Sunday Snippet: Twilight Kingdom

The first week of June is in the books and I got a big chunk of my garage cleaned out, which makes me very happy.

Work projects are moving along and I'm hoping to line up another project or two in the near future. I love a full calendar!

I had a decent week of television even with the great garage cleanout. I'm not up to my regular schedule yet and I'm actually okay with that.

I finished up the second half of Silent Witness and actually liked the kind of twisty ending it had. Lots of red herrings in this episode.

Started a watch of Death in Paradise. I've never seen this series from the actual beginning and I'm excited to dive in.

Caught another episode of Only Murders in the Building and I loved having some Mabel backstory. The fact she loved The X-Files as a kid makes me so happy.

Continued my rewatch of Battlestar Galactica. "Resistance" is such a great episode … with the exception of introducing a character I absolutely disliked with intense passion.

Watched an episode of Classic Rugrats. The two segments were ones I had forgotten and I'm always happy to watch those.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Twilight Kingdom, a reimagining of Sleeping Beauty.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Jess Gillian heads to the outer rim planets to get away from his overbearing parents—the royal consorts of their home planet. When the heir is away, the evil Maniforti will play, luring Nareen Rhom, a palace ward, into a relationship so he can get close to the rulers. When Nareen gets wise, Maniforti casts a spell holding the entire kingdom in his thrall—until Jess returns and sets things straight.

And a preview snippet…

Jess woke up with a groan. "What the hell happened?" His last clear memory had the no-name bounty hunter saying something about making it worse.

A cool hand pressed against his forehead. "Damn. Glad you finally came to."

Jess blinked to clear his blurry vision and found the bounty hunter's face hovering over his. Shit. Not good.

He snagged her wrist and jerked her forward. "You bitch. Why are you trying to kill me?" The accusation flew past his lips before he could stop it.

She snatched her arm away. "I'm not—stupid man—if I made an attempt on your life, you'd be dead." She snorted. "I've been protecting you but trying not to interfere." She rolled her eyes. "That didn't work out well." Sarcasm came naturally to her.

Jess's eyes widened. "Protecting me? What the hell for?" He'd been fine until she showed up in that backwater bar.

The bounty hunter shrugged. "The prince consort hired me to keep tabs on you. But … I can't reach him. And that's concerning." A note of worry crept into her tone.

Jess grunted. "Because something's wrong. Nari reached out. Probably saved my life, actually … right before you got here." He paused, recalling the desperation in Nari's plea. "Dammit. How long have I been out?"

The bounty hunter lifted a shoulder. "Two days, but—"

Jess winced. "Shit!" He sat up and gasped in pain.

She shoved him back down. "Hold on. You're not gonna be worth anything if you undo everything I just did." She gathered up some nasty smelling herbs and packed them against his skin. "You need at least two more days—preferably three—before you're back in top form." Scooping the concoction into a leather pouch, she tucked it into her bag.

Jess grimaced, but very carefully sat up again. "Get me some clothes." He didn't have two or three days to waste.

She frowned. "Did you hear what I said?"

He lifted his chin. "Yeah. It'll take at least that long to get back home. I'll recuperate on the way." His gaze scanned the room, much cleaner than he'd remembered leaving it.

She made her displeasure known but did as he asked, going to the chest of drawers and retrieving a pair of pants and a shirt.

A thought crept into his head. Old magick. He blinked. Didn't feel telepathic but it did make an odd kind of sense.

The bounty hunter tossed the clothes to him. "I still think it's a good idea to wait." But she gathered her jacket and slid the messenger bag over her shoulder.

While he dressed, he questioned the bounty hunter. "What do you know about the ancient rites?" He only knew as much as Nari shared with him.

No-name's brows drew together. "Why?"

He shook his head. "Just a feeling, but it's like one that's not mine."

The bounty hunter blew out a harsh breath. "Geez, if we're dealing with the old guard shit, we need to go now."

Jess snorted. "Which is what I suggested in the first place."

I love this story! It has a few twists that are so much fun to write.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Red-Eyed Monster

Happy Almost Halloween! Gotta say it's been a week. Several work projects hit at once—which I'm not complaining about—and a couple of disasters decided to show up on my doorstep. It's been a low-bandwidth week for me.

I didn't get a lot of viewing time in, mainly due to the work projects and the distractions from the washing machine going kaput, a trip to the ED for one of my grown kiddos, and having another one out of town and calling to check in several times.

I did get a few things watched. Finished up the Umbrella Academy and, wow, didn't quite expect how things went down. Looking forward to seeing the next episode.

Caught some Classic Rugrats with the Thanksgiving episode. I'd actually forgotten about this one and I'm glad I got to watch it again. I might have to set up a bit of countdown and try to catch all the holiday episodes between now and the solstice.

Watched another Batman: The Animated Series. It's always fun when they have Alfred step out of his comfort zone and this episode definitely makes him stray. That's two in a row and I'm here for it.

Enjoyed an episode of Ted Lasso. I love Roy and Keeley so much. Nate is getting a wee bit annoying. Jamie is … I'm not sure. If he doesn't act like a raging ass, I might be able to stomach seeing him. LOL

Caught another episode of Suspects and loved how it all came together. Some really interesting bits popped and I love the pacing. Great show.

I started another episode of Endeavor but I'll have to finish it when I have higher brain capacity. It has a focus on the space race and I love that.

Watched the second part of Silent Witness and whew, this one ended up being very twisty. Kind of bummed about how it ended but not surprised.

Enjoyed another Classic Who episode. I like the setting for this arc and look forward to the next episode.

