Sunday Snippet: It's Not What They Think

Well, hello, October! This is one of my favorite months. The weather usually gets cooler.
The leaves start changing. And Halloween is just around the corner! It also means the holiday season is looming fast and furiously. Ugh. I'm not ready this year. LOL

Rough week with work and unexpected scheduling conflicts. I did get to watch some good television though. Caught the third episode of Strike Back's fifth season and had a surprise visit in the form of pictures from Stonebridge and Scott. I'm definitely intrigued! I also think I finally made the connection I needed to make. I'm slow sometimes.

The Last Ship seriously keeps me on the edge of my seat. I'm so sad and angry over a certain loss, but I totally called plot point even if it's a little disappointing. Caught the finale of Chicago Fire just in time for the new season to begin. I'll be behind per usual, but I'm glad I got to watch it.

Luke Cage is pulling some interesting things out of the woodwork. I'll admit I'm a little confused with where they're planning to take this season. That said, I love this show. And there's no Trish to really muck things up. Just saying.

Passionflix's Driven is so good. I watched the fourth episode and thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't wait for the new holiday movie they have planned.

Murdoch Mysteries started their twelfth season with a fun episode. I always look forward to this series and the new twists and turns Murdoch and Julia and the rest of the cast face.

Caught a few more episodes of Peter Gunn's first season. The noir feel of this show never fails to make me happy. Penny Dreadful is seriously creepy sometimes and I'm kind of on the fence about whether I like it or not. LOL

Caught another episode of The Dresden Files and it was one I remembered liking a lot when it originally aired.

Rounding things out for the week, I caught an episode of Killjoys and love where things are going. I'll be so sad to see this show end next season.

I started the final episode of Canal Road and didn't have the chance to finish it yet. It's on the agenda for tomorrow.

That's it for television this week. Tonight's post is from It's Not What They Think, a novella that started with a writing community prompt of "I know my wife". The idea is to write a scene or a story about an unknown side to a spouse.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Meaghan Wrath goes on the warpath, losing her hard won control over her powers and wreaking havoc on unsuspecting clan members. She's setting a crappy example, but her husband, Vinnie Grayson, walks a fine line by not reprimanding her. Her need let off steam and be rebellious never lasts long—usually the week leading up to the full moon—and a demand to stop will only land her on the hot seat—almost literally.

And a preview snippet…

Meghan Wrath walked through the Mage Academy lights flickering whenever she strode past. She paused and the illumination grew bright. When she moved away, dim shadows followed.
She sighed. "Dammit. Not again." Third or fourth month is a row she'd had weird stuff happen with her powers.
Last month, she had the same experience, but the intensity didn't surge under her skin as much.
Her fingers almost crackled with energy. Tucking her hands in her pockets, she made her way to the residential quarters and quickly took the stairs down to her level. After entering her apartment, she shut the door and expelled a relieved breath.
Bringing her palms in front of her, she wiggled her fingers. Every light in the room blinked on. Two bulbs burst, but the rest stayed brightly lit.
Her shoulders slumped. "Shit. Why is this happening to me?" Curling her fingers into her palms, she did a long, slow count to ten.
The door opened behind her and she jumped, blowing out two more lamps.
Her best friend, Mathias Benson, stopped short just inside the room. "Again?" He shook his head and moved to her side.
Meghan nodded. "Same as last month, but it's worse. The lights in the Fouster Hall went crazy when I walked by." She moved to sit on the couch. "And before that, the cupboard doors in the classroom popped open and the work aprons danced out and took a spin around the room before I got it under control." Slumping down, she leaned her head against the cushion. "Freaked everyone out and I left the class with Vinnie in charge." Her husband would no doubt cobble some kind of excuse together for the orientation class.
Mathias sat next to her. "Have you looked into why this happens close to the full moon?" He propped his feet up on the oversized trunk in front of the sofa.
Meghan shot him a sideways glance. "What are you talking about?" And why hadn't she caught the timing?
Mathias shrugged. "Just something Vin and I were discussing last month when you went haywire." He met her gaze. "You seem to get off kilter around the waxing gibbous phase of the moon then get it together once the full moon has passed."
Meghan tamped down a flash of anger. She didn't want to set anything on fire. She couldn't keep the curtains from billowing outward before settling back against the window frame.
She took a deep, calming breath before responding to Mathias. "Let me get this straight. My husband talked to you about a theory but mentioned nothing to me?" There were times she hated sharing a best friend with Vinnie.
Mathias held his hands up. "Well, yeah." He angled toward her, putting an arm on the back of the couch. "Not to leave you out, Meghan. That's not why we were talking about it. He's getting crap every time you do something weird and it's happening like clockwork lately." His brow rose, daring her to refute the truth.
She couldn't. Dammit. Didn't mean she liked Vinnie and Mathias playing shrink behind her back.
Mathias softened his voice. "Look, sometimes it helps to work stuff out in a non-hostile environment." Meaning if they included her, something might go up in flames?
Probably. And the idea pissed her off. She should be part of solving her problem.
She got pissy with Mathias. "I don't see why everyone goes to him. I'm the one who's pushing the limit. Even if I can't control when it happens." The energy bursts weren't exactly conscious moves on her part.
And usually happened at the worst possible times. Unfortunately.
Mathias snorted. "You're kidding, right?"
She sighed. "Yeah, yeah. I need to figure this out. Or Vin's going to get caught in the crossfire." More so than usual.
Mathias's lips curved in a half-smile. "Not like he hasn't been before. He's comfortable sitting on the powder keg most of the time."
Meghan lifted a shoulder. "Yeah, well, we'll see how long that lasts, especially if I keep having these magickal flashovers." The moon phase thing needed a thorough examination.
Which she'd get started on ASAP. But not here where she lived with Vinnie. She'd ask for some time in the catacombs, maybe try a dreamscape spell and record the visions.
Mathias got up. "Hang in there, Meghan." He started for the door. "You know Vinnie and I will love you no matter what. Even if you burn the place down all around us."
Meghan rolled her eyes and tossed one of the throw pillows at him.
But he'd said exactly what she needed to hear. No matter what happened, her husband and their best friend would stick by her side.

