Sunday Snippet: Whipped Cream and Chocolate Dreams

September has ushered in yo-yo weather. We had record low overnight temperatures this past week and we're supposed to end up with record high temperatures this week. My sinuses are not happy right now.

I'm still finishing up the copy edit for the extended project and should have it ready this week. I'm looking forward to starting a new project in the next week or so. September is shaping up to be a busy month and that makes me happy.

Didn't have a bad week of viewing. I got a lot of episodes in and finished up a series, which means I get to start a new one this week. I have no idea what that will be yet, but probably a mystery.

I caught two episodes of Death in Paradise. One I remember seeing before and the other new to me. This is why I love going back and watching in chronological order.

Also watched two episodes of Fantasy Island. Enjoyed both for the fantasy aspect. Did not enjoy the angst factor. As usual, you take a perfectly good couple and break them up for a stupid reason. Depending on how the next few episodes go, I'm probably done with this show.

Enjoyed two episodes of The Batman. Bane and Catwoman were introduced and the Catwoman episode was a lot of fun. The Bane episode wasn't bad either.

Caught two episodes of Classic Rugrats. The four vignettes were all ones I'd remembered and pretty fun to watch again.

Finished up the Agatha Christie Hour and enjoyed the final episode. I love mistaken identity hijinks and this episode had a splashy party to boot. So much fun.

Caught the second half of Suspects and thoroughly enjoyed watching the team unravel the tangled web of who did it. Also kind of great to get some insight into the characters' personal lives.

Finally watched the season nine finale of Peak Practice. It was as hard as I thought it would be. I'm not looking forward to Andrew's personal life being a main focus of season ten, but I'll still be watching.

Finished the second half of Silent Witness. This one ended up being very twisty and I like that. Looking forward to the next two-parter. Might get more insight into Jack's character.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Whipped Cream and Chocolate Dreams, a novella where a dream tender and cupid have a running challenge that brings three characters together.

Here's the miniblurb:

Nita, Deacon, and Callen fall victim to Morpho, the Dream Tender, who plants vivid imagery in their minds while they slumber. When the trio wakes up primed and ready for action, they try to fight the erotic pull, but fail.

And a preview snippet…

Deacon stayed outside, chilling on the hammock, after Cal and Nita went in to stream a movie. "I've seen the entire Marvelverse at least twice." Tipping his bottle to his mouth, he finished off the remaining cider.

He loved having Nita back in their small beach town. Growing up, he'd looked forward to when she'd arrive on Memorial Day weekend to spend the summer with her gram. She started coming their seventh-grade year and somehow brought Deke and Callen into her circle from their initial meeting in the ice cream parlor. Being year rounders, he and Cal went to the same school, but they rarely hung out together.

Until she arrived that first summer.

Once Nita showed up, she insisted the first two people she met had to stroll the beach in the mornings with her—before it got crowded and they had to start working their summer jobs. For a decade, the trio spent time together for three months each year during high school and college. And Cal became Deke's best friend.

The past three years, Nita couldn't make it for more than a week or two. She landed a job managing a chain of boutiques as soon as she graduated from her university.

Deke tsked. "Then her gram got sick." An aggressive form of cancer took her life within six months of being diagnosed.

Nita came down with her parents for the funeral. He and Cal attended but they had work commitments. Deke worked for the local fire department and Cal's computer science degree made him an in-demand consultant. When she called to say she'd be moving down full-time, he and Cal met to coordinate their schedules.

And talk about Nita. Both cared for her but wouldn't compete with each other. If she wanted one, she'd let them know. Deke had a thing for her going way back. He dated but not seriously. Cal ended a two-year relationship right after college and only did casual hookups since then.

Shaking his head, he got up and put his bottle in the recycling bin. "Time to call it a night. Thoughts are getting a little too cozy right now." He headed inside to find his bed.

I'm having a lot of fun with this story. This trio of friends is a joy to write and I love playing with the dynamic between them.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: The Truth Hurts

Greetings! It's been another busy week and I'm still excited about my ongoing projects. They're completely different genres and it's fun to have that variety while working.

Somewhat limited viewing week again. I've been in a place where background noise is more distracting than helpful, which occasionally happens. I notice it more on day when I didn't get solid sleep the night before.

I did catch most of Pennyworth. I have the last act of the episode to watch. This show is dark in all the ways I like shows to be. And I love getting to see Alfred actually grieve. And having Ripper be the catalyst that pulls him out is kind of a master stroke. Such a great show!

Also continued my Battlestar Galactica rewatch. We started season two and the first ten episodes are so terrific. The second half of the season is also excellent, but I remember so much about those first ten.

That's pretty much it for the life update. I am hoping to get some gardening in this week so stay tuned.

Tonight's post is from The Truth Hurts, a novella that brings a couple back together after one receives bad news.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Mardi Darr discovers her current lover is an enemy agent with an enchanted chip in his head. She gives the okay for a risky surgery, and it lands him in a submersion chamber with no brain activity. Heth Santiago is responsible for Mardi being with Staz and he needs to help Mardi accept the truth … even though it hurts like a bitch.

And a preview snippet…

Halfway through the second bottle of Abernath, Mardi finally chewed through her chaotic feelings. "I'm not pissed about the surgery, you know. I enjoyed Staz's company, and he was there when I needed someone, but … I ruined a man's life." And she loved Heth.

Always would—even if the stupid man thought she didn't know her own mind.

Heth set his empty glass aside. "Hence the reason you're here, drinking to soothe the hurt." He gave a nod of understanding. "What do you want to do after getting stupid drunk?" Leaning back in his chair, he arched his brows.

She shrugged. "Not sure, but planning revenge sounds pretty good." She'd take on every sorcerer on the planet if she could.

Heth grunted. "Want some help?" He straightened and poured another shot.

She nearly choked on her surprise. "Why? You don't even like Staz." A fact he'd made clear more than once.

Heth leaned in close. "Liking him has nothing to do with wanting to help. I love you."

Her mouth dropped open. "You can't say that to me. Not now." She shook her head, even while she wanted to bask in his words.

