Sunday Snippet: One of These Things

Geez, August has been a brutal month. The last week in particular. Not sure why, but I struggled hard, couldn't stay focused, and generally feel like I didn't get anything accomplished. Bleh.

Weirdly, the weather has been amazing. We need rain in a big way, but the temperatures were mild, which is a blessing. Actually had to break out a jacket and leggings because it got chilly at night.

Work projects are in a weird state of flux. I have a lot on my plate, and I hopped around multiple projects because of the aforementioned struggle to stay focused. I really hope I can get back on task this week.

I didn't get to watch the season two opener of Reacher, but I did make it through most of my regular shows. The first week of September is a chaos monster so I'm not sure if I'll get to make it through my regular slate of shows. Fingers crossed.

I did start the week with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and enjoyed the rewatch. Always fun when Phryne and company go on trips.

Caught another episode of Madame Blanc Mysteries. I liked the mystery and my heart broke for Dom and Jean. But Jean was spot on with telling Dom he might not be ready to be a couple.

Watched the opening to season fourteen Death in Paradise. Still not sure if I'm down with the new guy. He might grow on me, and I do like how Naomi and Darlene hold their own with him.

Enjoyed another episode of Poirot. Very fun to see him solve the mystery while not leaving his apartment. And I do think he quite loves to put Hastings in horribly embarrassing positions.

Caught another episode of Elementary. I really like it when Joan and Sherlock team up to help their extended group. Detective Bell's dilemma being resolved ended up being a lot of fun.

Watched another episode of Batman Beyond. I didn't fully remember this one, so I enjoyed getting reacquainted with it.

The episode of Lower Decks I watched is hopefully a turning point. Mariner makes me absolutely bonkers, which I'm pretty sure is the whole point. Here's hoping she can dial it back about ten clicks and I can finally settle in and like the character.

I did almost make it through an episode of Peak Practice that I started a couple of weeks ago. Sam is headed for a very bad place, which makes sense since his run is almost finished. Hoping to get the rest of the episode watched this week.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from One of These Things, a novella that puts a spin on the ugly duckling story.

Here's the miniblurb:

Tanis Watts comes of age in the human world but discovers she has fae abilities. When she's caught between warring factions, she falls in with the wrong side and barely escapes with her life. Seeking sanctuary, she lands on Falco Corsair's doorstep and runs headfirst into her destiny.

And a preview snippet…

Tanis remained silent until her rescuer led her through a hidden access point in the main wall of the estate. "Now that we're clear, let me thank you and suggest you get as far away from here as possible." She glanced over her shoulder. "Do you have any idea how big the steaming pile is you just stepped in?" Especially for saving her.
The guy gave a terse nod. "I was you five years ago, so yeah, I've got a pretty solid picture of the shitstorm I've unleashed." He nodded toward the card she still held clasped between her fingers. "Go to Innispoint. They'll grant sanctuary." He shrugged. "At least they did for me."
Tanis turned the small rectangle over in her hand. "You're a member of the White then?" The Light Keepers—counterpoint to the Dark Guard—kept a residence at Innispoint.
The man snorted. "Not likely. As a midliner, I'm neutral. But when I got rescued, I made a promise to help whenever I got the call." He met her gaze. "I got the call for you."
Tanis frowned. "Who contacted you?" She didn't know many of the White brethren, and definitely no one who would care if she lived or died.
The guy huffed out a breath. "Just a voice on the phone. That's it." He turned and started to make his way through a thicket of underbrush.
Tanis scrambled to catch up. "Look, I appreciate the help, but I'm serious when I say you need to lay low. Better yet, take a vacation somewhere that isn't here."
The man grunted. "Yeah, I'll think about it."
Tanis hesitated a moment. "What's your name?" Maybe that would give her a clue about who wanted her alive.
His eyes narrowed a little. "Brevan Hollis. And no offense, but I hope you'll forget you ever saw me." He lifted his chin and darted forward, pulling brambles and briars in his wake.
Tanis tucked the card into her pocket. "Thanks again, Brevan. Here's hoping I don't find your name in the death herald anytime soon." She ducked low and carefully made her way toward the river.
From there she'd pick up the path that led to Innispoint and hopefully get some answers.
"Why would anyone from the White save me?"