This story went in a direction I didn't expect and I love it! Here's hoping I can get it finished up and out into the world.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: It's Not What They Think

A quick break from discussing television to talk about the crazy weather in Ohio. Okay, make that the weird weather everywhere. If you're experiencing it, let me know. LOL

Finally watched The Abominable Bride and thoroughly enjoyed. I loved the back and forth and I'll leave it there so I don't spoil anything. But I'm looking forward to seeing a new season, whenever that might be.

Excited to have my shows return but also so busy I'm struggling to keep the dates straight. LOL Nothing like having a ton work to plow through. J I did catch the winter premiere of Teen Wolf and I'm glad to have that bit of crazy to look forward to each week, especially with a familiar face returning.

Tonight's post is from It's Not What They Think, a novella where my main characters have to get creative to help my heroine control her magical powers.

Meghan blinked, shaking her head. "I just told you I set an elderman's robes on fire and you're what? Planning a weekend getaway?" Did he not realize how close to the line—no, how far over the line—she'd gone.
Vinnie frowned. "No. I don't plan for us to go anywhere or leave the compound." He caught up. "Oh, right. Don't worry about Vice. I'll smooth things over." He stepped away, moving to the desk and grabbing the phone. "Seriously, Meghan, clear your schedule for the next seventy-two hours, okay." Punching in a series of numbers, he only waited a moment before speaking. "Elderman Vice? Yeah, yeah, I know… No… About that… Yes, sir. I'm aware she's been escalating… No, it won't happen again. In fact, she's agreed to stay in residence until the full moon passes. Yes… I'm going to be here with her… No, she won't leave and yes, I give you my personal guarantee. Right. Yes. Thank you." He hung up the phone and met her gaze. "Man, he's pissed." His lips quirked.
Meghan arched a brow. "And you're amused? Are you stupid? Or just crazy?" After the last month with her, he could actually be both.
Vinnie snorted. "I'm neither. In fact, I'm pretty damned intelligent." He lifted a shoulder. "Or at least our best friend is."
Meghan tilted her head to one side. "Mathias? Really?" A snort escaped. "Oh, please, I can't wait to hear his latest pearl of wisdom." Moving forward, she stepped into Vinnie's personal space. "Lay it one me."
Vinnie flashed a grin. "Sex." His hands grasped her hips. "For the next three days." Waggling his eyebrows, he leaned in, running his lips along her jawline.
Meghan barked out a laugh. "See… there's a reason we like him." She wrapped her arms around Vinnie. "But seriously? Aren't you the least bit concerned I'll bring more pain than pleasure?" With her power being at the apex, she didn't always have the control she needed.
Vinnie nipped at her earlobe. "Nope. Because the way I figure things, if I keep you in orgasmic bliss, you'll be too sated to do much damage." His hands tugged the hem of her shirt upward and he dropped to his knees, licking a wet trail from her waistband to the underside of her bra.
The idea had merit. If she combined magick with sex, her energy levels would dissipate. In theory, a workable solution and one she could totally get behind.
Running her fingers through Vinnie's short, cropped hair, she nudged his head back. "In that case… you'd better get busy and take the edge off before we really get down to business."
A wolfish smile twisted his lips and he flicked his gaze from her belly to the floor. Her yoga pants pooled at her feet and he rose, dragging her shirt up and over her head. She got rid of her bra with a quick, muttered incantation.
Vinnie stepped back, his gaze sweeping over her, lingering on her hot spots—caressing her breasts and warming the juncture between her thighs. He snapped his fingers and stood naked before her, his erect cock proudly jutting out. Crooking his finger, he motioned her forward and her feet carried her willingly, stopping when the head of his dick brushed against her heated skin.
Reaching out, Vinnie cupped her ass with one hand, hauling her closer. "I think we'll need at least two rounds to take the edge off, yeah?" He urged her up onto her toes and worked fisted his erection, working it along her folds before sliding home in a single, smooth thrust.
A satisfied hum rumbled in her chest and she wrapped her legs around his waist. "Sounds about right to me." Head dropping back, she rocked her hips against his groin.
Great mage, she loved her husband.

