Sunday Snippet: Tangled Web

A very long week with wild weather and lots of things going on, including back-to-school shenanigans, roadwork, and tons of laundry.

Kind of a repeat from last week with thunderstorms rolling through the state and a day or two of plain old rain, which is actually kind of nice … except for flooding, which we didn't have but other areas in the state did.

Work stayed busy. Still removing images from a manuscript to get it ready for a copy edit. But the good news is I should finish up today or tomorrow. I put the project aside when we had storms because I won't change losing all the work put in so far.

Pretty decent viewing week even with the wild weather. Made it through my full slate of shows and had a couple of binge watches of Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise.

Started with an episode of Marple and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very different from another version and a great cast.

Finished up Coastal Ireland and loved it. Especially enjoy watching someone who loves the country show their favorite locations.

Caught another episode of Beyond Paradise and I'm truly wondering how things will end up working out with Anne being on the committee overseeing the police. Here's hoping she finds a way to keep the team together.

Watched another episode of Poirot and, whew, what a very twisty mystery. And a great cast made it all work.

Elementary had another great offering. I enjoy seeing Sherlock not at his best but also watching Joan kind of rally behind him. And he's still got a leg up on everyone else even with the post-concussion stuff he's going through.

Caught another episode of Young Justice and quite enjoyed watching the team work together while defying orders.

Enjoyed another episode of Star Trek Lower Decks and I'm so happy the lower deckers are back together. Also loved seeing T'Lyn going the extra mile to fill the gap Tendi left and then join in the celebration when she returned.

No backburner shows this week. We'll see if there's time week, but probably not as I have a long day on Saturday to meet my cousins for our annual get together.

That's the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Tangled Web, a novella with a noir flair.

Here's the miniblurb:

Ruby Ire is bad for men—every time she falls for one he ends up dead, so she doesn't get tangled up with them anymore. But a series of near miss accidents makes her think she's become a target and she hires Jordan Riceman to track down her attacker. And she absolutely will not let Jordan get too close, no matter how damned attractive he is.

And a preview snippet…

Ruby paced the back sitting area where she and Melba had their tea sessions. "My butterflies are having a wild time right now." She placed a hand on her stomach and inhaled deeply.
She hated living with the unknown. Especially when she didn't know if someone had it out for her. But the coincidences were too many, and her conscience wouldn't let her ignore the possibility.
She made another back and forth across the floor. What if Jordan Riceman didn't come? No. She wouldn't think that way. Thelma assured Ruby no man would be able to resist a cryptic message from a damsel in distress.
Ruby snorted. "They might when the meeting takes place in a beauty parlor." But the genius idea cooked up with Thelma should provide the cover Ruby needed.
The bell chimed and Ruby's heart rate kicked into high gear. Had he arrived?
Thelma raised her voice in greeting. "Right this way, Mr. Riceman." The clack-clack of her heels got closer.
Ruby turned at the swish of the curtain. Oh my. Her first glance at Jordan Riceman took her breath away. Tall with short hair, he wore it longer on top. His locks had a natural wave that gave him a charming rakish look.
Thelma gave Ruby a quick wink, indicating her thoughts about Mr. Riceman. "I'll just go lock up so there won't be any interruptions." She sashayed out but not before her eyes went wide for a second and her lips made a silent wow.
The idea Ruby needed to stay away from anything personal hit high alert. And sent a kick of regret through her. She would so enjoy seeing if the roguish appeal went farther than skin deep. But no. No, no, no. She wouldn't risk anyone else's life.
Putting on a cool facade, she thrust out her hand. "Mr. Riceman. Ruby Ire. Thank you for coming."
He flashed a smile. "It's my pleasure, Ms. Ire." He shook her hand, holding it for a moment.
Long enough for Ruby to feel the zing of connection travel along her arm.

I love this story and the twists and turns it takes. Jordan and Ruby are in for a bit of a ride.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Take a Walk on the Wild Side

Yeesh. I'd really like Ohio weather to calm the eff down. We've had storms all week and we're getting hammered today. Severe thunderstorm warnings, tornado warnings, it's wild.

