Sunday Snippet: Muddy Up the Waters

It's a long weekend in the US for the Memorial Day holiday and also graduation weekend for our local high school. Seems like a great time to have lovely weather, right? It's Ohio so the answer would be probably not. It's cloudy with a chance of rain. But at least the temperature is in the high sixties instead of the low fifties, which is more like March instead of May.

I'm making headway on the multiple work projects. Two have shifted off my plate for the next step in the publishing process and the other six are coming along. I should have at least two more finished up this week. YAY!

Had a pretty solid week of viewing. I did make it through my regular slate of shows and got started on my two new ones. Or, one new one and one that always seems to simmer on the back burner.

Enjoyed another episode in my rewatch of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. The first couple of episodes do such a great job of setting up the dynamic between the characters and I thoroughly enjoy the actors so much.

Watched another episode of Death in Paradise and like how awkward things are between Selwyn and his daughter. I also kind of enjoy Katherine being in his face but I also think she kind of oversteps sometimes.

Caught another episode of Poirot and enjoyed it. I often feel like the relationship between Poirot and Japp is shortchanged because we don't really see how that started, but the interactions are fun.

Enjoyed another Brokenwood Mysteries. Kind of weird but awesome the victim is someone we met in an earlier episode. And the mystery took some wild turns, which is always fun.

Watched another episode of Elementary and loved the interactions with Joan and Sherlock. The ice cream touch at the end is perfection.

Caught an episode of Batman Beyond and it's one I don't really remember much of but also one that I quite enjoyed. There's nothing like a storyline where a character is trapped in a computer and wants to escape to the real world. It's a weird trope that I love.

Enjoyed another episode of Classic Rugrats. The two vignettes are ones that were new to me, and I liked both. Weird bit with some out of order information as the Finsters were still calling their dog puppy instead of Pepper.

Watched another episode of Return to Paradise and I'm still enjoying this one. I'm very interested in seeing what happens with Mackenzie and her ex-fiancé. There's a lot of good potential to be very messy with this situation.

I got started on a new episode of Peak Practice but didn't make it all the way through. I'll try to finish it up this week.

Also started a new episode of Reacher, but paused because I need to pay attention and couldn't focus like I wanted to. I'll definitely finish this one up this week.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Muddy Up the Waters, a novella that reunites a couple after three years to see if they can work out their issues.

Here's the miniblurb:

Fiona and Warrick can't quite get their timing together long enough to be on the same page when it comes to making a commitment. Instead they expend their energy on playing a game of who can hurt who the most … until one decides enough is enough.

And a preview snippet…

Fiona attempted a smooth landing but failed on an epic level. Instead of gliding into Warrick's place, she crash-landed in a heap in the middle of his first floor living space.
And found him hot and heavy with a blonde, her legs wrapped around Warrick's waist, up against a wall with him driving into her. That'll teach me to show up unannounced. She ignored the rising bile in her throat and ruthlessly tamped down the hot burn of jealousy thrumming through her veins. She had zero claim on the council head.
Warrick's head snapped around at the disturbance. "What the hell are you doing here?" He used his shoulders to block her view of his … bedmate?
Or maybe life partner?
Again, she swallowed down the nasty taste in her mouth. "Excuse me? You demanded my immediate presence." Gathering her broom, she tucked it under her arm and got to her feet. "So … here I am." With a snort, she added, "Next time, consider giving a specific time when issuing orders … if only to avoid anything like this happening again." She sent her best innocent look his way.
Warrick's nostrils flared. "Whatever. Since you're here, go wait upstairs in the solarium." He tilted his head toward the woman. "I'm a little busy at the moment."
Fiona rolled her eyes. "Ten minutes. Then I leave the way I came." She stomped over to the stairs and clomped each step until she reached the top.
The solarium beckoned her at the end of the hall. She'd loved this room … before Warrick accepted the position as head of council. Before he lived here and called this space his own.
She wondered how many changes he'd made. Her hand stilled over the knob and trembled a little. Facing the past she'd wrecked and walked away from didn't give her any kind of right to be disappointed.
Sucking in a deep breath, she twisted the handle and pushed the door open.
Soft light from several sconces greeted her when she entered. The three walls and partial ceiling of windows opened the space up to nightfall outside. The slipping sun of burnished orange dipped below the tree line. Her feet moved across the polished wood floor, through the mix of plants and tables and shelves lined with books, bottles, and baubles steeped with the history of the glade.
She came to a stop beside the wingback chair Upton Morse used to occupy. The previous head of council left a huge empty spot when he succumbed to his injuries from a battle with a long illness. She still missed him … even if she no longer called the glade home.
Continuing forward, she gazed through the expanse of glass with memories shifting in her mind not unlike the sway of the shadowy treetops dancing in the twilight. Warmth cascaded over her … the familiar surroundings creating a warm glow that sparked to life in her heart and soul. She had no illusions about Warrick leaving the space untouched for her. But she appreciated the lack of change anyway.
Exhaling on a sigh, she closed her eyes. "I've missed this place so much…"
"It's not like it went anywhere. You would be the one who did that."
Squaring her shoulders, Fiona braced for a battle and turned to face Warrick—fresh from a shower if the damp hair and unbuttoned shirt were indicators. "Why am I here, Warrick?"

I'm not completely sure where things are going with this one, but Fiona and Warrick are going to crash into something that will make them work together and I can't wait to write that for them.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Mister Mysterious

May the Fourth be with anyone who celebrates! And, wow, a shiny new month that's off to a wild start so far. Our weather has been crazy intense with loads of rain. My daughter graduated with a master's in arts administration, and I unfortunately had to miss due to being under the weather. But I'm so proud of her!

Work projects kept me very busy. I'm getting to a finishing point on one that's been difficult to get through and I have a new one getting ready to start. The weather has been wreaking havoc on productivity because the possibility of losing power is a constant concern.