Sci Fi Science looked into how to blow up a planet. Had a lot of fun watching this episode. I love so much that fans are featured in each episode.

Started the next episode of Ms. Marvel and love it so far. I'm hoping to finish it up in the near future.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Red-Eyed Monster, a twisty retelling of Hansel and Gretyl.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Psyche Hood and Errol Winkham are best friends, growing up together in the enchanted realm. A sinister darkness and red-eyed metal monster is moving in and Psyche drags Errol out to pick up the trail, little knowing she's playing right into the evil wizard's plan. He wants the red-eyed monster to rain fire down on Errol so Psyche will be alone and his for the taking.

And a preview snippet…

Marcus paced the confines of his bungalow. "Where the hell is she?" Pissed off, he directed his beast to skirt the outer edge of the village while he reached out with his mind to find Psyche.

His blood ran hot when he discovered her location. "Bah! She's with the boy toy again." His hatred of Errol deepened another level. "Probably his idea to take the night off." No doubt to slake his lust with the woman Marcus considered his.

He sneered. "She should've been mine." He'd come very close to binding her to with the dark arts.

He almost succeeded. Her belief in the importance of knowing what dark magick could do led her to a logical conclusion that one should experience the outcome of its use. He'd been happy to guide her in her first forays into wielding the dark power.

But her stupid father put a stop to her visits to Marcus. Then Padrick had him black-balled into exile. But Marcus would have retribution … by seducing Psyche and getting her to succumb to the black arts. She'd belong to him and rule the enchanted forest by his side.

His lips curved upward. "I sense the dark pull in her and I'll bring her over to my way of thinking." She'd become the dark mistress to his dark master. "But first I have to get her away from her constant shadow." But how?

Guiding the beast back to its lair, Marcus decided to leave some signs on its next outing. "Yes, that will do nicely." He'd arrange to drop clues that would lead Psyche and Errol right to Marcus's doorstep.

A laugh rumbled out of his throat. "And directly into a trap for each of them." He settled behind his desk to begin the plot to lure his prey into the snare.

Which would move him one step closer to having Psyche right where he wanted her.

Marcus might get what he wants but holding on to it will be his challenge.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Red Cap

Had a bit of a rough week and felt under the weather for most of it. I did make progress on two of my work projects so not a total loss.

I didn't quite get all the way through my full streaming schedule, but I got a decent amount of viewing completed.

I started the second season of Ted Lasso and quite enjoyed the first episode. I'm interested to see where things go with the psychologist.

Caught another Agatha Christie Hour and loved the cloak and dagger aspect of the episode. Very twisty and turny and an excellent resolution.

Started season six of Endeavor and enjoyed the first episode. Not sure I like the new DCI but I'll see where things go. I don't like not having all the guys together but a shake up now and then is probably good for the show.

Watched another episode of Silent Witness and had no idea Clarissa had a husband. Good to see how they interacted. Interesting premise and I can't wait to see how it plays out.

Started a new arc of Classic Who. It's a bit spooky and I liked the first episode. Looking forward to seeing where this one goes.

Sci Fi Science had a fun topic of traveling to a parallel universe. I like to see how a theoretical physicist puts ideas together that could one day possibly happen.

Enjoyed another episode of Ms. Marvel. This group of characters is a joy to watch. I love the way Kamala interacts with everyone and the show nails the entire awkwardness of being a teenager pretty well.

The finale of Only Murders in the Building did not disappoint! I'm so excited to start season two because I have to know what happens next for our trio of characters.

Started season four of Blue Heelers. Nice to see Roz again even if the circumstances were sad. I'm a little disappointed I won't have new episodes to watch after this season unless I want to jump to eleven.

I'm in the middle of an Umbrella Academy episode and should have it finished up later today. Things are really spiraling and that's not a bad thing.

That's pretty much it for this week's life update. Tonight's post is from Red Cap, a novella that loosely retells Red Riding Hood with a bit of a gender swap.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Magan Drone, a red-capped tree nymph, is ordered to protect Cass Warrison, an earth sprite tasked with guarding the land from the wolf-shifter clan. Magan isn't thrilled with the duty—she and Cass share a complicated past—but her handy skill with a crossbow can stop an evil prophecy from coming to light. She'll do her job and save the day, but no way will she let Cass back into her life.

And a preview snippet…

Cass headed back after completing a circuit of the western edge of the enchanted woods. Not much activity tonight, but he had an uneasy vibe he couldn't quite shake. And he had a shadow. One wearing a red cap and keeping to the trees.

A faint sound caught his attention. He cocked his head and listened. Rustling leaves and a pained cry for help had him changing direction and backtracking several meters.

"Please, is there someone there? I've twisted my ankle and need help."

Cass came upon a lovely blonde sprawled on the ground, her pant leg tangled up in some underbrush. "What happened?" He crouched low and winced when he got a look at the swollen foot joint. "Ack, that looks painful." Untangling the fabric of her pants, he freed her leg from the brambles.

She nodded. "It is. I heard something rustling around, got spooked, and started running." She carefully tried to move and grimaced. "Don't think I can put weight on this."

Cass helped her stand and tucked his shoulder under her arm. "Did you see what made the noise?" He hadn't heard anything, but with another person—who would remain nameless—loitering around that might explain things.

She shook her head. "No, but I caught a scent, like damp fur. Thought maybe a shifter crossed into the enchanted woods."

Cass shot her a quick glance. "What makes you think that?"

She nodded toward a lane leading to one of the cottages. "My great aunt mentioned seeing some movement and warned me to be careful. When I started running, I could hear someone following me."