Heth downed his shot. "Yeah, my timing sucks. But I realized how stupid I was right after you got together with Staz." He pinned her with his gaze. "And I wouldn't get in the way of what you two had going on."

She huffed out a breath. "Which turned out to be nothing. Or did you miss the part where they used him as a pawn?" Somehow that fact did nothing to ease her guilt.

Heth shook his head. "I definitely didn't miss that part. But Staz being a pawn rests on my shoulders as much as yours."

Because he walked away. He didn't have to say the words. His meaning came through every with crystal clarity.

Her shoulders slumped. "I want to hate you so much right now." But she'd never be able to.

Heth inclined his chin. "I know. And I don't blame you. But I will help you seek justice for Staz. I owe both of you that much." He nudged the Abernath toward her.

She shoved the bottle aside. "You know what? I'm gonna put everything on the table here. We will get payback for Staz. But we can't do that until you and I work out your issues with us being a couple." She settled back. "So start talking."

This story is making me happy. I like messy characters because they're fun to write.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: The Souvenir

Well, February has so far been a crazy mix of freezing, in the teens temperatures and mild almost spring-like weather. Mother Nature is in a mercurial mood right now and it's wild trying to figure out how to dress for the day. I miss being able to get my winter stuff out and not having to bother with warm-weather clothes for a couple of months.

Had a busy week with work projects and have a couple more lined up in the near future. I'm kind of happy they're all different types of manuscripts and none are in the same stage of editing.

Had a slow week of television. I'm still working to get everything from the old PC to the new one and ran into another snag with trying to set up my email accounts. Spent a large portion of the week trying to figure that out and get it working. Bleh.

I did catch the pilot episode of Pennyworth and really enjoyed it. I've heard great things and now that I know season three is the end, I'm going to attempt to watch before it disappears too.

I also watched the second part of the Battlestar Galactica miniseries with one of my friends. I'm so excited to have this rewatch party to look forward to each week. We'll be trying two episodes a week starting with season one.

Got a start on the latest season of Midsomer Murders. Barely got through the opening credits so I'll have to finish up this week.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from The Souvenir, a novella that starts a four-book series that has yet to be named.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Melick Traynor and Ramona Peartry, childhood friends and top students in the Academy of Light, compete for prominence in their respective classes. But when Melick throws out a challenge, Ramona takes an insane risk to prove him wrong and winds up tangling with the dragon plaguing campus grounds.

And a preview snippet…

Melick Traynor stormed into the mage superior's tower. "You can't call off the search for Ramona." He risked much, voicing his opinion, but the mage superior would at least let him vent.

The man happened to be his grandfather.

Melick stopped in front of Afton Traynor's large table. "We can't give up on her." Missing for most of the day, the hour approached midnight when the cumbersome beast liked to plague the campus with its ire. No one not on patrol should be out alone. And Ramona didn't report in, which didn't necessarily mean anything, but the weird vibe Melick couldn't shake said otherwise.

He'd been blessedly happy for the session break because she'd have something else to focus on like figuring out if she wanted to stay in dorms or move to a residential cottage. The bane of his existence, Ramona loved nothing more than pulling pranks, stunts, and practical jokes whenever he'd be close at hand. And usually on the receiving end of more than a few.

He'd gladly forgive every single happenstance if they found her. Melick didn't realize how much he'd grown to care about her until he no longer had her underfoot.

The mage superior glanced up, his eyes stern. "Do you believe I want to?" He unclasped his hands and indicated Melick should sit.

Melick didn't. Instead, he paced. How did he express how important Ramona had become? Afton cared deeply, of course he would. Ramona's grandfather had been Afton's best friend. When he passed on, the elder Traynor took on the role of surrogate keeper.

"It's session break and we're spread too thin to keep this up." Afton rose and gathered his robes, draping them like a mantle over his shoulders. "We must be vigilant and guard against more attacks."

He slowly walked around his table and Melick noticed how tired his grandfather appeared.

Afton stopped by the tower window, gazing out at the grounds below. "Ramona is capable. Very much so. Her natural ability surpasses many of the upper level ranks." He angled his head to shoot Melick a knowing look. "You, of all people, know this."

Melick did. But she lacked control, especially when it came to physical manifestations and that usually led to trouble. And Grandfather is well aware of that.

Melick heaved a sigh. "I won't give up on her." He met the older man's gaze. "No one can stop me from searching on my own time."

The no one Melick referred to was Master Sawitch. His grandfather's oldest living friend and number two in the Academy of Light echelon. Sawitch had a major problem with Ramona. They butted heads over everything from the pranks she played to his rigid adherence to the Book of Lumina. Ramona thought set boundaries should be pushed against and Sawitch believed the opposite.

Their opposing point of views made for some interesting debates in open forum.

And Ramona got away with pushing the envelope due to her status as the ward of the mage superior. Afton doted on Ramona, much to Sawitch's consternation. Melick quite enjoyed the drama centered on the dynamics when they played out, especially when not directed at him.

I'm still trying to decide if this will be an Academy of Light story or if I'll rename the place of study, but Melick and Ramona don't care as long as they're front and center.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Protect the Target

Kind of a weird week in flux. I keep getting a lot of stuff done but more things get added to the plate. Not complaining, the timing is just odd.

Had a solid week of viewing. I'm kind of jammed schedule-wise this upcoming week so I'm hoping to stay on my semi-normal schedule by watching ahead a little.

Got to watch two episodes of The Snoopy Show. This season seems a little less seasonal and I'm okay with that.

Started the new season of The Brokenwood Mysteries. As usual, an excellent premiere episode. Familiar faces with the secondary characters, which I completely love.

Finished up the second half of a two-part Silent Witness and started a new episode. This season is off to a roaring start with good episodes.

Watched the final episode of a Classic Who arc and should be starting a new multipart one this week. Hoping the daleks are gone for a bit.

Caught another episode of Most Terrifying Places in America. This one focused on cursed towns and ended up being more interesting than I anticipated.