I did have a decent week of viewing and made a full run through my regular slate of shows. I started a movie but didn't have time to finish it.

I caught an episode of Dark Winds and I'm still intrigued by everything that's happening in this show. I love that the FBI agent's cover is blown by episode two and I can't wait to see what happens with the fallout from that.

Also watched another episode of Brokenwood Mysteries. This is truly one of my happy place shows. I'm rather curious about whether Gina is still rooming with Kristin or not and if not, what happened there.

Enjoyed another episode of Death in Paradise. Very curious where things might go with the Sophie and Neville thing and also where the whole last prepper standing thing will end up going since he's watching Neville.

Loved the season two finale of Beyond Paradise. Humphrey and Martha are so much fun, and the surrounding cast of characters is so good. I'm not always sure about Anne, but she's growing on me.

Caught another episode of Elementary and rather enjoyed Sherlock's attempt at taking care of Joan. And her solution to having her own space is genius.

Watched an episode of Batman Beyond with the beginning of season two. Ended up remembering most of this one. This is such a good follow up to the original series.

Enjoyed another episode of Classic Rugrats. I have some vague memories of both vignettes, which is so weird because most of the ninth season is new to me.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Mister Mysterious, a novella that gives a couple a second change to right an old wrong.

Here's the miniblurb:

Marlow Spence loses her sister to a sinister spellbinder who believes the siblings have the power to control dreams. When Tharn Oliver shows up on her doorstep, there can be only one reason—Leo Tolstoy is back and he wants Marlow.

And a preview snippet…

After tossing and turning for an hour, Tharn spent a sleepless night studying the cluster of gifts Marlow had received. "Better than strolling down memory lane…" Which would not end well with her in such close proximity.
Stop thinking with your dick, dumbass.
Right. Because that would not happen. They had their chance and acting on their attraction stole the future from them.
He clenched his fist. "Not this time." Tolstoy wouldn't get the chance to ruin Marlow's hard-won recovery.
Even if she existed in solitude never letting anyone get too close.
Not that he blamed her. And he respected the fact she continued to work and carve out a life for herself … even if she had to be lonely. The conscious choice she'd made worked for her.
He leaned his head on the back of the couch. "Wish I could say the same." But he really couldn't.
He moved through life always reaching for something that eluded him. The thing he almost had the night Charlotte died. A contentment lasting in a small window of time before his future ended up dashed and dead against a rocky cliff.
Because even after so much time had passed … and especially after coming here tonight … he finally figured out what his life had been missing.
"Marlow's it for me." No one else could fill the void in his heart.
Seeing her brought the wild attraction back, but in a way tempered by the events of that night. All that transpired since then added depth to the longing for what could have been. And served as a stark contrast to the reality he lived.
"Is she really happy? Or is she marking time like I am?"
The answer to that question might prove to be as elusive as what he truly wanted …
Her love.
She would hate having him in her space … a constant reminder of what she lost. But he wouldn't walk away … not yet. When she no longer had to look over her shoulder, he'd get out of her way, and she could live her life…
Without him.

This is such a moody manuscript and I kind of love it. Tharn and Marlow have a road they have to travel together and it's fun writing their journey.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Led Astray

Welcome February! The shortest month seems like a great time to start new things. I've challenged myself to post every day on Bluesky and I picked drawing one oracle card from a random deck each day. So far, I'm two for two.

I'm also going to launch the side project I've previously talked about. Tip Jar Shorts is a fun way to get sexy romance short stories right to your inbox. The blog is up and running and still a work in progress. I'm so excited to see how things go! If you're interested, check it out!

I had a busy work week with a challenging copy edit but it's almost complete and I'm happy I got to work on this mystery series. A few more bits and pieces to check and it'll be on its way to the publisher.

Had a somewhat quiet viewing week. Between getting Tip Jar finished up and the copy edit, I needed a quiet background to get everything done.

Caught another Batman Beyond episode. I remembered this one and enjoyed during my first run through of the show.

Enjoyed an episode of Classic Rugrats. I'm in the final season and catching some episodes I haven't seen before.

Watched another episode of One Lane Bridge and I'm still enjoying the show. It's kind of a slow, moody narrative and I'm rather into that right now.

Caught another episode of London Kills and I'm kind of wondering what the hell is going to happen next. I'm also wondering what the superintendent thought would happen when he tried to run.

Enjoyed another episode of Death in Paradise. The vibe is very different with season eleven and I'm kind of okay with that. I like the new sergeant and I'm looking forward to seeing where things go with Florance doing an undercover stint. I like that the reason is tied back to a previous murder.

Loved the episode of Beyond Paradise that I caught this week. I'm interested in how Humphrey and Martha work through their issues and was so happy to see her rebuff Archie, even if he's portrayed by one of my favorite actors. I'm still on the fence with Martha's mom. I can't quite decide if I like her or not. We'll see how the rest of the season goes.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Led Astray, a novella that brings a couple together even if they're not supposed to fall for each other.

Here's the miniblurb:

Gia Schmidt is tasked with bringing Orrick Triolo around to her clan's way of thinking, but he proves a hard case to crack, even with her considerable skills. Orrick's got something she wants but if she's not careful, he'll lead her astray instead of the other way around.