We did have a break in the yucky weather on Friday and got to attend a fun concert to benefit our local botanical garden and a local pet shelter. We had a truly great time and my extended family participated in the musical lineup.

Had a busy work week filled with some tedious little stuff and some technology problems. I did manage to get a copy edit finished up and worked on formatting a family history book that has a ton of images in it. That one is kind of challenging because the copy edit can't be done with the images in the document and I'm pulling them out and adding design tags.

Not a bad viewing week. I made it through my usual slate and started a back-burner episode. The weather kind of affected being able to finish that one. I also did another binge watch of Death in Paradise on Ovation.

Started with an episode of Marple and enjoyed it. I rather liked the cast of characters in this episode and, whew, did it have some twisty turns.

Started a new series for me with Adrian Dunbar's Coastal Ireland. I love seeing the landscape and shorelines of the country. It's so beautiful.

Caught an episode of Beyond Paradise and I'm so bummed that Humphrey has to reduce his staff by one. I hope it ends up working out by the end of the season. I also wish I understood more about why Esther doesn't want to be happy with Archie. Maybe they'll delve into that a little more.

Watched an episode of Poirot and truly enjoyed it. Always nice to see old friends and the behind-the-scenes machinations were interesting.

Elementary had a great opening to its sixth season. Sherlock's struggle post-concussion adds an interesting layer of conflict and I'm happy with Joan's response.

Caught an episode of Young Justice and enjoyed it. Great to see the team pull together and also nice to see the Justice League's trust in their ability.

Enjoyed the season opener of Star Trek Lower Decks season five. Very fun to see a mirror of the crew and how different things could turn out.

Watched The Thin Man again because I was in the mood for something fun. I need to find the other Nick and Nora movies somewhere, because they're so enjoyable.

Started an episode of Peak Practice but the thunderstorms put a halt to finishing it. I'll maybe get to it later this week.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Take a Walk on the Wild Side, a follow up to Long Time No See.

Here's the minblurb:

After dealing with repercussions from the Vallas clan, Val Janison steps into a leadership role he's not thrilled to have. Jonni Mars works behind the scenes as a liaison between the three ruling families and tries to broker a peaceful resolution. In the middle of everything, the couple makes an attempt to keep their relationship solid … with mixed results.

And a preview snippet…

Val's mood instantly improved the moment his mouth touched Jonni's. I could stand here all day with her.
He eased away, resting his forehead against hers. "Damn. I've missed you." He hadn't realized how much until her voice came through the speaker on his desk.
Sliding his hand down her arm, he laced their fingers together. "Come with me…" He moved into the prep kitchen and stopped before a paneled wall.
Tapping a notch in the wood, he released a lock and the wall slid inward.
Jonni's eyes widened. "Of course you have a secret passageway." She shook her head but followed him inside.
Val grinned. "We'll go directly to my suite, which will bypass anyone who might be looking for me." He made a turn at a junction in the narrow corridor.
Jonni glanced toward the route they didn't take. "Where does that one lead?" Her curiosity came through loud and clear.
Val shrugged. "To a room behind the main stairwell. It's used during large gatherings to go from the kitchen to the foyer so servers can quickly reach the ballroom and meeting room." He paused and nodded toward a set of stairs. "We'll go up this flight and one more then be where no one can bother us." Making the first step, he tugged her behind him.
Jonni laughed. "This could be very convenient for us." Her voice dropped to low growl. "Unless Anton gets in the way."
Val frowned but continued up the next flight of stairs then down to the panel to his suite. He pulled the piece of wall toward him and nodded for Jonni to precede him into the space.
She walked through and her head swiveled back and forth. "You've definitely come up in the world." Turning to face him, her lips twisted in a wry curve.
Val resealed the wall and moved to her side. "It's an empty tomb most of the time." He cupped her face. "And I'm going to chat with Anton. I don't care how he works time with you into my schedule, but he's going to." He brushed his lips over hers. "I need you to function and didn't realize how much until seeing you today." His fingers slid under the hem of her shirt, inching the fabric upward.
Jonni tilted her head to one side. "So what? I'm your battery charger now?" She pulled his button-down from the waistband of his pants.
Val stopped her. "No. You don't merely keep me charged up." He dragged her shirt over her head. "You sustain me…" His mouth moved along her shoulder and up the column of her throat.
Jonni shivered. "And you do the same for me … it's why I had to come here. Because I can't stand being so far apart." She popped the button of his pants and lowered the zipper.
Val pushed her leggings down then scooped her up, carrying her to the huge bed between two floor-to-ceiling windows. He quickly shed his trousers and crawled up on the mattress, his erection straight and proud. Jonni splayed her legs and his dick ached to be inside her.
Jonni crooked her finger. "Don't make me wait. I'm so ready for you." She leaned back into the pile of pillows and cupped her breasts.
Val's mouth captured a taut nipple at the same moment he slid home in a smooth thrust.
Jonni gasped then moaned. "Perfect. This is perfect." Her hips rose to grind against his groin.
Val decided they'd never go so long without each other again.