I started Moon Knight and thoroughly enjoyed the first episode. My brother highly recommended the series and I'm excited to talk about it with him.

Watched an episode of The Hardy Boys and the danger is amping up. My one complaint for this season would be how the Fenton storyline is playing out. I'm also very iffy on the whole Joe plot points. I'm hoping there's a good explanation for why he's being a little butt.

Enjoyed an episode of Peak Practice. I have a feeling the next episode might have a lingering issue left over from this one.

Caught another MasterClass lesson with Roxane Gay. She talked about her writing tools and I got several good ideas from her.

Got the first episode The Babysitter's Club season two in and enjoyed it. This is a charming show and I'm sorry there's not going to be another season after this one.

Watched an episode of The Ready Room. The interview with Sonequa Martin-Green ended up being so terrific.

Enjoyed an episode of Chicago Med. I'm kind of wondering what's going on with April. I think the writers sell her short and that makes me sad because I love her character.

Finished up Tangled, a Passionflix original. I'll be starting season three of Driven this week and I'm looking forward to it.

I've started a rewatch of Batman: the Animated Series. I'll probably be doing a bunch of DC Comics shows, specifically Titans and Doom Patrol, in the near future. Again, my brother highly recommended so I'm giving them a whirl. But I have to start with my all-time fave, which is Batman: TAS.

Started a new-to-me series with the Agatha Christie Hour. The first episode ended up being enjoyable so I'll continue on. Looking forward to another episode.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Protect the Target, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Noya Vix is a walking target with a lot of magical factions coming after her, the most persistent being Lenj Gottman, who wants to exploit her precognitive ability. Booth Wanderlux is her number one protector, but he's got issues with keeping Noya out of harm's way because she refuses to lay low until Lenj is caught.

And a preview snippet…

Booth woke up to a cool hand ghosting over his thigh to land on his hip very close to his groin. His lips curved and he turned, letting the palm make contact with his dick. Noya finally decided to come to bed.

He let out a sigh. "'Bout time you joined me, Noya." Fingers cupped his erection.

A low, sultry voice answered. "Sorry, lover, if I'd known you were waiting, I'd have been here a lot sooner."

His eyes blinked open to find someone definitely not Noya grasping his cock.

He shoved her away and scrambled off the bed. "Who. The fuck. Are you?" He flipped the lamp on.

Red hair, pale, creamy skin, and green eyes filled his vision. A silky gown clung to her curves and she gazed upward with arched brows. She moved with feline grace, sitting up and scooting to the edge of the bed.

She tilted her head to one side. "Name's Shara Hawthorn. I had no idea the room was occupied when I came in." Her mouth curled into an appreciative grin. "When I found you, I thought providence answered my latest wish." Her gaze did a slow once-over before meeting his again.

Booth narrowed his eyes. Her voice would lure men to do her bidding. But something about her … didn't ring true.

He moved forward, placing his knee on the mattress. She didn't move except to lower her head slightly. Leaning in, he caught the aroma of pear, sandalwood, and lavender—Noya's signature scent.

Cupping her chin, he lifted her face to the light. "What are you playing at, Noya?" He brushed his thumb over her cheekbone, encountering a high, smooth surface instead of the angular, prominent jut.

Her shoulder slumped. "Dammit to hell. What gave me away?" She eased away from him and slid off the bed.

He huffed out a breath. "Fragrance. You're wearing your usual." If not for that, he would have been completely fooled. "Nice job on the voice." He gave her a long perusal. "And … everything else." Slowly moving forward, he made a circle around her. "Pretty damn amazing, actually."

She lifted her chin. "Shit, I should've thought to change the scent. But otherwise, good to hear. Because I'm not going to be left behind." Her hands landed on her hips.

Booth gently batted them away and drew her close. "No, didn't think you would be." His mouth grazed her jawline. "And neither did Starkey. He wanted you to be creative and you definitely went above and beyond." His fingers trailed upward, sliding under the straps of her gown to nudge them off her shoulders.

Noya shook her head. "Should've known. No wonder Lorna didn't bat an eye when I told her what I wanted to do." She dropped her arms and let the gown fall to the floor.

Booth licked his lips. "This is gonna be an experience, I can already tell. I mean you're you … but you're not." The difference in skin tone and the hair and eyes proved to be jarring, but also a turn-on.

Noya traced a finger down his chest, stopping at his waistband where his boxers concealed the long, hard length of his dick. "Something tells me it's not going to be a bad one." She nudged the briefs down then grasped his hard-on.

Booth scooped her up and deposited her on the bed. "Let's find out…"

I'm having a lot of fun writing this one. Noya and Booth always find creative ways to work their issues out.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Price Paid

Crazy week with projects finishing up and new ones starting. I love the variety of editing work I have right now.

Pretty decent week of television. I got caught up and back on my regular schedule for the most part. I have a few new recommendations and I have to decide if I'm going to work those shows into my weekly viewing calendar.

To start things off this week, I caught an episode of The Ready Room with a recap of season two, episode nine. This was such a great one. I always love when the interviewee is a huge fan of the franchise.

Watched two episodes of Chicago Med. I'm a little disgusted by Nat's storyline even if I'm thrilled to bits that she kicked Philip to the curb. I'm so glad Maggie finally told the others what's going on with her. Nice to see Noah kind of stepping up and growing in his role as a resident. I love this show.

Enjoyed an episode of The Snoopy Show. I kind of like it when they let Snoopy act like a dog and enjoy things like head scratches. So much fun.

Caught the bonus episode of Signora Volpe with behind the scenes cast interviews. I'm hoping there will be another season of this show because I really love the characters.

Watched a well-done first-parter of Silent Witness. This arc is very twisty and turny. I have a solid idea of who the killer is and why they're trying to set up Nicki. Can't wait to find out if I'm right.

Enjoyed an episode of Classic Who. Ace is rather fun and I like how she handled the betrayal. This is another episode kind of set in the fifties and that always interests me because it was such a thing in the late seventies and early eighties.

Started season three (because there is no season two) of Most Terrifying Places in America. This one focused on haunted road trips and I liked the change in the format. I'll finish the series out before starting something new.