And a preview snippet…

Gia toyed with her food. "If you want to avoid a war—and you should—agreeing to a summit between all the clans is a good idea." Gia ended on a sigh.
At least Orrick listened to her spiel without comment. She could break the entire list of possibilities down into minute detail but wouldn't waste her breath. Not unless he gave her a positive sign. He signaled for a refill of coffee. Gia resisted the urge to kick him under the table.
Finally, he took a slow sip of the hot brew then met her gaze. "Why come to me? The elder triad of Triolos holds the power in our family. They're the ones you should be talking to."
Gia huffed out a breath. "Do you know how many have tried to get meetings with them—even one?"
Orrick lifted a shoulder. "Not really, no."
Gia leaned in. "Every single clan has tried alone. And together. And every time they're ignored or rebuffed. Threats have been made if anyone outside tries again."
Orrick blinked. "Why? What do you think I can do?"
Gia shrugged. "Ask them to see reason. The Triolos have a lot of power. They're tired of warring factions. But the grab for complete control isn't playing out the way they want. Instead of giving them what they desire, the move has united the clans against them."
Orrick arched a brow. "You don't think we'll win?"
Gia bit back another sigh. "I don't know. You might. But the toll in lives and lost resources will cost all of us."
Orrick tilted his head to one side. "That's a good point … and a possible opening."
Gia nudged the spark of hope aside. "So … you'll make the pitch?"
Orrick lifted a chin. "I'll consider it, yes."
The flame flickered. Happy about the response, she let a small smile curve her lips. Maybe things would end up working out.
Orrick took some wind out of her sails with a disclaimer. "I'll need some time to find the right approach."
Gia slumped. "How much?" Her grandfather lacked patience on a good day.
Orrick held her gaze. "I'm not sure. Let's maybe meet for dinner in a few days and I should have a better idea."
She agreed. What else could she do?
And she didn't hate the idea of seeing him again.

I'm having fun with the cat and mouse aspect of this story and the characters are stepping up in big ways to help move the plot along.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Jigsaw Pieces

I'm still working on getting my side project ready to go. At this point, I have no idea how long it will last but I'm going to go like gangbusters until I can't anymore.

Had a solid week of work. Finished up a copy edit and started a new one. Also worked on a developmental edit that's been simmering on the back burner. I have three projects lined up and I'm waiting on deposits to get rolling on those. Hopefully, December is going to be a steady month of work.

Had a very good week of viewing. I made it through my usual round of shows and started looking for a former fave to rewatch but it's not readily available. Might have to dig out my ripped DVDs and hunt around for one of my old players.

I caught two episodes of The Batman this week. No Justice League cameos in these two. Strictly Robin and Batgirl, which I enjoyed.

Also watched two episodes of Classic Rugrats. Both were single episodes instead of the standard two or three vignettes. Preschool and Halloween featured and were a lot of fun to watch.

Enjoyed another episode of Mr. and Mrs. Murder. I'd seen most of this one and liked it the first time around. Very fun to get some background on the detective.

Finished out the first season of London Kills with an episode-length behind the scenes look at the series. Lots of fun to see the actors talk about their characters and see how the showrunners also make the city of London a character.

Caught another episode of Death in Paradise. I liked the mystery in this one and enjoyed the crab cooking contest. Not completely sold on Marlon as the new police officer but I'll probably end up enjoying him.

Finished up the second half of Silent Witness and, boy, there were a lot of twists in this one. Really loved Jack declaring his love for Nikki at the end. So nice to see them have a happy moment.

Watched an episode of Elementary and rather enjoyed it. Of course, it ended on a cliffhanger, and I have no doubt Mycroft is involved in something nefarious. I truly hope involving Joan blows up in his face.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Jigsaw Pieces, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the miniblurb:

On a seemingly routine patrol, Nev Walter watched his partner and sometimes lover, Thea Chavis, burn in hellfire. Broken and unsure how to carry on, he dives back into work for the department of preternatural law enforcement where he runs a unit of officers. Unable to stop thinking about Thea, Nev takes a sharp turn for the worse when dreams of her invade his nights and memories linger during the day. When he starts seeing her in ethereal visions, he decides he's cracking up … but all isn't as it seems.

And a preview snippet…

Thea Chavis ducked through the arched gate leading to Thurston Woods. "I don't care what Nev says, this area needs a look." She stayed on the well-worn walking path and kept her eyes open.
Her partner in the department of preternatural law enforcement for the Greater Abernathy area, Nev Walter, would be pissed she ignored his warning. But … she didn't care at the moment. Because Nev also partnered with her off the job.
Usually.
She snorted. "Lately, not so much." Nev captained a team of eight and often played the role of mom, dad, and great confessor.
Sometimes all at once.
Stepping off the path, Thea entered a thicket of low bushes. The brambles and briars caught at her pantlegs, but she pushed through. Kind of how she clawed through the latest argument with Nev. He didn't want her patrolling alone.
Thea clicked her tongue against her teeth. "As if I'm incapable of staying aware and protected." Sometimes his lack of trust in her ability pissed her off.
Like tonight. The department had reports of fire flashes deep in the center of Thruston Woods. An extended drought made any kind of burning dangerous. The entire forest could go up in flames. The area needed to be checked out.
But Nev had other things to do. Like babysit two of their fellow officers that couldn't seem to keep their shit together. And he wanted Thea to cool her heels while he straightened out whatever issues Blaney and Morgan couldn't seem to handle themselves.
Thea rolled her eyes. "Maybe they should just spend a weekend together and get all that sexual tension out of the way." Worked for me and Nev.
Sort of.
Finally reaching a copse of dense trees, Thea weaved through the ancient timber, slowly working her way toward the center of the woodland area. Questions pinged in her mind. Were the flames from ritual fires? She could suggest an alternative place to conduct rites involving smoke, fire, or ashes.
Or … did something darker come into play here? Could someone be trying to damage the sacred woods? She couldn't wait for Nev to get it together long enough to check things out. Not if someone had evil intentions that could harm their protected glade.
The scent of burning wood hit first followed by orange and yellow crackling flares dancing in her line of vision. Crouching lower, she eased forward trying to stay aware of her surroundings. She wanted to catch whoever had lit the match by surprise.
Nev's voice echoed in her mind. No solitary patrols until we figure out what's going on.
She argued back under her breath. "We don't have the luxury of time if someone's out here lighting fires."
She should've been looking down instead of side to side. She crossed the salt barrier before she realized it. But she noticed it when she couldn't go further. Someone—or something—sealed the circle. Shoulders slumping, because she'd been trapped like a rookie fresh out of class, she ruthlessly shut out Nev's voice.
Then she slowly turned to face her captor, her eyes going wide with shock. "Well, damn. Kind of hoped and expected to never see you again."
But seeing them … explained a lot.