I'm pleased with how this story is coming together. Tanis is not going to be thrilled when she discovers why she's been saved.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: One of These Things

It's been a crazy week. Our county had severe flash flooding in the far eastern end and many of the people affected are still trying to dry out. Then there was a terrible barn fire that took three teenagers, most a little younger than my daughter. And to top it off, a beloved coach and teacher lost his battle with cancer. So… yeah. Rough and crazy week. Also… it can quit raining whenever it wants to.

A little light on television fare, but I did get some shows watched. Caught an episode of Durham County and, honestly, it's insane how dark this show goes. Not in a bad way either. But it's super-twisted and seriously messy. I can't wait to see how Ray Prager, Sr. tries to keep the upper hand he gained this week. I also can't wait to see him go down really hard. Please make that happen.

Midsomer Murders had a great episode featuring astronomy. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery and figuring out the why and how.

Watched two more episodes each of Peter Gunn and Classic Who. I'm nearing the end of the first doctor's tenure and should be starting Two's in the near future.

Caught another episode of Painkiller Jane and enjoyed it. I like the episode the first time around because it opened up some questions about whether all neuros really needed to be chipped. I think this show was a little ahead of its time.

Blade had a decent episode where Krista needed to detox and Blade had to find a serial killer vampire. Not a bad hour's worth or so of entertainment.

Started another episode of Blue Heelers. I'm still enjoying this Aussie drama.

Watched another episode of Banshee. It took me three days to get through the entire episode due to several interruptions and a number of work deadlines. But I loved this one from the original watch and didn't want to miss anything.

Caught Chicago Fire penultimate episode of season seven. Excellent showing. I kind of love where all the characters are right now… which means they'll all be upended in the finale. LOL

Started Daredevil's third episode of season three. I'm really liking this final season. I'm so disappointed with all the consolidation and shifting of assets and how it affects terrific television. I'm not a huge Disney fan because they keep snapping everything up.

That's pretty much it for television this week. Tonight's post is from One of These Things, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt about recreating fairy tales.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Tanis Watts comes of age in the human world, but discovers she has fae abilities. When she's caught between warring factions, she falls in with the wrong side and barely escapes with her life. Seeking sanctuary, she lands on Falco Corsair's doorstep and runs headfirst into her destiny.