Cass lifted his chin. "I haven't seen you around. I would've remembered you. You're staying with your aunt?" He walked toward the lane, helping the blonde hobble along.

She gave a quick nod. "I arrived yesterday to visit for a bit. Auntie doesn't have any relatives here. I'm from a different enchanted area where she grew up." She paused a moment then held her free palm out. "Siera Gilmore."

Cass clasped her hand. "Cass Warrison. Nice to meet you, even if it's under less than optimal circumstances." He escorted to the cottage door. "Do you need help wrapping your ankle?"

She shook her head. "I'll be fine. Auntie can help." Her hand twisted the knob but she angled her head around. "If you'd like to drop by in a day or so, I'd love to see you again. Maybe make some lunch for you as a thank-you."

Cass grinned. "I'd like that." He waited for her to enter the cottage before turning to head home.

A brief flash of red above him spiked his irritation. "Why are you following me?" His gaze went to the trees and Magan dropped down from the lower limbs.

She rolled her eyes. "As if. I happened to be out here first and then you came stumbling along." Her crossbow had an arrow notched and her cap faced backward, a sure sign she'd come prepared to hunt.

Cass frowned. "Fine. Let's assume you're out here for the same reason I am. Doesn't explain why you followed me to the cottage?" She could've continued with her patrol.

Magan shrugged. "Maybe I wanted to see how you handled blonde, breathy, and brainless, especially since intelligent brunettes don't interest you."

Dammit, she needed to stop throwing that incident in his face. He'd been drunk and stupid and he'd inadvertently used her. His unintentional terrible timing and the way he'd hurt her notwithstanding, he didn't warrant the scathing treatment she threw at him all. The. Time.

"Look, Magan—"

She casually leveled her crossbow at his groin. "Don't insult me by apologizing. Again." She tilted her chin upward. "Your personal shortcomings do not interest me. And my curiosity is appeased. Blonde Ambition back there is welcome to your brand of lame romance." She swung the crossbow up and hoisted it on to her shoulder. "Have a lovely evening, Cass. Try not to get ensnared in any traps." She made a jump and grabbed a low-hanging limb, swung up into the trees then poked her head out from under the leaves. "And maybe ask yourself why neither of us heard a thing yet your new girlfriend claims she got chased by a nonexistent shifter … after being warned to stay out of the woods." She didn't wait for a comeback, nimbly moving through the branches and out of sight.

Cass balled his hands into fists. "Damn her. She's nothing but a sharp-tongued viper with a stupid red cap." He discounted her parting salvo.

If Siera didn't know the area, she wouldn't know which paths to stick to or what to look for as telltale signs the shifter were trying to encroach on the woods.

And maybe you're thinking with your dick again.

Cass really hated it when his internal voice sounded like Magan Drone.

I'm having a lot of fun writing this story. Cass did Magan wrong—not purposefully, but he did—and she takes every opportunity to poke him with a sharp, pointy stick.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Mirror of the Mist

Welcome 2022! Honestly, I'm hoping for great things in the next twelve months. After two years of questionable circumstances with family health issues and weird things happening, I'm kind of ready for some smoother sailing. Here's to making that happen.

Had a weirdly busy week with finalizing some work projects and clearing my desk and inbox for year-end stuff. Also had some running around that needed to get done.

Sort of a so-so week for television. I caught two episodes of Chicago Med and liked both. Sad to see Conor's life implode again and since I know what's coming for him, I'm hovering in the background wondering how bad things will get.

For a fun pick-me-up, I watched the Snoopy Presents: For Auld Lang Syne special and thoroughly enjoyed it. I might have to revisit all the Peanuts specials to keep the mood up.

Caught an episode of The Brokenwood Mysteries and, as usual, loved it. This show makes me happy. I'm always excited to see returning characters.

Enjoyed the holiday episode of Death in Paradise. Gotta say I really enjoyed it. I need to start from the very beginning and watch the whole series run to date.

Watched the first part of Silent Witness and I have a feeling it might be the last of Harry's episodes, which makes me sad but I'm also getting closer to episodes I haven't seen yet.

Caught the first episode of a Classic Who two-parter. I think this season has a couple of those.

Started a new series with The Alaska Triangle. Loved the first episode, mainly because it's like brand new information to me. There's so much stuff about the Bermuda Triangle but I haven't read or watched anything about the Alaska one.

Enjoyed two episodes of The Muppet Show. Mac Davis and Carol Burnett were the guest stars. Still hoping to get the movies watched in the near future.

Watched the first part of Fantasy Island's holiday episode and should finish up the second part this week. Really enjoyed it and I hope it goes in the direction I'm wishing for.

Caught another episode of Peak Practice. The new guy is really annoying me to no end. I'm not sure if they'll end up making him a decent guy or not, but at this point I don't actually care.

Viewed another MasterClass lesson with Bill Nye. Critical thinking and critical filtering was the topic and I loved it. Bill explains things so well.

Enjoyed the second episode of The Witcher. This season has been a bit of a roller coaster already. I feel awful for Yennifer and can't wait until she hooks up with Geralt and Ciri.

Caught an episode of Star Trek: Discovery and thoroughly enjoyed it. So far, the second season is excellent. Love Pike and Michael's interactions and I'm totally down with Tillie and Stamets having their weird issues from interactions with foreign entities.

Wow, I watched more than I thought I did. That's pretty much it for the update this week.

Tonight's post is from Mirror of the Mist, a modern twist of a fairy tale with some paranormal elements woven in.