Just getting started on this story and I'm excited to see where it goes. The sages are chattering about Thea and Nev, which is always a good thing.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Into the Fray

A weird week of chilly weather and lots of cleaning projects. I'm at that place where the clutter is driving me bonkers, but I don't have enough hours in the day to really focus on a good cleanout. So … I'm tackling small areas to at least make a little progress.

Lots of work projects landing in my inbox. A few have been quick turnarounds, which I enjoy. I love having a project that I can finish up in a few hours. That type of work helps when I also have three difficult manuscripts that challenge my brain and one that requires a lot of focus.

Had a solid week of viewing. I'm still trying to finish up an episode of Peak Practice, but I made it through a full round of shows.

Started with Mr. and Mrs. Murder, an Australian mystery series. I've seen several episodes but not in order and I'm looking forward to watching this one from beginning to end. Thoroughly enjoyed the first episode, which I had not seen.

Also started a new-to-me British crime drama called London Kills. Loved the first episode and look forward to watching this series.

Caught another episode of Death in Paradise introducing the new DI. Enjoyed the interaction between the commissioner and his new lead detective. Interesting to have someone Patterson doesn't particularly like as part of the team.

Started a new two-part Silent Witness. I'm intrigued by the premise of this one. I thought the episode felt a little disjointed and I'm hoping the initial murder somehow ties into the other two. Kind of happy to be guessing on this one.

Watched a fun episode of Elementary with the return of Lestrade. I love the actor, so I love the character. Plus, he's much less annoying than Mycroft.

Enjoyed an episode of The Batman. Finally got a return of Batgirl. I'd forgotten Firefly powered up in a big way and almost blew up Gotham. Great episode.

Caught another new-to-me episode of Classic Rugrats. I'm not a great fan of the three-vignette format but I do have a lot of love for this series.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Into the Fray, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the miniblurb:

Hex Harrigan usually gets Wiley Star out of trouble. When Hex goes against a council decision and gives the go to rescue a group of bounty hunters, he lands on the hot seat and is stripped of his authority. Wiley cuts a deal to get him reinstated and then takes the heat because she can't and won't work without him.

And a preview snippet…

"You did what?" Wiley ran a hand through her hair. "Are you insane? We're down eight people and you strip Hex of his privileges?" Her brain spun with ways she could fix this act of stupidity. "And you want me to take over as lead?" No way.
She didn't want the responsibility. Not when the council couldn't agree on anything, up to and including the color of the damn sky. Or pretty much anything else … hence the reason Hex shouldered the burden to bring their coworkers and friends back.
The council head arched his brows. "He went against protocol and came back alone. There has to be consequence for his action."
Wiley bit back a curse. "So, basically, if he had brought everyone home, we wouldn't be having this conversation." She snorted. "You know how fucked up that is, right?" Did the guy work at being obtuse?
Probably just came naturally.
The council head shrugged. "It is what it is." He folded his hands on the desk.
Wiley wanted to smash his face into the wall. "No, it is what you want it to be. Because you're now nine people down. We're spread too thin, and the whole reason Hex went off on his own is because you sent me out to deal with a nothing problem that could have waited." She had no doubt if they'd gone together, they'd be flush with bounty hunters again.
The head council narrowed his gaze. "You knew then? That Harrigan planned to attempt a rescue?" Censure laced his tone.
Hell, no. She didn't have a clue Hex decided to go rogue, but she fully supported his doing so. But she wouldn't give creep-face the satisfaction of the truth.
Instead … she might just salvage the entire shitshow.
Wiley folded her arms over her chest. "I not only knew, I planned the whole damn thing." A whopper of a lie, but she didn't care. "Give Hex his privileges back and I'll turn mine in when we get our hunters out." Creep-face would get to save face and garner his pound of flesh while doing so.
The head pursed his lips again. "I suppose that's agreeable. You have forty-eight hours to enact your rescue mission."
Wiley grunted. "You don't ask for much." They'd be hard-pressed to pull anything off now, especially without the element of surprise.
The head's lips curved in a thin smile. "I'm confident you'll do your best if only to leave the service on a high note." He pushed away from his desk and stood. "Clock starts at midnight."
Wiley lifted her chin. "By your leave." She spun around and stalked to the exit.
Hex would lose his shit when she told him what she'd done.

Just getting this one started and I can't wait to see what the sages come up with.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Hot Target

Whew! What a week. It's been something of a wild ride. My daughter starts graduate school in Athens the week of August 25, and we're still trying to figure out her financial aid. She's headed to Ontario Canada this week for a theater festival, which is what she'll be getting her master's degree in. My work inbox is overflowing! I'm so grateful for all the new projects but also a little daunted by how much I have stacked up and waiting for me to get to. My car also has an issue that we're hoping is not the computer. I'll know more on Monday. Ugh!

I didn't get much done on the viewing front. Too many things needed my focus elsewhere. Between the phone calls for school and car problems, my brain turned to mush. Bleh.

I did get an episode of Best in Paradise in. I enjoyed it again. It's fun to have the introductions from the cast members.

I also got to watch the closing episode of Death in Paradise season eight. A very interesting and twisty episode with a really cool gesture at the end from the commissioner.

And I also finished up the main draft of a holiday manuscript I've been working on for, geez, almost a year. The sages finally cooperated and threw a bunch of ideas out. I'm so happy about that.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Hot Target, a novella that puts a couple in the line of fire.