And a preview snippet…

Brevan Hollis shook like a leaf but he'd promised to help whenever he got a call. "Didn't know I'd be going back to the hell pit I escaped from." Being a mid-liner—a fae who didn't have allegiance to either the Black or the White—put him in a position to be useful to both sides.
But someone from the White had saved his sorry ass when the dark priest wanted to make Brevan a sacrificial example five years ago. Middle liners had at least one human parent and weren't supposed to be recruited by the fae councils. Some long ago treaty gave the half-faes freedom from swearing fealty to either sect.
Something the high priest conveniently forgot when it suited him.
Brevan's steps slowed when he came to the small stone building. A shot-gun styled interior with a short hallway and four tiny rooms on either side and a larger single room in the back, the makeshift jail held only one prisoner.
Tannis Watts.
Brevan didn't have a clue what she looked like or what condition she'd be in. The call didn't have those kinds of specifics, only the location and the urgent need to get Tannis to safety. He'd come semi-prepared with a small medical kit and a bag of charms and crystals. Both were tucked inside his jacket, just in case.
Slipping through the gate in the front yard, he stooped down and crept quietly toward the house. No guards were posted outside, which actually helped and hindered his quest. He could enter through the front door, but opted to go around back in case someone acted as a sentry inside.
Angling toward the rear entrance, he squinted through the window. "Unless something major has changed in the five years, I'll have a better view to the front." Sure enough, the large space that once used to be a kitchen and dining area gave him a straight view to the front of the building. No one stood inside.
Brevan used his quick and nimble fingers to get through the lock. He carefully opened the door and eased inside the house. Now, he only had to figure out which room Tannis would occupy.
Taking a step forward, he listened for any sound that would give him a clue. "Rather not have to pick every lock in the place." He stopped by the first door and pressed his ear against it.
Nothing. No creaking floorboards, no rustling, not a peep.
He crossed the hall and listened at the neighboring door.
Same thing. Not a sound.
Biting back a sigh, he moved to the next room. "It's after midnight, dumbass. She's probably sleeping." Might as well finish the rounds and try the next door.
He leaned against the heavy oak, trying to detect any kind of movement. He almost fell on his face when the door jerked open and he stumbled into the darkened space. A hand caught him under his chin, squeezing his throat then pushed him up against the wall.
Dim moonlight illuminated a beautiful female face marred only by the slash of her angry mouth.
Her fingers clamped tighter around his neck. "Full moon's not until tomorrow. Why are you here?"
He tried to swallow but couldn't get his throat to work. "T-t-tannis W-ww-watts?" He resisted the desire to claw at her hand even though he couldn't breathe.
She narrowed her eyes. "Why. Are. You. Here?"
When he couldn't do more than choke out a garbled response, she finally relented and loosened her grip on his airway. He dragged several lungsful of air into his chest and cleared his throat.
He glanced down to his jacket. "Inside the pocket." He hoped she'd retrieve the card otherwise he might not make it out alive.
She reached in with her free hand then read the name and address before slowly letting him go.
Brevan gave her the same introduction he'd received five years ago. "If you don't want to die, I can get you out. The choice is yours."
She pinned him with a clear gaze, searching his face for any sign of imminent betrayal. Brevan didn't flinch or look away even though her scrutiny unnerved him. They needed to get going if she wanted to escape. The building would be on a regular patrol route since it didn't have guards.
Tannis relaxed her posture and nodded. "Let's go."

I hope this story turns out the way I see things in my head. It's fun to write the conflict between dark and light and how those who aren't on either side have to play carefully to not get in the way.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: One of These Things

Well… it's kind of fitting the finale for The Last Ship is on the anniversary of 9/11. I have no doubt the end of season three will blow my mind. The previous episode has so much packed into it. Chandler knows what's happening on US soil. And it's not what he expected. The Greens were FINALLY reunited. If Blonde Ambition tries to do anything to their kid, I'm going to reach through the television and bitch slap her. Just saying. Pretty sure she'll focus on Chandler's family instead. Which means I'll still want to bitch slap her. LOL

I missed the double header of Dark Matter so I'll be playing catch up this week. I hope. I've got a crazy schedule through the end of the month so who knows.

No time to work on recaps of Killjoys season one. Maybe next week. I did get to watch a few episodes of Strike Back and should finish out season two soon. Might have to add recaps for this one to my list also. There's so much to love.

That's it for now. Should have few new shows to chat about soon.

Tonight's post is from One of These Things, a bit of a riff on The Ugly Duckling with a paranormal flair.