Here's the mini-blurb:

An urban riff on Snow White, Cecelia Dumond, a black arts priestess, tasks Dys Hunter to assassinate her counterpart, a mystic oracle named Lyric Song. Dys goes undercover in a fight club to gain access to the powerful beauty. Little does he know, she's the one to lead him home, back to his rightful place as heir to his father's empire.

And a preview snippet…

Dys Hunter entered the chamber of his mistress, Cecelia Dumond, and stopped in front of her, bowing his head. "You called for me?" His mouth watered when she approached, the sheer fabric of her dress outlining the curve of her breasts and the flare of her hips.

Dare he hope…

Cecelia gave a nod. "I have a job for you, Hunter." She trailed her fingers from his bicep to his wrist.

His body immediately responded—as it always did when she touched him. He craved her, would do anything she asked, and come back begging for more. Anything to win favor and make her eyes gleam with pleasure over his accomplishments.

She grasped his hand and tugged him forward, leading him to the edge of her sanctuary. "I want you to find a way in to Thrune Ultimate Fighting Factory." She twined her fingers with his. "I have a dossier for you to review on the head of the company. She's your target."

Dys arched a brow. "What's the end goal?" He didn't normally do honey traps as Cecelia had other henchmen better suited to that kind of work.

She let go of his hand. "To take TUFF down and ruin any chance of it getting back up and running again." Her feet glided along the slate tiles to the huge floor-to-ceiling mirror that cast shadows on the powder gray walls. "There's more to the Thrune Ultimate than cage fighting matches. They've got a lucrative sideline that I want control over." Her head angled back. "The paranormal well runs deep within the ranks over there and I won't have that kind of competition." She turned back, her face a mask of anger.

Dys longed to give her serenity. "What do you need me to do?" He'd find a way to make whatever she required a reality.

Cecelia loosened the stays of her dress and let it fall to the floor. "First, I want you hard and hot for me then I'll outline your plan of attack…" She snapped her fingers and smiled when his clothes disappeared then she swept her arm to one side and directed him to her bed.

Dys didn't think about anything other than her and the bliss she created for the next two hours.

I'm having a lot of fun playing with the Snow White themes and changing things up a little.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Blondie and the Three Wizards

Welcome 2021! It's been raining like crazy the last few days, which is kind of soothing even if it's also a little dark and dreary.

I finished up a work project and had time to get somewhat organized for the new year. I have a few small things to get lined up but I'm ready to dive deep into 2021.

Had a very slow week in television. I caught a couple episodes of Blue Heelers and a couple episodes of Silent Witness. I also did a few year-end marathons and watched my usual classic TV and mystery shows.

And that's how I'm starting this year. Tonight's post is from Blondie and the Three Wizards, a sexy short that riffs on Goldilocks.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Xandra Blue, a mage adept, has to pick a new mentor from three extremely sexy wizards. All three have the skills and could make great partners, but the guys don't make it easy for her to choose.

And a preview snippet…

Xandra entered the common area of the residence hall and paused. "Whoa." She had to pick from the trio of gorgeousness scattered around the room?

Based on the file descriptions, she had a solid idea of who each man might be. And Chris spoke of them frequently. Bless him for making her a part of his life and acting as the big brother she never had. She could really use his advice for how to deal with this group of men, his friends and colleagues.

Moving further into the lounge space, she drew the attention of the men.

The one closest to her rose and gave her a nod. "Hello. You must be Xandra." He smoothed his shirt and stepped forward. "I'm Sam Guilliams." He thrust his palm toward her, blushing profusely.

She shook his hand. "Hi. Yes. I'm Xandra." She'd pegged him correctly.

Sam had a light blue button down shirt and meticulously creased khaki pants. His shoes were spotless, brown loafers with a highly buffed sheen. After his initial eagerness, he retreated back to the table, suddenly timid.

The second man let out a long, low whistle. "Well, hello there, Blondie." His gaze raked over her slowly. "Aren't you a beautiful sight?" He made a twirling motion with his finger, suggesting she turn around in a circle.

She almost followed the unvoiced order but caught herself. "You must be Heath. Chris warned me about you." She smiled, taking the heat out of her words and trying not to be sad at the loss of her mentor.

Heath chuckled. "Should've known." He also stuck his hand out and grasped hers. "Nice to meet you, Xandra." He let go and gave her a bow.

Her mood brightened again. Hard to stay when someone wild, aggressive, and brash made it impossible.

The final member of the trio lifted a hand. "I'm Dare. We're sorry to meet you under these circumstances, but glad to have you here." He moved forward. "Chris left some big shoes to fill." Putting a hand on her shoulder, he led her to the large table in the center of the room. "Let's get things rolling here and find out what you can do and how we can help." He pulled a chair out for her.

Two hours later, Xandra's head whirled with information. Sam listed out a full two pages of pros and cons if they worked together. His presentation showed he had an immaculate depth of knowledge and his skills were impeccable if not rigidly wielded.

Heath pretty much said he'd get her where she needed to be but they'd discuss her instruction over dinner. Then he put on a dazzling show of blindingly spectacular magick designed to impress. And break at least half a dozen rules. <No surprise there.> Heath probably had met a rule he wouldn't break.

Dare started out by asking her a question. "Where did you and Chris leave off?"

She appreciated the gesture. "We were in the middle of the third stage in level three." She wondered if the number three would be a thing for her.

Dare's eyes widened. "A difficult series of maneuvers. Did you have a specific agenda for continuing your lessons?" He conjured the Book of Magicks and opened it to level three.

Again, he'd impressed her. Not by a long monologue of how things should work or by showing off with crazy skills. Instead he asked and offered. Kind of refreshing.