Here's the miniblurb:

Yates and Baylor work undercover for the mage council. They make a great team, but rarely see eye to eye. When their magical brethren start dropping like flies, one of them must become a hot target. Yates decides he'll do it … Baylor's a better shot.

And a preview snippet…

Yates expected the face-first shove against the wall when they got to their place. Baylor needed to work off some aggression and he didn't mind rough sex. Her hands were all over him. She pulled his jacket down and spun him around then ripped his shirt open.
She sucked on his skin, leaving marks, branding him as hers. His head fell back, and he gave her full rein. Welcomed the harsh breath and the sting of her teeth against his flesh. He didn't help when she struggled to get his jeans down past his hips. His hands weren't free to assist anyway.
Hissed air escaped between his teeth when her hot mouth surrounded his dick, and she engulfed his shaft until she gagged. Easing back, her tongue swirled and flicked over the tip and down the length. She got up, yanked her shirt off, unclasped her bra, and shrugged it off, letting her breasts hang free. She pushed him down a little and leaned in. He latched on to a pebbled tip, and her guttural moan sent more blood flowing to his cock.
She worked her pants down and off then nudged him down to a crouch on the floor. With his arms behind him, she had to do all the maneuvering. He braced his shoulders and lifted his hips, offering his shaft to use however she wanted.
Climbing over his thighs, she used one hand to stroke over her folds. Wet and ready, she brought her fingers to his mouth, and he sucked them clean. Sliding over his erection, she furiously rocked her hips, the heated silk of her essence surrounding every inch.
Her mouth covered his and her tongue delved between his teeth. The relentless embrace lasted until she needed air. He dragged gulps of air into his lungs and readied for more.
Her lips grazed along his jawline to his ear. "Make me come, Yates." She nipped at his lobe, a hot breath fanning along his skin.
He thrust upward, nudging her back to trail open-mouthed kisses over her shoulder and down to her breast. He sucked the skin beside her nipple, marking her, before his lips drew the taut peak inside his mouth. He worried his teeth over the nub, biting gently.
Baylor groaned low in her throat. "Yeah, Yates. That's it." Her hands held his head and directed it back and forth between her breasts. She bucked hard against him, a shudder tearing through her. "Gah, yes. Come with me, Yates." She arched her back, reaching down to fondle his balls.
He tensed and came hard, gasping her name. Baylor hauled him close and helped him get his jacket off. His fingers were numb, but the rest of his body thrummed with life.
Her hands cupped his face. "Thank you. I needed that." She brushed her lips over his.
Yates rested his forehead on hers. "Anytime." Any place. Any way.
Without speaking, she untangled their limbs then offered him a hand up. She led the way to the shower and pulled him in with her. Yates wrapped his arms around her, letting the water cascade over their bodies. Spent and sated, she'd finally be ready to buckle down and talk facts.

This one is coming together in the best way. I'm very excited to see it completed!

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Hell Is in the Details

Washing machine update. The new washer got here and I'm happy to say the mountain of clothes is now a manageable pile. It's amazing!

Coffeemaker update. The new one arrived and it's a combo single cup or full pot. I love it. Here's hoping my caffeine habit doesn't trash this one in under a year.

Another crazy-busy work week. I finished up the mystery and the romance copy edits and started a cozy mystery. Also continued with novella edits. Had a couple of calls about two or three new projects. I'm excited! I also managed to get some good writing in for myself. A good week!

I didn't get much of anything watched on my viewing schedule. I did a LOT of social media scrolling, especially after Biden stepped aside and endorsed Kamala Harris for the democratic nomination. That's unexpected and exciting. Also spent a lot of time shaking my head over the GOP nomination for vice president. It's going to be an interesting couple of months.

And that's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Hell Is in the Details, a novella that explores what happens to a couple when one of them takes the other for granted.

Here's the miniblurb:

Macyn has a one-night stand with an immortal creature and suffers the consequences when he traps her in a maze of deception. Once free, she withdraws from her clan and it's up to Vig to bring her back from the brink of madness.

And a preview snippet…

Macyn ignored the stab of pain from his statement. Emphasis on her. Right.
She inhaled deeply. "Why the hell not?" The reason better be good because his lack of faith in her pissed her off.
Vig sighed. "Because you have to have your heart and mind so full of someone else the immortal can't draw from your life force." He paused a moment. "That means you have to be open and trust someone enough to give them power over both." He kept his features schooled with the exception of an arched brow.
And, okay, this time she deserved his doubt. Giving control over to someone else had never been her bailiwick. She met people as equals or nothing. And she handled sex the same way.
But … if Vig's idea worked, she couldn't not try. "Let's say I can. How does that kill the immortal?" Because if that fucker came back again, she'd end her life to be finished with him.
Vig lifted a shoulder. "It might not kill Bartlett, but it should weaken him enough to take his life force or drain it." He met and held her gaze. "The more you trust and love, the stronger your bond with someone else, the faster his chi will be drained."
She struggled to wrap her head around the concept. Once upon a time, she'd have said Vig fit the role of person she trusted most and loved the deepest. And yet … she'd never told him. Then she went totally off the rails and landed in Barnett's clutches.
Not her best moment.
And now … she had to get free. Obviously, shooting, stabbing—twice, strangulation, poison, fire … none of the other options she'd used worked to get rid of the horrific nightmare she'd unleased. But this—if she could expose herself completely to someone else—sounded too good to be possible.
Vig would be the only person she'd consider. But could she really give him dominion? Hadn't she had that once? With him? Yeah, maybe not so much. Tearing down walls and opening her heart didn't come easy … if either came at all.
But she had to try to get out of her own way.
She closed her eyes for a moment, then focused on Vig again. "Explain how this would work."