Finished the first season of The Mandalorian. I truly loved it! Now I have to decide if I'm going to dive right into the next season or start a new show and wait until it's closer to season three. Stay tuned.

Caught an episode of Harrow and, whoo boy, the walls are closing in. James is a big, fat liar—about everything. Nichols is completely in the know and it kind of breaks my heart because Harrow needs friends and he might have burned a bridge here. I still completely dislike the boss person even though they tried to soften her up by giving her a kid. Sorry, not buying it.

Watched an episode of Blue Heelers and loved it. A very young Sullivan Stapleton guest starred and the storyline rocked. Good stuff.

Enjoyed another MasterClass with Roxane Gay. She discussed the writing process in this lesson and I took away some good information.

Also caught two more episodes of Classic Rugrats and took another trip down memory lane. This show played such a huge role in my kids' childhoods. Makes me happy to reminisce.

That's pretty much it for this week's life update. Tonight's post is from Price Paid, a novella that explores the cost of a perceived betrayal and the weight of guilt between a couple who isn't supposed to be together.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Reva Bane's actions lead Mitch Vanderman to a lot of harm, but seeking atonement shouldn't cause so much pain. Then again, betrayal sometimes demands a price paid in blood, and Reva is willing to shed some if he'll finally forgive her.

And a preview snippet…

Reva ran to the bathroom and heaved, barely making it to the toilet. Alonzo followed along behind her, handing over a cold washcloth when she finished.

Reva wiped her mouth then turned and punched Alonzo in the face. "Get out. Right now." She pointed to the door. "And don't come back for at least a week."

Alonzo rubbed his jaw. "Barax isn't gonna like you going ghost."

Reva snarled an obscenity. "Barax can haul his ass here if he's got a problem with me." She pinned Alonzo with her gaze. "But be forewarned. He won't leave here alive if he decides to drop by. I'd be doing us all a favor and you know it."

Alonzo shrugged. "Not gonna argue. And he's not stupid enough to test your resolve. But … he can and will make everything in your life shit until one of you either dies or gives in."

Reva lifted her chin. "He already shit on the one good thing in my life." Her voice dropped to a whisper. "And there's no coming back from it." The utter hatred on Mitch's face would haunt her.

Probably forever.

Alonzo blinked, the truth finally hitting him. "Vanderman meant that much to you." His jaw flexed, but not from pain this time. "Shit, Reva. I didn't know. I really didn't."

Reva didn't want to talk about Mitch. "No, you didn't. And you still don't." She nodded toward the door again. "I won't ask a second time. Five second rule before I kick your ass out of my sanctuary. I don't give a flying fuck what you tell Barax or if you tell him anything at all." She exited the bathroom and went back to the window. "But if anyone shows up in the next seven days, no one will ever find their bodies." She shot him a sideways glance. "That includes you." As much as she counted on Alonzo, he'd let her down with this situation.

Alonzo held up his hands. "I got the message. Loud and clear." He paused at the door. "But if you need anything, reach out. You don't think so right now, but I do have your back." He moved forward again, his booted feet clomping down the steps.

Reva pressed her face against the cool glass. "Too little, too late." Tears spilled over her lashes and she dashed them away.

Crying wouldn't absolve her sin.

Only Mitch could do that.

And her gut said they weren't finished yet.

Reva has a hard road ahead and she'll be very careful with giving her trust to anyone—even after Alonzo vows to have her back.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Not Again

My youngest kiddo is twenty today. I'm officially no longer a parent of a teenager. Wow. Feels like a milestone.

Had a long week of work projects but got a decent amount of television viewing done also. Sometimes running in the background and other times when I needed to shut my brain off for a while.

I caught two more episodes of The Alaska Triangle. Skagway featured as a gold-rush ghost town and an island with a possible colony of bigfoot ended up being really interesting.

Watched two episodes of The Muppets. The show is growing on me, which is kind of moot since it's only a single season, I believe.

Enjoyed two episodes of Harrow. I'm very intrigued by the backstory mystery. I want to know who Harrow is protecting because I don't buy into the idea he's the culprit. I'm leaning toward Fern at the moment.

Caught two episodes of Peak Practice. I'm liking season seven even if it's kind of messy at the moment. I also rather love the new doctor.

Dove into two more MasterClass lessons with Es Devlin. I love the way she describes her process and how she encourages collaboration. I think I'm going to love this class.

Started The Witcher: Nightmares of the Wolf and didn't finish it. I'm not in the right head space for the animation right now. I'll pick it back up at some point.

Enjoyed two episodes of Classic Rugrats. This is one of my background shows. I can put an episode on and enjoy while I'm digging into something else. I needed that this week.

Watched two episodes of Chicago Med. I'm very interested in the episode titles and like how they're all part of a theme. This show is so good.

I'm almost finished with the first season of Snoopy in Space. This is another background show that I can put on and enjoy when I need a break. The episodes are a quick ten minutes and very fun to watch.

Caught another episode of The Brokenwood Mysteries. I'll probably finish this show up and then have to wait impatiently for a new season. My one singular critique of this show is having Gina be so clueless about Mike's disinterest. It's been seven seasons and I kind of wish they'd address that dynamic at some point.

Started a new season of Silent Witness and while there's no Harry anymore, I like the changes. Should be fun to follow along now.

Finished up an arc of Classic Who and will usher in a new season this week. I'll be interested to see where the show goes from here.

Started a new mystery show with Paranoid and thoroughly enjoyed the first episode. I'll enjoy diving into this one.

That's pretty much it for the weekly update. Tonight's post is from Not Again, a novella where my main characters are reunited and have some issues to work through.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Drue Braddock and Xeno Howlett have a rocky relationship, but when Drue goes off on one of her many soul-searching quests, Xeno decides he's had enough. When Drue returns, she finally knows what she wants—Xeno—but she may not get her chance because he's got someone new in his life.

And a preview snippet…

Xeno put a lid on the to-go cup. "Coffee's ready." He poured a regular mug for himself.