Xandra pointed to the third—seriously, three again—maneuver. "Chris showed me this over and over and I still don't get it." If she didn't master the combination of visualizing and verbalizing, she'd never make it to the next level.

Dare nodded. "This is one of those skills that when it finally clicks, so many things will fall into place." He gave her his full attention and explained further. "The hardest part about the combination casts is subtlety. The vision has to be fully formed before the incantation is spoken or the result is nil." He tapped his finger on the page. "Try this. Visualize a large bouquet of flowers."

She closed her eyes and pictured lilacs.

"Now, hold that image and fill in the details. Make sure there's a vase, water, whatever else is needed for the bouquet to fully form."

Xandra let her mind fill with the suggestions. A green vase filled with water surrounded the blooms. A spray or two of greenery interspersed with the purple petals. She opened her mouth to utter the spell but Dare stopped her.

"Not yet. Hold the image and let it solidify. Don't speak the words until you fully envision the bouquet."

She waited a moment, until the image fully formed, then uttered her cast. "Bring it forth."

A large bouquet of lilacs appeared on the table, exactly how she'd pictured it in her mind.

Her mouth dropped open. "I can't believe it." Her gaze flew to Dare's. "That's incredible."

Heath rolled his eyes. "Look at Mr. Romance scoring big points." He smirked in Sam's direction. "Think we have a chance now?"

Sam shrugged. "Of course. Xandra can't make a snap decision about something this important."

Xandra gave a nod. "That's true." She directed her attention to Dare. "I do thank you though." She got up. "Can we do our individual meets tomorrow? The master sage wants a decision by the end of the week."

The men agreed and they set up times. Sam insisted on nine a.m. He only had that time available for the next day. Heath didn't want to meet until at least two in the afternoon. Apparently, he had a hot date and didn't plan to be up before noon. Dare asked her what time would work best for her. She suggested around five, which worked out well for him.

She gave another nod. "I'll look forward to seeing you all again." Turning, she exited the common area and fanned her face. "Man … not gonna be an easy decision."

I love putting a fun spin on classic fairytales and this story brings a lot of joy when writing.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Beast in the Belfry

I hope everyone had a terrific Thanksgiving, if celebrating. I had an oddly weird week. My youngest is in quarantine because she ended up being exposed to Covid at her university. Thankfully, she could go to my dad's house to isolate from the rest of us—he was out of town visiting my brother. She got her test on Friday and we should have the results by Wednesday—fingers crossed. She's restricting herself to an upstairs bedroom and bathroom and carefully disinfecting anything she touches. And, of course, she's keeping a mask on unless she's in the bedroom. Needless to say, she's not having a lot of fun, but we'd all rather be safe and limit other exposure.

The middle kiddo has GERD. He's been five days free from throwing up, thank whatever rules the universe—and a prescription for a strong acid reducer. Considering he spent anywhere from two to four hours at a time being sick for over ten days, he's feeling way better. He'll be changing a few things in his diet to hopefully help alleviate the symptoms even more.

Happy to say my oldest is doing just fine. He's getting ready to move out in the near future and looking forward to having more space.

Had a decent week watching television. I started off with a full arc of Classic Who and caught the full four-part Planet of Evil.

Started a new-to-me drama The Queens of Mystery. Thoroughly enjoyed the first episode and look forward to finishing up the second part.

Watched several more episodes of Silent Witness. I'm almost through with the third episode of season seven.

Also caught a full slate of Ovation mysteries throughout Thursday and Friday. Also watched quite a few Classic Perry Mason and The Saint episodes. I've been seeking out comfort television lately.

That's pretty much it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Beast in the Belfry, a novella that's a bit of a twist on Beauty and the Beast with a gender swap thrown in for fun.

Here's the mini-blurb:

A curse leaves artist Vittoria Blahm disfigured and marred for life. But Cal Gilligan sees the true woman under the scars and he falls hard for her when she saves him from plunging to his death. Vittoria can't quite believe anyone wants her and fears risking her heart to the possibility.

And a preview snippet…

Cal gazed out on the expanse of buildings on campus—an unshakable feeling of home settling over him. He swung a leg over the open window and settled on the sill. A sound caught his attention and he turned, taking in easels and paints, the couch, bed, and kitchenette. Shit! Did someone live here?

A wild-haired, screeching person flew out of the shadows, their hands raised for attack. Startled, Cal gasped when its—no, her—face came into view.

"Get out! Get out!" She grabbed his arm, tugging hard. "Leave. Now!" Fear filled her gaze but also anger.

Cal tried to duck out of the way, but in his haste he tottered sideways and went crashing through the open window. He skidded along the tiled roof, scrabbling to hold on. A firm grip on his wrist kept him from sliding—thank the universe—and gave him time to pull himself back up and into the tower. The woman scrambled away, cowering against the wall.

Cal stepped forward but didn't invade her personal space. "Thank you. You pretty much saved me from a horrible death." How he spoke calmly when his heart thundered, he'd never know.

She flicked her gaze to him but quickly glanced away. "You need to leave. This is my home." Her hands balled into fists.

Cal apologized. "I'm sorry. I didn't know." Something about her called to him.

The mission work his parents did exposed him to distraught, damaged people. This woman had deep-running scars on the inside. Probably more painful than the ones marring her face.