This story is full of twisty turns, and I love how it's coming together. Vig and Macyn have some big hurdles to get through.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Fancy Meeting You Here

Had a super emotional day yesterday with my daughter graduating from college with a bachelor's in media production and theater. She starts grad school in the fall for arts administration. I'm so proud of her! And … considering she had a drive-through high school graduation, getting to see her walk for her bachelor's made me very happy.

Had another good week of work and writing. I finished up two manuscript edits and a proofread on the work front and wrote several scenes in three or four of my WIPs. I'm not quite where I want to be on my writing, but I'm getting back to form.

Actually had a solid week of viewing also. Maybe the planets are aligned where I need them to be right now. Who knows?

Watched two episodes of Elementary and, wow, I rather like what they did with the Moriarity thing. Looking forward to seeing how that ends up. I think I have one more episode of the first season.

Started season three of The Batman and watched two episodes. I remembered both and enjoyed each one.

Caught two episodes of Classic Rugrats. I think I'm at the end of season seven where the two vignettes are actually one episode. Kind of liked that format. I think the new theme starts with season eight. I'll find out this week I think.

Started a new season of Suspects. Loved the opening episode. It did not go where I thought it would and I love that.

Watched another episode of Madame Blanc Mysteries. Broken-hearted for Gloria. I kind of hope there's more to the story about Cooper. I kind of want to find out what his whole deal was with Gloria.

Enjoyed another episode of Death in Paradise. I don't remember this one at all and actually loved it. Definitely a twisty one.

Caught the first part of Silent Witness. I'm excited to see where this one goes. There's definitely more than meets the eye for this case. I'm not thrilled with the new addition to Jack's life. I love his niece, but the mom is a piece of work and I don't like her at all.

Started a new episode of Peak Practice. I'll try to finish it up this week. Not sure what's up with Sam but I assume the seeds are being planted for his departure and that's why he's being such a prat right now.

Last but not least, I started a documentary called Broken Horses, mainly because it features the author of one of the books I've been working on and his stance that the drugging of horses needs to stop. I can honestly say it's a hard watch and my personal thought there might be a trainer who should never, ever be allowed to participate in the sport ever again. But that's just me.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Fancy Meeting You Here, a novella that brings a couple together under fraught circumstances.

Here's the miniblurb:

Jonni Mars and Val Janison are enforcers for two opposing mage families and have a friendly rivalry. When Val, a member of the ruling house, shows up at Jonni's favorite underground dive, she's both infuriated and intrigued, and more than a little surprised to meet him under almost normal circumstances.

And a preview snippet…

Dammit. She hated being called on her bullshit.

Taking a deep, cleansing breath, she listed her issues with black and white. "That's an encapsulated version." She flung out a hand. "But you've got a point. I don't disrespect you. The snark and biting comments are my defense." Pacing back and forth, she muttered. "I'm trying to stay out of you head the only way I know how." But she didn't have to be a complete bitch.

Val lifted his chin. "I get it." He shoved his hands in his pockets. "But … can we call a truce? The whole reason we came to the Warwick is to unravel the connection, figure out how and why it's happening." Leaning against the wall, he crossed one booted foot over the other.

Jonni calmed down. "Okay. Yeah. We should get on the same page." She huffed out a frustrated breath. "But I have no idea how to even start." Or where.

Val pushed away from the plastered surface and made his way to the couch. "I suggest we walk back to the night we fought Philan. That started this." He slouched down, kicking his feet out.

She reluctantly agreed. "Yeah, okay. But I still don't know what happened or how it did." She'd never had a slip like that, not even with Rochelle and they'd been like sisters.

Val rolled a shoulder. "Look, I'll own having an instant attraction to you. Maybe that's at play?" His lips turned down, which showed his discomfort with the idea.

Jonni admitted the same. "Yeah, there's a spark there. Like I've known you for years … which I sort of do." She planted herself in the chair opposite the sofa. "Everyone knows the major players in the three clans." At least everyone that worked with or for ruling families.

Val grunted. "Yeah, but it's more than that. I've got a reputation for being very cool under pressure, but I've been on edge since you invaded my mind." He shook his head.

Jonni got defensive. "Not like I tried to do it." The reply sounded lame, but she really didn't have a clue how she'd mindslipped into his consciousness.

Val met her gaze. "Okay. I believe that." He straightened and leaned forward, placing his forearms on his knees. "Maybe see if you can do it now."

What did they have to lose?

Jonni probed but couldn't get through. "I've got nothing." Hope filled her. "Progress?" Gah, she hoped so.

Val gave a shrug. "Possibly. Let's wait a while and see what happens." He leaned back against the cushions again.

Jonni arched her brows. "Seriously? I've got things to do." Like figure out why she kept hitting dead ends.

Val folded his arms over his chest. "Tell me about them." He gave her a look that dared her to deny his request.

Jonni sighed and explained about her false leads and frustration. They talked a little more and she got comfortable. Val had some solid ideas about picking up the cold trail. And he didn't appear to find her lack of progress overly concerning. It took time to run down leads and false starts were part of the job.

She started to comment but got a very vivid image of being sprawled naked on a featherbed, her legs splayed wide and Val's head between them. His hands grasped her hips and he drew her closer to his delving tongue. A hot flush washed over her, and she gasped.

Pissed off, her gaze flew to his. "What the hell, Val?" She shot up off the chair and ran a hand through her hair.

Val gave a grunt. "See … you're still doing it." He smirked, an unrepentant look on his face.

She whirled to face him. "Dammit! Why? I do not want to be in your head." Huffing out a harsh breath, she made a hard admission. "It's distracting—even when I'm not traipsing through your thoughts. The fact I can constantly buzzes around in my brain." Why did this happen now?

Val gave a slow nod. "I agree. And we need to figure this out." He leaned forward again. "I say we either order something in or get takeout. Because it's gonna be a long night."

Jonni grabbed her jacket. "I need some air." The whole mindslip thing had her twitchy. "I'll get the food." She didn't wait for a response, heading out and dashing down the stairs.