Lydia strolled into the kitchen, her gossamer dress clinging to her curves. "What do you have planned to do all day?" She took a bagel from the toaster and spread almond butter over the surface.

He frowned. In the two months she'd been living in the apartment, they'd never made small talk before she headed out for the studio. She liked to focus and prepare for her day's work and he didn't mind the quiet beginning to his morning—he'd had those with Drue also. Lydia making conversation raised a flag.

He blew across the top of his mug. "I've never had to give you a rundown before." His eyebrow arched asking why now.

Lydia slid him a sideways glance. "Your ex just blew back into town. Forgive my curiosity about whether you plan to be seeing her or not." She nibbled on the bagel then set it aside, wrinkling her nose.

The gesture annoyed him … for no reason. Lydia often took two bites of something then decided not to finish. Something about wasting the food never set well with him. But he'd address that issue later…

Xeno placed his mug on the counter. "Let's get something straight, Lydia. I'm not down with giving you a line-by-line look at my schedule. At some point, it's inevitable I'll run into Drue. When that happens, I'll let you know." He'd never held anything back … why start now?

Lydia crossed into the living room. "I don't see a reason you need to interact with her." She grabbed her keys, a filmy cape, and her bag. "But, you're right, you'll eventually cross paths—she'll no doubt make certain you do." Her voice all but did an eye roll.

He didn't care for the snide tone. "Even if that's the case, it doesn't affect us." He entered the room and stood by the door. "I have a history with her. Hell, we both do. There's no avoiding that." He wouldn't try, except to make it clear he'd moved on.

She shrugged. "Maybe not. But we don't have to play the same song on repeat, do we?" She flung her cloak over her shoulder and sailed out the door.

Xeno narrowed his gaze. "I don't think I'm the one stuck in a groove here." Shutting the solid oak panel, he stopped by the kitchen for his coffee then headed for the office he used to share with Drue.

Sitting behind the desk, he heaved a sigh. "I've removed all trace of her, yet her presence looms large." Which made the dig about playing the same tune sting a little more.

He'd already cut Drue physically out of his life—if only to shake things up and help him not repeat past mistakes. He'd kept their interaction to a minimum, all but throwing her out of the place she'd called home for over three years. Eventually, the images of their life together would fade and be replaced with new memories … right?

His head dropped into his hands. "If not … there's gonna be hell to pay."

And he wanted to avoid that scenario at all costs.

Xeno is pretty much in denial at the moment but Drue won't let him stay there. I'm having a great time with this story.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Hot as Hades

Had a slower work week and got a good bit of cleaning and clearing done. I also got some solid viewing time in. I'm also somewhat stunned that August is just around the corner. This year is flying by.

I started my watch week with Ms. Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries and got two episodes finished. The first one did indeed have Percy the Putz involved in his usual shenanigans. The second one made my heart ache but I thoroughly enjoyed getting some background on Birdie. I'm loving the episode titles for the second season as much as I loved the first season's. Can't wait to finish season two up this week, which I think is probably doable.

Caught two episodes of Silent Witness. These finished out the eleventh season and I'm getting into the seasons I've definitely watched before. I'll be starting season twelve this week.

Enjoyed two arcs of Classic Who and I'm getting close to the end of the seventeenth season. Not sure how many more Four has but I'm excited to start Five's tenure soon.

Finished up UFOs: The Lost Evidence. I thoroughly enjoyed both seasons and got a few neat little plot bunnies from what I viewed.

Caught four episodes of The Muppet Show and finished out the second season. The guest stars were Bob Hope, Teresa Brewer, John Cleese, and Cloris Leachman. Looking forward to starting season three.

This was my week for finishing up seasons. I watched the last two episodes of The Hardy Boys and I'm so excited there's going to be a second season. I really enjoyed how everything played out and I'm so happy everyone got the ending they deserved. Also kind of thrilled there's a seed planted for more possibilities for the eye.

Watched two episodes of Peak Practice. The first one finished out the third season where everyone said good-bye to Beth and Jack. The second started season four with Will on the hot seat trying to save the practice. Glad to see Andrew sticking around for a bit and I kind of liked the new doctor.

I finished up the Master Class with David Carson. I enjoyed getting his insight to graphic design and learned some new things. I also started a new class with LeVar Burton on storytelling. I'm very excited to work through this series of classes.

Caught two episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I'm loving how accepting the group is being about Theo and I'm kind of interested in how the academy stuff is playing out. I like Nick okay but I'm a little twitchy about his motives. Can't wait to find out if there's more going on there.

Enjoyed two more episodes of the Brokenwood Mysteries. I loved this show. The wine episode ended up being a great little mystery and the golf course episode was thoroughly enjoyable. I loved seeing the story play out on that one.

Started Star Trek: Discovery and have to admit I'm cautiously optimistic. I quite enjoyed the first episode. I'm looking forward to more.

Watched two episodes of Chicago Med and have to say again I'm so glad I'm finally getting to watch this series from the beginning. I'm getting close to the end of the first season and I'm looking forward to season two.

Passionflix premiered season two of Driven and the first episode rocked. I loved the first actor that played Colton but the recast works very well. Looking forward to the next three episodes!

Started UFO Witness and liked the first episode. It's only a single season so I'll see where things go.

For nostalgia's sake, I started the new version of the Rugrats (heretofore referred to as New Rugrats). The original will always have a special place in my heart since all three of my kiddos loved the show. It had the rare ability to appeal to little ones and grown-ups with so many inside jokes. The new version is quite charming and I'm happy to say I think I'll enjoy it.

Last but not least, I started a new episode of Blue Heelers. It's a two-parter and looks to be kind of interesting with lots of bridges being burned and internal affairs out for blood.

Whew. That's if for television this week. Tonight's post is from Hot as Hades, a novella featuring the god of the underworld coming to the assist of an artist that needs a little help with a couple of nefarious guys.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Roxie St. Clair, an up and coming artist, wants to live and work on her own terms. But when the god of the underworld informs her of the underhanded tactics of her former employer, she decides to turn the tables and fight back.