He slowly stuck out his hand, palm up. "Cal Gilligan. U of M is my alma mater, but I've been gone for several years." When she didn't respond, he continued. "I didn't mean to invade your space. I just accepted a position in the literature department and I used to come here all the time, especially during my final year." Silence. "Anyway, please accept my apology again. I'll leave now." He tucked his hand inside his pocket and crossed the floor, heading for the steps but stopped short when he passed the painting. "My God. This is incredible." He shot her a look. "Did you paint this?"

I'm very attached to this story. I love the challenge of putting a personal spin on a fairy tale and making it take place in a modern setting is a lot of fun.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Twilight Kingdom

Well, July is off to a roaring start. Daughter's graduation party is scheduled for today and I'm hoping we have a good turnout but also spaced out over the three hours of the party. I'm filling out my blog post early and getting it ready to post beforehand.

Had a semi-busy week between work and the party prep, but I did get some solid television watched. I started out with Ms. Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries. This is a rewatch for me but I love the show.

Also caught another arc of Classic Who. The four-part Ark in Space episodes. Not a bad group.

Watched another episode of The Witcher and, ouch, kind of a heartbreaker episode. I did totally love the dragons though. Looking forward to the next episode.

Caught two more season three episodes of Danger Man. I don't remember either of them so I enjoyed watching.

And that's it for this week. I should have more time next week to dive into some of the shows I'm behind on. And I have to watch the finale of Arrow. I'll have at least two boxes of tissues on hand. Just saying.

Tonight's post is from Twilight Kingdom, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt and puts a twist on a fairytale.

Nareen Rohm threw her head back and planted her hands on Jess Gillian's chest. "Ah, Jess! So good." Her fingers curled into her palms, no doubt to avoid drawing blood on his skin.
Jess grasped her hips and thrust harder. Nari connected telepathically with his mind and the level of intimacy deepened. How it is possible for her to make the sex even hotter?
He had no idea because he didn't have her inherent mind gift. Probably a good thing or they'd burn the palace down whenever they got passionate. Which happened often.
She nudged his mind with her skill. "I'm close … you need to focus here." Her mental tone held no rancor, more like a desire to find release together.
He responded, "See if this helps." His lips found and closed over her nipple and he swirled his tongue around the pebbled tip.
Nari gasped then moaned. "Perfect. Don't stop." Her inner walls tightened around his shaft.
The increased friction pushed him to the edge. "Come with me, Nari." A ball of tension uncoiled at the base of his spine and spread outward but he held back.
Her breath rasped out between her lips then hitched in her throat before a shudder tore through her. "Now, Jess. Please, now." Her thighs quivered around his torso.
His control slipped and he toppled over the brink, his palms cupping her ass until the orgasmic wave crested. She collapsed atop his chest but angled her head to meet his mouth. The kiss spun out, her tongue dueling with his. Sated and spent, it still didn't take long to have him half-hard again.
He started to shift out from under her, intent on having her again, but a loud pounding at his door stopped their progress. Tangled up in the sheets, he heaved a sigh. Nari chuckled and helped him get unwrapped.
The knocking grew louder.
"Dammit, Jess. I'm coming in. I know you're in there." His father's bellow came through loud and clear.
Jess slipped from the bed, wrapping the sheet around him. Nareen sat up, pulling the duvet over her naked form. Jantzen Gillian, House of Gillian consort, entered the room in all his regal glory.
He stopped and rolled his eyes. "You know this has to end soon, don't you?" He pinned Jess with a stern look. "In fact, it ends tonight. I'm announcing Jess's betrothal to Lavica Premier." He focused on Nareen. "You're my ward and I love you like a daughter, but you'll not be marrying my son." He turned to leave as if he didn't expect an argument.
He should know better.
Jess stalked to his father's side. "Uh-uh. No way. We've talked about this. I'm not getting married any time soon." He tightened his grip on the sheet. "It'll be my choice when I do."
Jantzen's face took on a red hue of anger. "You know why I want this match. I won't accept argument." He shot his gaze toward the bed. "You're lucky I've let this go on as long as I have."
Jess chafed at the constraints his father tried to put on him. "You don't have a say, Dad. Nari and I are grown. We can think for ourselves." Did they have to have this same conversation over and over?
Jantzen waved a hand. "You play at being lovers because you're bored."
Jess's temper snapped. "And why are we bored, Dad? Maybe because you keep us confined all the time? Only trot us out when you need us or let us travel for official events." On a roll, he plowed forward. "Why wouldn't we fall for each other? We've been at each other's sides for ten years. We know each other inside and out." He met Nari's gaze. "And guess what, Dad? We wouldn't have it any other way." Her wide smile confirmed her agreement.
Jantzen huffed out a harsh breath. "Since you're being unreasonable, I'll give you three days to get your head around the idea of your betrothal. Be prepared for the announcement." Not bothering to wait for a response, he exited the room.
Jess did a slow ten count to keep from following. Getting into a heated discussion wouldn't change his dad's mind. A cooler head might prevail … later.

I'm having a ton of fun putting some twists on the Sleeping Beauty trope. Jess and Nareen are very cool characters and interesting to get a handle on.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Only When They Blink

June kind of flew by in a rainy, chilly, dreary kind of way. I'm kind of looking forward to July. Not the heat so much, because it did finally get hot, but mainly in a new month clean slate deal.

Not a bad week for television. I'm staying somewhat caught up on everything. Started out with an episode of In the Dark and I'm happy Murphy and Dean are on speaking terms again. I also love how much Max messes up with her.

Watched another episode of Classic Roswell and enjoyed it a lot. I'd forgotten Michael became an emancipated minor in the first season. For some reason, I thought that happened later.

Caught Frankie Drake Mysteries and loved this one. I thoroughly enjoy seeing historical characters woven into the storyline. I also still want the detective and Mary to hookup but have a feeling Frankie is in his sights. Bummer.