This is the conclusion of an unnamed series and it's in the beginning stages so far. I love writing this couple and can't wait to see what they get into in this one.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Storm Down the Drain

Had a fun time at my high school reunion on Saturday … even though it was very hot and super humid. Got to see people I haven't seen in absolute ages. So nice to catch up with everyone.

Weather has been a little wild. Big temperature swings again. We've also had some rumbling thunderstorms with interesting lightning. We're supposed to have a very rainy week with more storms rolling through so that should be fun.

Had a busy work week with a few projects coming in for final touches and should be getting close to the finish line. Made more progress on the developmental edit I've been working on and might be close to finishing that one up also. Finished up a proofread and started a new copy edit. Not a bad week.

Made it through my usual slate of shows so had a good viewing week also. I even got to finish up one of my backburner shows. I'll be starting a new series this week and I'm looking forward to picking one out. I also did another Death in Paradise binge on Sunday.

Caught an episode of Marple and rather enjoyed the twists and turns. It was kind of fun to have the show set during the holiday season but not be overtly holidayish.

Finished up Ireland Coast and Country. Enjoyed the dip into some of the country's locations and remarkable scenery.

Started season four of Beyond Paradise. Fun episode setting up a big quandary for Humphrey. I'm kind of excited to see what hijinks Humph and Martha get into with renovating their new house. Very happy to be revisiting Shipton Abbot.

Caught another episode of Poirot and actually enjoyed seeing him in a very different setting. The mystery had some interesting twists and I liked that.

Elementary ended on a concerning note and I'm glad I can drop right into the next season without a long wait. Happy to have the Shinwell murder resolved, and I'm truly thrilled that Moriarty isn't the mystery woman, even though her identity makes me sad.

Watched another episode of Young Justice and enjoyed watching the team come together even when they were on the outs.

Finished up season four of Star Trek Lower Decks and, seriously, I'm going to miss this show so much. I loved everything about this finale … except one thing. Losing a team member sucked but at least there's a chance she'll return.

Also finished up an episode of Peak Practice. It ended up being a pretty good one but had a lot going on. So happy Tom finally owned his feelings!

That's the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Storm Down the Drain, a novella with a bit of suspense with the romance.

Here's the miniblurb:

On a dark and stormy night, Brooks Algonquin knocks on Velvet Strong's door and asks her to help him find the Burmesian Raven, an antiquity with magical qualities. Velvet takes his case, but quickly learns Brooks has ulterior motives for acquiring the artifact stolen from his family.