The sages are being somewhat tight-lipped with this one. They've got the general idea of where they're going to take me, but they're being stingy with the big details.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: It's Not What They Think

January 12, 2014

Greetings!

Well, off to a wacky weather start to the new year. Minus single digit degrees to fifty within forty-eight hours. Welcome to Ohio. LOL

TV shows are back this week, or at least most of them are. Have to wait until February for The Walking Dead, and April for Orphan Black.

But… Banshee returned Friday and, as usual, didn't disappoint. I honestly have no idea why the show is one of my must sees, but it totally is. And, holy crap, they jam a lot into a single hour, less than, actually. Caught Helix on Syfy, and it sufficiently creeped me out enough to keep watching. Lost Girl comes back on Monday, and I'm definitely up for some Bitten, which looks kind of awesome. Almost Human was pretty great, too.

Sleepy Hollow and Arrow return this week. I can't wait!! Looking for to The Tomorrow People, too.

Tonight's post is from the tentatively titled, It's Not What They Think, a novella with magic and the mayhem it causes when it can't be released. J

Here's the tagline:

Meaghan Wrath goes on the warpath, setting up fellow clan members for ridiculous pranks. She's setting a crappy example, but her husband, Vinnie Grayson, walks a fine line by not reprimanding her. Her need let off steam and be rebellious never lasts long, and a demand to stop will only land her on the hot seat—almost literally.

And a preview snippet…

Vinnie dropped down onto sectional. "It's not what they think. That I'll have to face Meaghan's wrath, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, and that she'll kick my ass if I try to stop the pranks." He shot Mathias a glance. "I know my wife. The stupid shit she's pulling is her way of letting off steam and being rebellious without having to disobey orders."
Mathias snorted. "Right, and making her stop, or worse, ordering her to, would put you in a really sticky position."
Vinnie sighed. "Well, yeah." He glanced up and met Mathi's gaze. "Look, I walk a fine line. Meaghan wields incredible power, if she doesn't let go and release it, she overloads. And right now, I'd rather suffer through bitching and complaining about stupid stunts than watch her go completely out of control."
Mathias shuddered. "Okay, that's a good point." He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "But Vinnie, man, the solution is right in front of you."
Vinnie cocked his head. "Then share it, my friend, because I'm tired of getting called into the elder chambers to explain why my wife is acting like a twelve-year-old on their first magic weekend."
Mathias chuckled. "My answer involves a much more grown up resolution." He shot a quick glance toward Vinnie's sleeping area. "If she's got power to burn, why shouldn't you benefit from it?"
The simplistic brilliance hit Vinnie like one of Meaghan's lightning bolts. Why the hell hadn't he thought of it? Maybe because he spent all of his recent time putting out the fires, sometimes literally, Meaghan started.
He dropped his head, thumping it on the back of the couch.
Mathias slapped Vinnie's shoulder. "Yeah, now he gets it. Think of the possibilities, Vin. Conjuring items for role playing, spells and incantations for some kinky bondage, and my own personal favorite—levitation sex." Mathias stood and started for the door.
Vinnie jumped up. "Wait. You had sex while levitating?"
Mathias turned. "Vinnie, I once knew a girl with half Meaghan's skill and she rode me to three midair orgasms." He lifted a brow. "Imagine what your wife could do."
Heated, vivid images filled Vinnie's head and he slowly sank back down onto the sectional.
Mathias laughed and opened the door. "Exactly, my man, exactly. I better not see you for at least three days." He waggled his eyebrows and exited, passing Meghan on her way in.
She burst through the door and stopped short. "Uh, Vin, you've gotta do something. I just singed Elderman Vice's robes." She pushed the heavy oak closed and paced the floor. "Seriously, I'm losing it. The guy walked by, radiating irritation—at me—and poof! His hem caught fire. I just know they're going to call you in again, and I'm sorry, but—"
Vinnie waved off her apology.
He got up and crossed their living space, wrapping her in his arms. "Meaghan, my love, I think I have just the thing to keep you from causing any more trouble." He leaned back and met her gaze. "What're your plans for the next three days?"

Vinnie's got his hands full, but what's a guy supposed to do, right? Meaghan is going to have a new found respect for her handsome husband very soon. J

That's it for this week.

Cheers!
