiped to answer, not bothering to check the ID. "Hello." The voice on the other end made her shoulders tense. "Yeah, okay. I'll be there in fifteen minutes."
Val's eyebrows arched. "Everything okay?"
Jonni shook her head. "Probably not. But I've got a meeting I can't miss."

I've just starting really writing this one and I can't wait to dive in and see where things go.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Left Unsaid

Happy Kendrick Lamar Does the Halftime Show to all who celebrate. I'll be feasting on food that's terrible for me because that's my favorite part of this weekend.

I'm still doing small things for Tip Jar Shorts. I'm trying to get my other blogs and my author website updated with the new material and I'm looking at possible setting up immediate downloads. That's a goal and I hope I can get there. Trying to gauge interest first. I also kept up with drawing one oracle card a day and posting the results on Bluesky.

Had a fairly busy work week. I finished up a copy edit and completed a combination copy edit proofread. I also had a terrific meeting with a new client, and I'll be working on evaluating their manuscript over the next few weeks. Very exciting!

Slow week for viewing. I had a lot of distractions and couldn't focus on watching very much. I think lack of sleep played a role there. I'm trying to figure out what kind of sleep schedule I need right now.

I did get a few shows in, starting with Elementary, which ended up being a really great episode and I enjoyed it.

Also caught an episode of Batman Beyond. I'm very nostalgic for this show right now and thoroughly enjoying the rewatch.

Watched another episode of Classic Rugrats. Again, the two vignettes were new to me. Although, I think they were out of order with the rest of the season because one showed how Chas and Kira ended up with the coffee shop.

I started an episode of One Lane Bridge and should finish it up today. This show has some twists, and I enjoy those but also need to be able to focus so I don't miss important details.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Left Unsaid, a novella that explores different methods of communication when speaking doesn't help.

Here's the miniblurb:

Haven and Pryce are involved in a covert war between humanity and the fae. When the battle takes a nasty turn for the worse and their lives are in danger multiple times, the couple realize it's sometimes better to communicate without words.

And a preview snippet…

Haven had no doubt what Pryce wanted. "His pound of flesh." Talking might come later, but right now, he needed an outlet, one she'd happily provide.
She filled out a hastily worded report and dropped it off at the makeshift command center. She showered and called in to central communications. "Hey, Ross. I'm gonna need a twelve-hour window. No calls. No disturbances. Complete radio silence." She wrapped a towel around torso. "And include Pryce. If anyone asks, consider it lost time. He hasn't had a chance to work through his brother's death yet." She chewed on her lip. "And he needs it." Because of the role I played.
Ross made a rude sound. "And you're what? Babysitting?"
She bit her response out. "Something like that." She waited a beat. "And you can stop being a dick. You took three days when Maria died." She didn't begrudge anyone their grief, but she'd be damned if Ross would pull that shit.
He responded with a contrite tone. "Yeah, you're right. As of right now, your clock is ticking."
Haven hoped it would be enough. "Thanks." She hung up and considered getting dressed. "Why bother? That's not what this is about." She exited her quarters and crossed the hall.
She didn't bother with a knock. Instead, she let herself into Pryce's space, shutting the rest of the world out. Like her, Pryce only had a towel slung low around his hips. Dropping all pretense, she let hers fall to the floor, indicating the next move belonged to him.
A flash of lust tinged with anger lit his gaze, sending a jolt of heat through her. Pryce didn't hesitate, he strode toward her, the damp terrycloth lost on the way. Wedging his thigh between her legs, he backed her up against the wall. Haven welcomed the hair-roughened skin against her clit, another zing of hot desire threading through her nerve endings.
He caught her chin in one hand and slanted his lips over hers. His tongue thrust deeply and Haven responded with a low moan. His aggression inflamed her need, but she kept a tight leash on her desire. This is Pryce's moment. Pryce worked his free hand between them to find her slick and ready.
He broke the kiss, his stare drilling into her. "You're wet. You want this…"
Haven held his gaze. "I want you, Pryce. No matter what." She rocked her hips and grasped his erection. "In any way you want." Always.
His eyes darkened. "You might live to regret that, Haven. I'm really pissed right now." His words came out on a growl.
She lifted her chin. "I know. But I'm still here. And I'm not going anywhere." Unless he kicked her out.

This story is coming together is a way I didn't expect, but I'm thrilled with how things are going.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!