Man… Riverdale truly embraces the batshit crazy. And I love it. I still want Hiram to go down hard. And Alice… oh, Alice. What the hell happened to you? I guess I better keep watching to find out.

Watched an episode of Arrow and it's one I've been looking forward to. I enjoy the future flashes almost as much as I loved the flashbacks. How awesome is having Nyssa train Mia? Seriously.

Caught the next episode of Krypton and didn't really see Brainiac possessing Seb coming. A cool twist though. I'm also quite enjoying having the multiple storylines unfold. So glad to see Lyta's mom back on the screen.

Painkiller Jane had a solid episode even for a clip show. Series television doesn't do those much anymore, which isn't a bad thing, but when they're done well, it's fun to watch.

Watched another episode of Durham County, the first season finale, and wow. Kudos to the actor who portrays Ray Prager, Sr. Watching him unravel was seriously compelling. I'm so curious about the actual… original… serial killer though. Maybe that line will be picked up again?

Started a new episode of Blue Heelers and I'm still enjoying this one.

Also watched the next episode of Midsomer Murders, which ended up being terrific. The mix of themes with Romeo and Juliet and Sleeping Beauty worked out better than expected.

Got two more episodes of Peter Gunn in and also two more of Classic Who. Not a bad way to round out the week.

And that's it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Only When They Blink, a novella that started with a writing community prompt to put a new twist on a fairy tale story.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Hale Easterson has fae blood running in his veins, but he won't follow the family old school traditions and mate by the designated age. He escapes to his private lake house to find an unconscious Winter Sorn, a beautiful woman, sprawled on his doorstep and realizes he may not be able to avoid what destiny has in store.

And a preview snippet…

Hale Easterson stood at the huge windows overlooking the gardens at the rear of the estate house. He didn't turn when the double arched doors opened and soft footfalls whished along the carpet. He continued facing the crystal clear glass with his arms behind his back.
His father stopped halfway into the room. "Why aren't you dressed? The cocktail hour starts in fifteen minutes."
Hale waited a heartbeat before answering. "I'm not staying tonight, Dad." He'd had more than enough of the hints, the females being parading in and out of the house, and the never-ending must-find-a-mate discussions.
Henrick Easterson reacted accordingly. "Tradition demands you settle on a female and start the next generation of the family. No Easterson waits until they're over thirty. You're not going to be the first." He made his way to Hale's spot by the windows, anger seething under the surface of his demeanor.
Hale rolled his eyes. "First of all, settle on a female is beyond insulting—to me and the potential woman I'd be spending the rest of my life with." He turned, facing his dad. "Second, the concept is barbaric and antiquated. Old school traditions aren't necessary anymore and I won't feed into the idea that a man has to be tied down to a singular future before he reaches his third decade." He glanced down at this jeans and battered boots, each well-worn and comfortable, fitting like a second skin. "I'm done with the whole thing. The invasion of my privacy, the wrecking of my solitude." He met his dad's gaze. "All of it." Including the stupid cocktail hours three nights a week.
Henrick's mouth thinned to a slash across his face. "You're being rash and untenable." He turned and strode to his desk.
Hale snorted. "No, I'm being me, Dad. I'm not a chip off the old block. I don't care how old the fae blood is in our lineage. I'll get mated on my own terms, thanks." And to someone of his choosing… not whomever his father found suitable.
His dad's head snapped up and an angry grunt escaped. "Bah! Your own terms. You don't know enough about yourself to dictate terms, Hale." He whipped a drawer open and pulled out three files. "Since you won't be participating in actively seeking a mate, I've taken the liberty of culling the prospects down to this trio." He tapped the top folder. "You can choose all three, but only one will carry the Easterson name and bear your children." Glancing up, he met Hale's gaze squarely.
Hale made a garbled choking sound. "I. Am. Not. You." He charged forward, sweeping the files off the desk. "I'm not marrying anyone you pick or parade in front of me. And I'm definitely not setting up for multiple mistresses… unlike you." Planting his hands on his hips, Hale all but dared his dad to keep the conversation going.
Henrick's shoulders slumped. "There's a lot you don't know, son. And you aren't interested in listening, but you need to. You can't outrun fate, Hale." He straightened and met Hale's gaze.
Hale shook his head. "I'm not running, Dad. I'm calmly walking away. Whatever fate has in store for me can find me at the lake house… where it's quiet and not filled with people I have nothing in common with." He made his way to the large French doors, placing his hand on the knob. "Do not send anyone over. I don't need a servant or a caretaker and I don't want your loyal minions snooping around in the one place I call a sanctuary. It doesn't belong to you and never will." He opened the door and stepped outside.
Henrick didn't follow but his words did. "No matter where you hide, fate will still find you."
Hale didn't break his stride. "Let it try."

This is a loosely based Princess and the Pea concept story. I love writing Hale and Winter and how neither wants to settle for fate ruling their destiny.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Mirror of the Mist

February 24, 2019

I'm finally pretty much through the worst of the respiratory nastiness. It's so nice to breathe semi-normal again. It's amazing what a difference it makes to take a deep breath on not end on a coughing spasm.

Not a bad week for television viewing. I finished up Endeavour's second episode of the fifth season. Also caught an episode of Murdoch Mysteries. I rather like where they've put things with Brackenreid.

Finished Luke Cage and, honestly? I liked where the series ended. I'd love to see more and I'm disappointed I won't be able to. The biggest drawback to all the streaming options now is how proprietary they're all becoming. Makes me a little sad.