She didn't think twice about what she ordered. Not until she headed out of the restaurant.

She had no doubt she had exactly what Val wanted.

I love how this story is coming together. Jonni and Val are a fun couple to write.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Blending In

I got slammed with a nasty cold and definitely feel it this week. Completely derailed my daily relaxation stress reducer posts. I'll hopefully catch back up next week or start over again for the new year.

Finished up several work-related projects and added a few to my calendar. Hoping to start the new year off with a full slate to stay busy.

Not a bad week of television, even with the icky cold making me super tired and exhausted.

Watched another episode of My Life Is Murder and enjoyed it. I'm still trying to get used to the New Zealand locale with the second season. Still a fun show.

Caught the second half of Agatha Raisin. Feel very badly for James, who kind of seems like the odd man out of the group. Loved how this one played out.

Started a new two-part Silent Witness and not sure on the new pathologist. He's not bad, I guess. Clearly, it's time to shake things up for Jack, which probably means things won't go well when his brother gets out of prison.

Enjoyed another Death in Paradise, which is one I didn't remember. I'm getting into the Humphrey episodes I missed on the first watch.

Watched another episode of Elementary and quite liked the dynamic. I'm very interested in getting into more of what happened with Joan's medical career. Sherlock is definitely true to form and I'm getting into this version.

Caught another episode of The Batman. I think I have one or two more episodes of the first season then a bit of a shift to the second one.

Enjoyed another episode of Classic Rugrats. For some reason, I think I might have missed a season or at least some episodes. I'll do a run through after I finish up the sixth season.

Continued with The Secret Life of Amy Benson. I'm intrigued by how the season is unfolding and I'm kind of interested in where things are going to go.

Finished out the week with an episode of VIP. Some familiar early aughts faces in this one. Also a fun episode.

That's pretty much it on the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Blending In, a novella that puts a couple undercover and brings them together despite their best intentions of staying apart.

Here's the miniblurb:

Wren and Ethan go undercover in the seedy Bottoms. Ethan's by the book style clashes with Wren's off the cuff attitude, but when a powerful mage makes a threat, they'll have to forge an unbreakable bond or go down in flames.

And a preview snippet…

Ethan considered Wren's justification. "Okay, what's next?" He might as well roll with tide.

She suggested an info gathering opportunity. "No engagement. We go in, get some intel, and come out. That's it." She made a few adjustments to her outfit, knotting the T-shirt under her breasts and letting her hair down.

Ethan followed Wren into Hunter's Glen, his heart pumping with both anticipation and trepidation. He didn't do on-the-fly work and he feared it would show. He didn't want to let her down.

Once inside, he waited for his eyes to adjust to the dim interior. "I'll follow your lead. I need a few minutes to get into the role and follow the vibe." And maybe get his shit together.

Wren jerked her head, acknowledging the request. She led him through the throng of people and directly by the trio who'd drawn their attention. The mood coming from the bar area consisted of boisterous bravado mixed with an angry undertone.

Ethan adopted a besotted demeanor, trailing behind Wren like he couldn't wait to get his hands on her. Not a hard sell for him. This might not be as difficult as he'd thought.

She led him to a corner table in a shadowy recess close to the bar. Good cover and strategically located. He admired her quick and spot-on assessment.

Tugging him close, she spoke quietly in his ear. "Look oblivious to everyone but me but pay very close attention to the conversations." She settled onto a chair and gave him a sexy smile.

He scooted his around so he could play the part she assigned to him. Leaning one arm over her shoulder, he twisted her toward him so they looked extra cozy. Her eyes went wide but she didn't resist. And a note of admiration crept into the dark depths. He'd made the right move.

She tilted her head toward him, doing a good impression of a private conversation, but her attention focused on the bar. Ethan tracked the conversations at the line of pool tables. Deviating from the plan might end up paying off if the first hour they spent barely touching their drinks and eavesdropping indicated anything.

He leaned in, speaking in low tones. "Sounds like the triple threat is here to meet the wall of muscle on table two." He eased back and gave her a bold stare.

Wren tipped her chin. "Sounds right. They're waiting until the weasel-faced guy leaves. They don't trust him." She scooted closer, almost sitting on his lap.

But it put her in a prime position when the trio of Orion men made their way to the pool tables. Under the guise of practically making out, Ethan and Wren spent the next sixty minutes carefully catching the bulk of the planned attack on a group of fae intermediaries. Wren's eyes widened when the crucial piece of information dropped. The big ringleader told the trio to be ready within the week.

Ethan made a move to stand, pushing his chair back a little, but Wren slid up onto his lap.

She rested her forehead against his. "Not yet. Too obvious. Let the game wind down first." She eased back and held his gaze.

He didn't argue and gave a barely perceptible nod. Moving his hands up, he palmed her thighs, keeping her from shifting back to her seat. Her lips quirked but she didn't resist.

The final ball sank into the pocket and a round of drinks was raised to the winners. Ethan checked his urge to make tracks. He'd follow Wren's lead again.

When they drew a stare or two from the burly bikers and some raunchy commentary, Wren did a sensuous slide off his lap and tugged him upward.

They left to whistles and catcalls and thankfully before anyone tried something stupid.

Once outside, she clasped his palm. "We're primed with some good intel. Keep acting the part until we clear the next block." She shivered a little from the bite in the wind.

Ethan wrapped an arm around her and tucked her into his side. Neither spoke, pretending to be too into each other to talk. They made their way across the street and headed for the little apartment over the thrift shop.

This story is getting a second book because Ethan and Wren have more to say about their relationship.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Worlds Collide

Ohio had record high temperatures this past week, but the weekend has brought some fall-like weather. I'm looking forward to seeing the leaves change even if it seems like the colors are less vibrant than they used to be.