And a preview snippet…

Velvet's appearance bowled Brooks over when she entered the bistro.
Brooks bit back a groan of raw need. "She's absolutely perfect." And she dressed to draw attention.
Just shy of tartish without going over the top, her makeup showed a woman who didn't mind getting noticed. Nothing demure or sweet, but oh so elegant. She made a statement in the lilac dress that stopped just shy of her knees and the purple heels that made her hips sway when she walked. She'd piled half of her blonde tresses on top of her head, and his fingers itched to remove the pins and plunge through the silky strands. And the white stole and silver clutch added a bit of airy shine to the whole package. Yeah … she created a bombshell vision.
Velvet sauntered to the bar and ordered a drink. The bartender took his time backing up to get the ingredients. He placed the small tumbler on a napkin in front of Velvet.
Brooks placed a large bill on the counter. "The lady's drinks are on me." He enjoyed this role-playing thing.
Velvet gave him a sultry smile. "Why should I let you pick up my tab?" She added just a touch of huskiness to her tone.
Brooks held her gaze. "Because you're a beautiful slice of heaven I needed to see after a hellish day." He turned to face her at the bar.
Her mouth twisted in a coquettish curve, and she ducked her head a little. "In that case, happy to be of service." Her lips wrapped around the short straw and drew the amber liquid up through the opening. "And thank you."
Brooks reached forward, tracing a random pattern on the back of her hands. "Would you have dinner with me?" He nodded toward a smoky corner of the bistro.
Her eyes widened a little. He'd gone off script with the invitation to dine with him. But the moment called for something secluded where they could converse.
Velvet leaned in close, placing her palm on his thigh. "I think I'd like that very much." She slid off the barstool and snagged her drink.
Brooks led the way to a table for two tucked in a corner surrounded by leafy potted plants. He held her chair out until she got settled then found his own seat across from her. They didn't have a moment to converse before a server arrived.
Brooks ordered an intimate meal, which they made banal small talk over. By the time they finished, the trio of musicians had arrived and started their first set. Brooks asked if she'd like to dance.
Velvet gave a nod and he stood, holding his hand out. She clasped his fingers and smoothly followed him to the center of the small squared-off area close to the dais. She played her part as a woman on the brink of falling for him so well.
The night took on a magical quality. Brooks couldn't remember the last time he'd enjoyed himself as much. They might be creating a fiction where Velvet would become his mistress, but Brooks almost wished it were a fact. He could easily envision swaying with her on a nightly basis.
Her body molded to his as they traversed the floor to the beat of the music. Her alluring curves sent his imagination into overdrive. He could picture her naked, writhing underneath him while he drove into over and over. His cock throbbed and she noticed, giving her hips a twist against his groin.
Brooks put his mouth close to her ear. "Before things get out of hand, we should probably make our exit…" His hand moved lower on her back. "You're playing with fire, Ms. Strong."
He got a kick of gratification when she shuddered in his arms before they left the bistro.

I love writing with a flair of noir and this one is a lot of fun. Brooks and Velvet will definitely heat things up.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Still of the Night

August is starting out with a weird vibe. The temperatures have been very mild and I'm wondering how much we'll pay for that in the fall months or the winter. Thrilled for the kiddos going back to school in a week or so because they might not roast during the first few weeks like they normally do.

I'm still trying to get some things that I've been putting off in the checked boxes. I did manage to fix the leak in my bathtub, which was way overdue. Should help with my water bill. I got the part needed to fix the washing machine and that's a project for this week. I hope.

Work projects are going somewhat smoothly. I did have the book that won't go away come back one more time. The developmental edit I've got on the back burner is heating up again. I'm also working on a coaching project that's part pull the manuscript together and part help the author get it ready for a copy edit. Had a solid week with copy edits and proofreads also.

Had another good week for viewing. Nothing extra but made it through my usual slate of shows. Also did another Death in Paradise binge of older seasons.

Started with another episode of Marple. I kind of like the actress playing Jane. She's kind of snappy and a little punchy (not physically) with her dialog and I love it.

Also watched another episode of Ireland Coast and Country. I'm really enjoying this series. I now want to make vermouth. Just saying.