Watched some Classic Roswell, third episode of the first season, which ended up dovetailing in an interesting way with the second episode of Roswell, New Mexico. Isobel using her powers to freak Maria out in the classic version played against Michael and Isobel using theirs to mess with Liz in the reboot. I'm invested way more than I thought I'd be in the new version. It's moving up the list of shows I don't want to miss.

Caught the Killjoys episode where they rescue the kids and blow up the RAC… and lose one of their own. Seriously, this show grabs me every time I watch. There's so much going on but the emotional beats always shine and don't get lost in the action. I'm looking forward to finishing out season four.

I'm through the halfway mark of Underbelly: Razor. The death toll keeps rising and the "Blood Alley" episode added to it with one of the major players going down. I'm loving the odd little beats of inner betrayal and turmoil, too.

On the sci-fi front, I watched an episode of Painkiller Jane and The Sarah Conner Chronicles. Each episode had a theme of painful past memories. Also caught an episode of Birds of Prey and had forgotten this one. I think I'm at the next to last episode before the series ends.

Finally, I watched the season one ender of Pensacola Wings of Gold. It's a to-be-continued-in-season-two thing and I guess I'll watch the first episode to see how they resolve getting rid of the entire team and starting from scratch. After that… eh… not sure I'll watch more.

That's pretty much it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Mirror of the Mist, a fun twist on a classic fairy tale.

Dys entered the office of Thrune's director of operations and stopped short. "No effing way. What the hell have I walked into here?"
Not at all what he expected. Based on the training facility, a stripped down setup with a half dozen sparring centers and functional, yet state-of-the-art, monitoring equipment lining the outer perimeter, Dys didn't foresee the haven of simple sophisticated elegance he'd been led into by the two guard dogs otherwise known as fighters on Thrune's roster.
Or the director to be more stunning than her name suggested. A direct gaze pinned Dys to the spot and carefully schooled features gave nothing away. Maybe he had the wrong person?
Dys quirked an eyebrow. "Lyric Song?" Did she have an assistant gatekeeper kind of thing… like several layers to get through before the big meet-up?
His information didn't cover the small details and his mission had one priority. Get the hell on the roster and dig deep for every secret Thrune Ultimate had.
The vision ignored him, directing a question to thug number one. "Nardo, did I miss a scheduled appointment on my calendar?" Her voice held a pleasant tone, but also mild censure.
Nardo shook his head. "No, Lyric. This is completely unscheduled." He jerked his chin toward Dys. "But he wouldn't be persuaded to leave and you don't like it when we use brute force to remove unwanted applicants from the premises."
Lyric's lips curved. "You're right, I don't. The risk of injury is too great to have my best fighters throwing down to prove a point." Her hands fussed with the items on her desk, rearranging them then putting them back where they were.
Thug number two added his observation. "He demanded an audition and we put him through the regular routine." His voice carried a smirk, which she acknowledged with a raised eyebrow.
If they considered what they put him through the regular routine, Dys would eat his boots. But he'd outlasted the five other guys on the roster. That bought him entrance into the inner sanctum.
Now he had to stay there and get his name added to the ticket.
Lyric shifted her gaze between the two current fighters, but addressed the second one. "Beltane, what's your assessment of… I'm sorry, does the wannabe have a name?" She glanced between the fighters again.
Nardo shuffled behind Dys and nudged him forward. "His name's Dys Hunter. That's all he'd give us."
Lyric got up and came around the desk, propping a hip on the edge.
Beltane moved forward and handed Lyric a clipboard. "He's got skill. It's raw and unchecked, but he should be able to hold his own in the areas I checked off."
Lyric took several long moments and reviewed the assessment. Dys used the opportunity to study the woman who ran the training facility. Not for the first time, Dys wanted to know why Cecelia had such a hard-on for bringing Lyric down. She didn't own the place only acted as the director for the man behind the business.
That said, Dys followed orders and did whatever Cecelia asked of him. Basically, he'd do anything for a taste of her, to bask in her power and swim in a pool of lust with her. The things Cecelia could do with her mouth alone kept Dys's dick in a perpetual hard state.
But… Lyric Song's quiet attractiveness rivaled Cecelia's chiseled beauty. A comparison of contrasts, the women couldn't be more different. Cecelia's diminutive stature made her appearance delicate and ethereal. Lyric had a whole hot, curvaceous thing going on. Killer legs, feet clad in black stilettos, brought her already impressive height close to his. Cecelia demanded attention with barely there, gauzy, and diaphanous clothing that left little to the imagination. Lyric's fitted and tailored attire included a skirt, blouse, and jacket combo that covered all the good bits yet hinted at the glory underneath and encouraged a man to envision unwrapping the delectable body hidden by the pretty packaging. Dys's brain sifted through an X-rated preview before the clearing of Lyric's throat made him rein in the steamy visual.
He met her gaze, keeping his steady and certain. She narrowed her eyes, leaving him with no doubt she'd pretty much guessed where his thoughts had been. He wouldn't apologize, but he would take care to be less obvious in the future.
Lyric straightened and went back behind the desk. "Well, Mr. Hunter, it appears you've passed the preliminary qualifications and look good on paper." She set the clipboard aside and started fussing with the tea service on the cart next to her. "Let's see how you do with a verbal interview over tea." A tray filled with hearty sandwiches appeared from the middle section appeared from an alcove and she set it out on the desk. "Would you care to join me for that or would you like to leave now?"

I'm thoroughly enjoying putting my spin on Snow White. It's fun to twist things a little and see what kind of story will appear.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!