Falco went for his usual run, leaving at dawn to make the rounds of the estate's perimeter. Once he completed the circuit, he left the grounds through the wooden gate and ambled along the winding path to the High Cleric's abode. When he knocked, she greeted him in the nude per their custom, and drew him into her warm arms and home.
After her embrace, she stepped back. "Welcome, Falco. I have the bathing chamber ready and waiting for you." Her fingers worked the zipper of his hooded sweatshirt down and her palms slid the garment from his shoulders.
Her touch soothed and aroused him, by design. "I look forward to the mineral waters, Calia." And more, since she'd worked her wiles.
Calia's lips curved and her hands pushed his workout pants past his hips, letting his erection spring free. "Mmm. That's not all you're looking forward to." She grasped his cock and let him through her small cottage to the outside atrium where a mineral spring fed the bathing pool.
She eased into the water, letting go of his shaft, and gathered a large pitcher to fill with the enriched liquid. Falco entered the pool, pausing to allow Calia to douse him with the steaming shower of mineral spirits. She repeated the process until Falco lifted a hand for her to halt.
Setting the pitcher aside, Calia made an appreciative hum. "Falco, I want my reward." She glided around him, her body cutting sensual swirls into the glistening water.
He caught her under the arms, hauling her close. "Then come and take, Calia. You know I won't deny you the life force you seek." His mouth slanted over hers and he freely gave her a burst of chi.
She moaned against his lips, drawing the energy deep within her. A sexual being by nature, when Calia accepted the role of High Cleric, she made a vow to deny her carnal urges, including seduction and siren calling—unless the male willingly participated. Falco couldn't absolve her from the promise she'd made to move up through the ranks, but he could ease her path by letting her feed on his base desires.
Calia wrapped her legs around his waist and he cupped her ass, bringing her hot center flush with his hard cock.
Falco slid one hand up to tangle in her hair. "Use me, Calia. Take what you need." His mouth ghosted over her jawline. "The next two hours belong to you."
She'd use every one of the one hundred and twenty minutes. Falco only had time to visit the cleric twice a month. As far as he knew, she didn't have anyone else who trusted her enough to give of themselves freely. Too many worried Calia would roam around in their deeper thoughts and discover their greatest fears and weaknesses.
Falco welcomed the intrusion. He sought guidance and control of his destiny. When Calia slaked her hunger, she'd reveal what she found in his psyche.
His instincts warned a wave of change would soon throw the White into disarray.
And Falco planned to get out ahead of the barrage.

I'm excited to see where this one goes. It's got some twists and turns.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: One of These Things

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers and father figures out there!

So… Orphan Black is almost over for this season and *eep* I still have way more questions than answers. That said, I don't care. I love everything about this season. Although, I guess I should ask if it's really wrong I pretty much cheered on Helena throughout last night's entire episode? No? Good. And Donnie and Alison. Twisted and creepy, but holy shit, I laughed, even though I shouldn't have. :D

Tonight's post is from One of These Things, a novella where my main character learns she's very different from the people who raised her.

Here's the tagline:

Tanis Watts comes of age in the human world, but discovers she has fae abilities. When she's caught between warring factions, she falls in with the wrong side and barely escapes with her life. Seeking sanctuary, she lands on Falco Corsair's doorstep and runs headfirst into her destiny.

And a preview snippet…

"If you're going to become a full member of the Black, you must sacrifice this life."
Tanis Watts met the gaze of the Dark Priest, but held silent. She understood her next move would seal her fate and indecision waged an internal battle in her mind. Tanis didn't have the driving need for bloodlust her fellow Black brethren did, even though the desire for acceptance weighed heavily in her heart. The Guard had taken her in, given her a place to live, but after some serious soul searching, she couldn't bring herself to kill for the sake of killing. She didn't believe a sacrifice should cost anyone their life.
Glancing downward, she spoke with conviction. "The Guard has been good to me, like family, and I appreciate it." She paused a moment. "But I won't take his life."
The Dark Priest frowned. "You know what this means, Tanis. Are you certain?"
She gave a jerky nod. "I am."
The priest raised an arm and three acolytes seized her, not that she put up a struggle. Why fight? She couldn't escape, had nowhere to run if she did. Her gaze met the Dark Priest's again and he stared, unflinchingly, before casually drawing his blade and slicing the throat of her intended sacrifice.
Bile rose in her esophagus, but she showed no outward sign. The priest's minions changed the death song and bowed their heads. Once complete, they hustled Tanis toward the exit.
The Dark Priest called out. "Your life is forfeit Tanis Watts. In three days, on the high moon, you will cease to live."
Tanis closed her eyes, letting the acolytes lead her through the maze of tunnels under the estate house, back up to the surface of the main grounds. The image of the poor victim sharpened into focus in her mind. Three days, and then she'd be cast in the same role.
Sacrifice.
I had a dream about this scene. Doesn't happen very often, but it's nice when it does, even when it's kind of dark like this. J

That's it for this week.

Cheers!