And a preview snippet…

Roxie St. Clair burned hot.

Baking, boiling, dripping in sweat, hot.

She'd known using all four kilns at once would make her studio unbearable. She also figured it would make her attached loft warmer than usual.

But not sweltering.

She couldn't shut any of them down either. Too much rode on getting as many pieces completed as possible. She could kick herself for that last creative spurt she'd had.

But it would turn out as some of her best work.

Her very best ever.

The notion brought a smile to her face. She'd never lacked pride in her work—hand thrown pots and clay sculptures—but she did doubt ever making it a success.

Now, she had her chance and couldn't afford to blow it.

The lease on her lovely space would be up in six months and her upcoming show next week would make or break her. If she didn't score enough interest from distributors, she'd be out on the street.

With no choice but to go back to work for evil Edsel Montague.

Oh, how she hated that man. And his creepy, twisted, little day dreams involving the two of them in the throes of passion.

As if. Maybe at half past never she'd consider hooking up with her former employer.

Possibly her soon to be again employer.

Stop it, Rox.

She'd escaped his groping hands and graphic descriptions. Had been free for almost a year.

Best year of her life so far.

Blowing a wisp of hair out of her face, Roxie lifted the heavy length off her shoulder and twisted it up on top of her head. Using one of her carving tools to keep it in place, she instantly felt cooler.

And that, in turn, made her less anxious. She still had the six months to get everything in place to take over the lease from her anonymous benefactor.

Flopping down on the sofa, she kicked her feet up and said yet another silent thank you to the person who'd made it possible for her to pursue her dream.

She still had no idea who her savior might be, or how they'd known her deepest desire. Maybe they'd witnessed the constant harassment from evil Edsel and decided to grant her fondest wish—aside from murdering the pawing pervert—of living and working on her own terms.

Whatever the case, Roxie would be forever grateful. She enjoyed the freedom to create whatever came to mind and prayed she'd be able to continue.

Checking the time, she realized the first kiln would be shutting down in a few minutes. Time to brave the heat and go take a look. She couldn't wait to see how the latest batch turned out.

Roxie is so much fun to write. She doesn't know she's between a rock and a hard place, but she'll soon learn.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Believe

Happy holiday season to everyone! I'm ready for a busy week and a quiet Christmas. We're always pretty low-key and this year my oldest is in the middle of moving out for the first time. I'm thrilled for him but don't envy the chaos. Moving is challenging when it isn't the holiday. LOL

Didn't get much television watched this week. Have an ongoing project that's due by the beginning of January and I'm focused on getting it finished up.

I did listen to a lot of holiday tunes while working and I got sucked into a Scorpion binge marathon. Other than that, I watched the usual classic Perry Mason and The Saint.

Looking forward possibly getting to the movies I'd like to watch this week.

Tonight's post is from Believe, a novella that features a journey to trust the inner self and the one person that knows the most about that self.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Shaelyn Hardwick is a talented mage, but lacks control. When she inadvertently causes another's death, she flees under the cover of darkness. Innis Talmadge goes to the mat for Shaelyn and gets dismissed for his efforts. He tracks her down and a battle ensues. Shaelyn doesn't trust her ability, but she trusts Innis and he has to show her how to believe in herself again.

And a preview snippet…

I killed someone.

Shae got up and paced her floor. "I can't stay here." She couldn't face the mage council.

Even if they let her stay, she didn't trust herself anymore. She didn't believe she wouldn't hurt anyone else.

She gathered up one single suitcase and exited her room. "Innis is gonna be pissed when I don't show at eight." Her steps didn't slow.

She couldn't worry about him. Not right now. But her heart twisted a little.

He drove her mad most of the time but he also taught her so much. "And gives me advice I usually don't heed." She didn't want to tarnish him with her fuck-up.

Innis gave a damn about her and it would lead to his downfall. Or, hell, maybe his death. She didn't have the gift of prophecy, but her dream held vivid clarity. She had the power to end Innis and she couldn't deal with the idea at all.

Strolling out of the manor, she made her way to the grotto to teleport in relative obscurity. She didn't want anyone to know she'd left until she had a good bit of distance between her and the mage campus.

"I have to go somewhere…" Her main thought of escape didn't include a destination. "The fringe. I'll head there."

Dammit. But not right away. She needed to be smart about this. The fringe would be perfect to get lost for a while. The wild-wild-west vibe of the desert mining area would perfectly suit her mood and the need to lay low.

She stepped into the center of the grotto and focused her mind. "A place where no one knows or cares about me." But first, she'd hit the biggest city in the next state.

A zigzag approach. Take some time to earn funds to set up a buffer. She'd hop around instead of taking a direct route. A few paychecks would come in handy in case she didn't find work right away in the fringe.

And the roundabout travel would throw anyone off her trail … because her gut said Innis would try to follow her. And the more distance she kept between them the better.

I like how this story is coming together. Innis has Shae's number but he'll have to get past her call-forwarding. LOL

That's it for this week.

Sunday Snippet: Your Call

Yikes. What a week. We have a new president, which I'm rather thankful for. I hope things slowly get back to at least an even keel. I spent two evenings in two different emergency departments and got to play Dr. Mom with my daughter after she took a spill while riding her rip-stick. Also got some health screening done. It's been a little crazy for the first week of a month.

Didn't get much television watched. I viewed my usual fare on Ovation and caught a few more episodes of Silent Witness. Also ended up catching a few episodes of Death in Paradise, which I enjoyed.

Had a great conversation with my brother about shows we've both watched. We're fans of Australian dramas and recommend anything new we've come across to each other.

That's pretty much it for television this week. I might be back on a semi-regular schedule soon.

Tonight's post is from Your Call, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the mini-blurb:

After an epic battle with a spell weaver, Norje Blayheart and Barrick Nembly—adept mages—aren't sure they can stay together as a couple. Their love can be used against them and neither can risk being pawns in the looming war between the weavers and the mages.

And a preview snippet…

Barrick jerked awake. An obnoxious sound came from the phone on the nightstand.