Juggled several work projects and I'm in the final stages of two and starting a couple of small new ones. I'm liking the mix of things I'm currently working on. It's fun to stretch my wings sometimes.

Had a solid week of viewing, which seems weird because I did have a lot of work stuff to get done.

I started a new to me series with Agatha Raisin and thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes. I think I'm going to like this one!

I finished up season two of Suspects and, wow, the last episode kind of packed a punch. I'll have to wait to see if more episodes become available on the streamer I use. I'm not quite ready to sign up for yet another one to see the remaining seasons.

Caught the first episode of Peak Practice season ten. Also started the second episode but got a little distracted. I might end up skipping a few because I really don't care about Andrew and his affair.

Watched a Silent Witness two-parter that dived into the Troubles and thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns.

Forgot to include Battlestar Galactica in last week's recap. Watched "Captain's Hand," which is one of my favorite episodes. This week we watched "Downloaded," which is kind of the beginning of the end to a promising series. With twenty years of hindsight, I can honestly say I didn't need or want to know that much about the cylons.

Enjoyed two episodes of Death in Paradise. I loved the hurricane episode. Only Richard would think it's just a little wind. One more episode for season two and then it's time for a changing of the guard.

Caught two episodes of Fantasy Island. I'll admit, I'm on the fence with Roark and Javier. I'm kind of down with the building of the friendship and letting Javier all Elena out for trying to protect Ruby. The thing is … he's not wrong, but he should also know Elena might have been down this road before and she almost always has information she can't share, which is kind of hinted at when Ruby more or less forgets about Mel. What's next? She forgets her kids? So … I rather love that this thread looks like it will be spun out to a thin tether. Also makes me wonder what's in store with Ruby's tattoo.

Watched two more episodes of The Batman. ManBat and Victor Frieze were the bad guys for these two. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this show the first run through.

Enjoyed two episodes of Classic Rugrats. Finally had another one with Susie, which makes me happy. Also forgot how much fun it was to have Chuckie act like Angelica for a day.

Started a rewatch of VIP. Sometimes it's so much fun to go back to shows from the late nineties and early aughts and enjoy the creative license and sheer escapism they provide.

Also started another new to me series with My Life Is Murder. I'm not quite finished with the episode, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far!

And that's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Worlds Collide, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the miniblurb:

On the eve of a major battle between supernatural factions, Frida Hapspell and Quant Undersmith ponder their fate and their future. With family relationships at stake, Frida takes steps to make Quant face the widening chasm he's creating with his dad … especially because she's the reason they're at odds.

And a preview snippet…

Frida Hapspell quickened her pace. "Why do I always lose track of time?" The mandatory curfew started well over two hours ago.

And she'd been holed up in the catacombs doing research. Someone had to figure out a way to open negotiations with the fae before an all-out war started. She would definitely not be the someone, but her knack for digging into subjects and boiling them down to their very essence would give whoever landed the unenviable task a leg up.

Footfalls crunched on the road behind her, and Frida cut through an alley and backed up against the wall of a bookstore. "Friend or foe?" She didn't want to find out but might not have a choice.

Peering around the corner of the building, her shoulders slumped. "Shit. Foe." Sliding further back into the alley, she made a quick run for the street and darted across, keeping away from the lamppost and its diffused light.

What the hell are shifters doing out? Of course, they weren't part of the mage society and didn't abide by the curfew. Only those who wanted the wrath of the Undersmiths paid no attention to the safety measures the ruling family put in place.

Crouching behind a half wall, Frida grimaced. "Which is not me." She cursed herself for getting too engrossed in the supernatural law tomes.

The two beings following her paused in the middle of the road, sending their gazes and, no doubt, their noses in both directions. She wouldn't stay hidden long if they got her scent. She risked glancing around, a spark of hope filling her when a lone individual came out of the corner deli.

He dropped his wrapped order on the ground and called out. "Hey, it's after curfew. You guys need to get inside and locked down for the night." He started toward the duo.

The two shifters smirked and stood shoulder to shoulder. Frida's heart sank when each made a partial transformation, their hands taking on their wolf form. Barely a second passed before they launched forward and grabbed her would-be rescuer by the throat.

Frida gasped. "Aw, shit. What the hell is he doing out after curfew?" She recognized the younger son of Stanton Undersmith.

She'd graduated with his older brother, Quant. Everyone knew the Undersmiths by sight if nothing else. The family stayed active in the community they oversaw.

Brant's startled gaze met hers for a brief moment … right before the larger of the two slashed Brant's jugular with a thick claw.

Frida bit back a scream and bile filled her mouth. She didn't want to give her position away. And she definitely didn't want to become the next victim of the shifters.

"What the hell? Stop. You're violating curfew and under arrest…" The voice trailed off when the shifters tossed Brant in its direction.

Frida took another quick look over the edge of the concrete. One of the Undersmith patrolmen held Brant's lifeless body in his arms. Frida caught sight of the shifters in full transformation tearing down the road in the opposite direction. Stifling the urge to heave her guts up, she scrambled to her feet and ran the four blocks to her building.

With shaking hands and tears flowing down her cheeks, she flipped the runes and quickly ducked inside before sinking to the floor and closing her eyes.

I just witnessed the murder of Brant Undersmith.

His death had saved her. She had no doubt his intervention kept the two shifters from killing her. The fae were gearing up for battle and taking out a member of the ruling family wouldn't go unavenged.

Resting her head on her knees, Frida dragged in a watery breath. "What the flaming hell am I going to do?" She needed time to think and process everything that happened.

She had a friendship with Quant, something she didn't want to trash. But she also inadvertently caused his brother's death, which would set Stanton on the warpath. And she really didn't want to be a casualty of the fallout.

No matter what way she turned, she'd landed smack dab between a rock and a hard place.

This story is just getting started and I'm so excited to see where it goes. I love writing Frida.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!