Caught an episode of Death in Paradise and finished up season fifteen. I ended up kind of liking the niece. Looking forward to the holiday episode if there is one this year. And also kind of excited about the next season. I really love this show.

Enjoyed an episode of Poirot. The mystery ended up being kind of twisty and I loved seeing Poirot's author friend again. She's a hoot.

Elementary ended up being really good. The whole thing with the woman who leads meetings and Sherlock kind of came from left field, but I'll hold out to see what happens with that. I'll be disappointed if she ends up being Moriarty. The whole take down of the gang is really interesting. Can't wait to see what happens there.

Watched another episode of Young Justice and pieces are falling in place. Nearing the end of the first season and I'm interested in seeing what happens to the team.

Also caught another episode of Star Trek Lower Decks and love how the season-arc mystery is coming together. Also enjoyed the Cerritos team pulling off a ruse to get what they needed. And the name drops from other shows always make me happy.

That wraps up the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Still of the Night, an Academy of Light novella.

Here's the miniblurb:

Salem Rhys has the perfect recipe for brewing dark lager, a potent alcohol that will go over huge at the mage academy … but doesn’t have the know-how or equipment to create the concoction. Jared Meyer, a tech genius, can definitely help her out. Salem falls hard for her business partner but considers him out of her league until Jared proposes more than a money-making venture.

And a preview snippet…

With smoke starting to creep out along the window frames, Jared dashed into the warehouse to find his grandpa frantically trying to extinguish four fireballs to no avail. The spells he used increased the flames with each incantation. Jared didn't need a hard guess to know his granddad fucked up on an epic level.
He skidded to a stop not far from the old man. "Grandfather, what did you do?" He crossed his arms over his chest.
Jarvis threw him a look. "Don't just stand there, boy, help me. That stupid girl hexed her orbs, but combined, we should be able to overcome the magick and douse the flames." He went back to muttering spells.
Jared snorted. "Looks to me like that very brilliant woman bested you." He stood his ground even though the heat from fire grew with each breath. "What. Did. You. Do?" Something horrible no doubt.
His grandfather paused. "Thought you were up to your old tricks and came to see for myself what you'd gotten into with my money." His gaze lowered to take in the floor.
Jared huffed out a breath. "And you took one look at Salem and decided she was just another gold-digger slut after the family riches." Anger filled him at the thought.
Jarvis's face flushed a darker shade of red. "Actually, I assumed she was another piece of ass and said as much." He raised his gaze to meet his grandson's
Pissed off, Jared shook his head. "Then this place can burn to the ground." He started for the exit.
His grandfather exploded. "What?" He chased after Jared. "No. No, you don't want that. She set me straight. Called me on my bullshit, she did. And she defended you." He grasped Jared's bicep. "Now, help me, Jared." A frantic note entered his voice.
Jared gave it two heartbeats before he tossed out a word. "Hierarchy." He had to give Salem kudos for thinking that one up on the spot.
The orbs extinguished their flames, four piles of ash falling to the floor. Pride filled Jared along with another emotion he didn't recognize until this very moment.
Love.
He loved Salem with everything in him.
Jared walked over to the wall and propped open a window. "You know what? You're a pitiful old geezer… and … you were right to cut me off." He faced Jarvis. "But here's the deal. I'm serious about this venture." And serious about Salem, but dear old granddad didn't need to know that part. "You're going to back off, pay up, and repair the damage … and stay the hell away from Salem." Hell, Jared might not be welcome anywhere near her after his grandfather's stupid stunt.
Jarvis gave a nod. "Fine. I'll cover the damages and leave you two alone."
Jared lifted his chin. "That's a good start." He poked a finger in his grandfather's chest. "And you better hope I can smooth things over with Salem … or flaming fireballs won't be the worst thing you experience from her, old man." His threat delivered, Jared left the building and went to find his business partner … and hopefully a little more.

I'm so happy with this story and how it's coming together. Jared and Salem are a fun couple.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!