He nudged Norje and handed her the device. "It's yours." No one else used thrash metal for a ringtone.

She groaned but answered. "Hello." Pushing up to her elbow, she listened intently. "Yeah, fine. I'll head out as soon as I can. Yes, it'll be within the hour." She cut the call. "Geez, what crawled up Hoyt's ass?" Moving to sit upright, she swung her legs over the mattress.

Barrick rolled to his side. "What's  up?" Hoyt liked to push buttons but he'd been on a tear lately.

She shrugged. "Apparently, the world is going to end if I don't get out and patrol right away. Well, more like gather intelligence. Hoyt wants me to skulk around down at the riverfront and see if I pick up anything." She stretched her arms over her head and tilted her head from side to side.

Barrick sat up and propped his shoulders against the pillows. "Damn. If I'd known you were gonna get a call out, we could've gone straight to bed." Right, maybe not.

Norje angled around. "And miss out on that incredible experience?" She snorted. "Bite your tongue, Barrick. Never." Getting up, she crossed to the dresser and dragged out one of Barrick's T-shirts.

He grinned. "Help yourself." He got a kick when she wore his clothes.

She chuckled. "I gotta bring more of my stuff over. Didn't think I'd need work clothes tonight." Dragging the shirt over her head, she glanced over her shoulder. "Please tell me at least one pair of my leggings is here."

He nodded toward the wardrobe. "Second shelf." She could conjure whatever she needed but if she met any trouble, she wouldn't be at full power.

Grabbing the garment, she stuffed her legs inside. "I'll keep you posted." Winding her hair up, she tucked it under a clip. "Better get some rest. I'll lay odds Hoyt'll call you out tomorrow." Snagging his canvas duster, she crossed back to the bed.

Barrick leaned over and caught her face with one hand. "Wake me up when you get back." His lips met hers for a lingering kiss.

She inclined her chin and gave him a wave then exited the bedroom. A few seconds later, the door opened and closed. Barrick settled back, closing his eyes. She really did need to get her stuff moved over. Unless she wanted to wait until after their handfasting.

He shook his head. "Won't be a bit surprised if Hoyt finds a way to conveniently forget we've got downtime scheduled."

This story is coming together nicely. I like where Norje and Barrick are headed … straight into danger.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: Various Reasons

Hello, September. The great office reorganization is coming along. If all goes well, I might have the bulk of the work complete by the end of the year. I'm very happy with how everything is going so far.

Not a bad week for television. I finished up the Danger Man episodes that were available. Not sure what I'll start on to replace this one yet.

Caught an episode of Picard and enjoyed it. I'm not quite sure what to make of the guy who's captaining the ship yet. I rather liked getting a little more Ravi backstory.

Watched two more episodes of Peak Practice. I'm getting to the end of the second season and, so far, still enjoying the episodes.

Finished Ms. Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries. I'd really love to have another season of this show. I feel like the final episode had everyone coming into their own as characters. Maybe we'll get lucky.

Caught another arc of Classic Who. I think I might be ready to start the next season or I'm getting close.

That's it for this week. Tonight's post is from Various Reasons, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Paloma and Cedric keep putting off thinking or talking about the future—they've got a fae war on their hands, but after a particularly ugly skirmish, Paloma decides it's time to open the topic for discussion. Cedric is so shocked, he's not quite sure he believes her, but once Paloma gets through the list of various reasons, he's close to getting on board.

And a preview snippet…

What the hell is going on with Paloma?
Keeping a watchful eye on the next advancing hound, he flicked a quick look over his shoulder. Her stun batons at the ready, she moved warily and less fluidly than normal. The blades at the end of her stunners gleamed in the filtered light from the moon and street lamps.
He focused back on the riled dogs. "Sure you're good?" Did he miss something?
She'd tell him if she got injured. Wouldn't she? Yeah, they were a team. Injuries caused a disadvantage and they needed a razor-sharp edge to fell the final five.
She huffed out a response. "I'm good, yeah. Incoming, right and high." She jabbed the underbelly of a mottled white and black hound.
Cedric slashed with his blade and the beast dropped. In a frenzy now, two more came with snapping teeth and menacing growls. Saliva flew and a line of droplets landed on Cedric's glove, sizzling through the heavy material and opening up a pattern of holes. The protective layer did its job, keeping his skin from being burned.
Cedric flung the whip, snaking the end around the neck of the attacking fawn-colored animal then made a wide arc before releasing it against the building behind them. The second mutt darted around and faced Paloma. Her stun wand jabbed into its snout and the second baton, blade-end forward, finished the job.
A single duo remained and both snarled and frothed at the mouth and each crouched low to the ground. Paloma angled around, facing the beasts at his side. Her weapons charged and waiting, she gave a nod.
Cedric readied his whip. "I'll bring them forward. Let's finish this." He cracked the flayed tail above the heads of the dogs.
They leapt forward, teeth bared. Paloma jabbed her batons into the flanks of the shaggy, red animal a moment before it reached her. The dog got its paws on her shoulders and dug its nails into her vest, all feeling lost in its legs from the jolt of electricity. The weight of the hound dragged her to her knees. Cedric slashed out with his knife and caught his opponent on the underbelly, but only with a glancing slice. The dog spun in the air and countered, landing behind Cedric. He snapped out with his whip, coiling it around the beast's neck and jerked hard, twisting his wrist to end the threat. Paloma struggled with the red mutt, its dead weight keeping her down and its snarling snout in her face. She finally managed to get a hand free and spun her wand around to jab the demon dog in the throat.
Shoving the animal away from her, she rocked back on her haunches. "Geez, tell me the civilians got clear. I'm gagging from the stench here." Slowing getting to her feet, she heaved a sigh and grimaced.
Cedric shot a look toward the now-vacant bar the dogs had attacked. "We're clear." Threat averted, the adrenaline rush dissipated quickly leaving him drained and spent.
Paloma huffed out a laugh. "Thank whatever rules the universe." Her eyes closed and she staggered backward, her shoulders slumping forward.
Cedric swayed where he stood, ready to drop. The wind changed direction and he caught a whiff of something foul. His eyes watered and he broke out in a choking cough. Man … what a rank smell.

I like this couple. They're very casual until bam! One of them gets smacked with something other than the smelly creatures they're dealing with.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!

Sunday Snippet: A Tantalizing Yule

April is almost over and it doesn't feel like we should be moving into the summer months. Seriously, the weather is still chilly, there's a pandemic making everything seem more lopsided and crazy, and it really just feels like we're still stuck in 2019, right?

Anyway, slower than usual week in television, but I did get several things watched. I started out with finishing up the Roswell, New Mexico episode and it ended up being pretty solid. I really want Maria to know what's going on with everyone. Make that happen soon, dammit.

Caught another episode of The Heart Guy and, seriously, this show is growing on me. I'll have to recommend this one to my brother, another fan of Aussie dramas.

The main reason I didn't get a lot of my regular shows watched is because I got completely sucked into the Battlestar Galactica marathon on Syfy. It was so much fun catching up with cast members and seeing them reminisce about the show. The marathon also made me long for the old days when Syfy used to marathon shows on a daily basis. I miss those days so much. I literally loathe the crap they show during the day now. Ugh.

Caught another episode of Peak Practice, the final one for the first season. A familiar face popped up, the man who plays Brackenried on Murdoch Mysteries. That was fun.

Watched two episodes of Danger Man for some background noise. Both were episodes I didn't remember seeing in my initial viewing of the series.

Also caught another arc of Classic Who. I have one more arc left with Three then will be moving on to the fourth doctor.

Watched another series of Cirque de Soleil shows. The talent the performers have amazes me. And the theatrical costumes and plot also blow me away.

Started the second episode of Picard, but the streamer kept crapping out with error messages. Frustrating as that seems to be happening a lot lately with various platforms. With so many people trying to stream shows, I guess that's to be expected.

Same thing keeps happening with Strike Back. I'm almost finished with the fifth episode, but it's taken my three days to get that far. Very annoying. But patience is a good thing.

That's it for television this week. Tonight's post is from A Tantalizing Yule, a holiday spirit sexy short.

Here's the mini-blurb:

During the Yule season, Ginger Radiance, a holiday spirit, has to get Regina Royal, a sexy sprite, under the same roof with Fakhir Frenum, a studly spawn. The two have a clash of wills, creating a massive snowstorm that leaves them stranded … plenty of time to let the holiday work its magick on the wary enemies.

And a preview snippet…

Ginger Radiance burst through her front door and dropped her bag on the floor. "Whew! If I'm lucky, I'll have just enough time to grab a shower before I have to start cooking all the things for my dinner party." Shrugging out of her coat, she hung it in the closet.
She had four other spirits coming for an elegant meal to kick off the Yule season. So far, she had most of the dishes prepped; she only needed to put the finishing touches on them before getting them into the oven. But … she'd run out of wine—an oversight to be sure. One couldn't have a full celebratory feast without a little holiday cheer.
She had the water turned on and warming when the atmosphere shifted and a buzz of awareness zinged her.
Ginger's shoulders slumped. "Oh, no. Not now." Turning the water off, she snagged her robe and sat down at her vanity.
The air shimmered and a message appeared in front of the mirror, floating until Ginger clasped it between her fingers and set it on the smooth surface of the dresser's top. Her gaze scanned the missive and she shook her head.
With a sigh, she sent a quick message to her four guests, postponing the gathering for a day. "I should have known. How many times have I been warned about planning any festivities this close to the solstice?" More than she cared to count.
The powers that be liked to put lonely people together over the holiday—and, dammit, they tended to get it right each time—and Ginger had the unenviable task of getting a sprite and a spook together.
She snorted. "Nothing like a challenging pairing." Sprites and spooks usually didn't hit it off.
And, hoo boy, the couple she had to help had polar opposite personalities.
Getting into her task, Ginger reviewed her first charge's information. "Regina Royal, party girl extraordinaire." But not quite what she seemed.
As an earth sprite, she had a gift with manipulating air and atmosphere surrounding her.
Regina had experienced some recent growing pains and wondered if she'd ever get off the constant party train.
Ginger tsked. "Oh, dearie, the cost of being the life of the party has a high price tag sometimes." And Regina's antics kept her in solid demand.
But, she didn't get to use her ability because most of the gatherings were indoors. And while the female sprite enjoyed the lavish attention and being surrounded by a crowd, she often went home alone. Being at the top of everyone's guest list didn't give her a lot of opportunity to make lasting connections. Regina longed for something different—a reason, an excuse to pull the brake and get off the tilt-a-whirl party train.
Ginger pursed her lips. "She wants somebody to see the lonely woman who craves to be more than a hat-trick, good-time gal."
Even if Regina hadn't quite figured out how to make that happen.
Now, Ginger's second charge could prove to be a complete killjoy. Spooks, often by nature, conjured the whole dark-and-stormy-night vibe. Fakhir Frenum fit the mold and had a tendency to be abrasive and irascible.
Ginger tilted her head to one side. "Maybe because no one can get past the smoldering looks and hard body." Fakhir had more going on with his keen intelligence and elemental ability.
Spooks descended from pantheon DNA and almost always had incredible physiques. The diluted bloodline limited their power but gave them fae magick. Fakhir wanted to do more than get hit on by preternatural creatures or be a magnet for physical altercations.
Ginger drummed her fingers on the vanity. "But it's been so long since anyone tried to dig deeper with him, he does nothing but snap, snarl, and snipe at everyone."
Which could prove interesting when he met Regina.
Rubbing her hands together, Ginger got up and headed for her wardrobe. "And I know just the place to make that happen." The Goodacre Bed and Breakfast.
Dragging some clothes out, she made a mental checklist of what she'd need to outfit the charming inn and what type of invitation she wanted to send. Satisfied with her plans, she dashed off the magickal parchments then sifted through the veil into the nether realm.

I have so much fun brainstorming ideas for the holiday spirit shorts. I love coming up with creative names for the spirits.

That's it for this week.

Cheers!
